How To Propagate Salvia Hot Lips, Taking Cuttings Of Salvia Hot Lips, Plant Propagation
It’s safe to say that in the last 5 years Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ has become one of the most demanded perennials in U.K. garden centres, and it’s for good reason too.
Firstly, Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ is classed as a perennial plant. Salvia used to be classed as tender perennials but actually some of them are pretty tough. They are Sage after all.
Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ can get to about 2.5-3feet in height and spread (75-100cm) although most of the time they don’t make full size due to our shorter growing season.
Plant in a full sun or bright but partially shaded position in free draining soil.
First flush of flowers always come out pure red with subsequent flowers having the white markings.
Generally Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ isn’t available until about April/May in garden centres but that doesn’t mean you can’t get ahead of that and grow more of your own plants from cuttings.
You can start taking cuttings from about March once the plants are putting on decent growth. In some respects, taking some early cuttings can help the main ‘mother’ plant to develop better by encouraging it to bush out.
Tools required:
Clean, sharp secateurs,
Suitably sized pot or tray,
Multi-purpose compost
Fill a pot with the compost and water.
Let the excess water drain from the compost before using.
Ideally you are looking to cut off sections that are about 2-3" in length.
Make a fresh cut below the lower set of leaves or leaf joint/buds.
Remove the lower few sets of leaves, only leaving the top set and growing bud.
Make small holes in the compost and insert the Salvia cuttings, gently firming around the cuttings as you go.
Place the finished pot of cuttings into a propagator or in a warm, bright, position. Do not place in full sun where the cuttings will rapidly dry out.
Leave until the stems of the cuttings start to produce fresh growth or until you can see root formation to the base of the pot. At this stage you can pot up the cuttings using a normal compost.

Thank you so much for the nice comments, glad you like the videos and that they are giving you a bit of help. We were all newbies at some point so don’t get put off and just keep trying. Also worth remembering that works for one person, and in one country, may not work for others. It’s taken me 2 years to work out how to grow Ginger in the U.K. and I’m still struggling compared to those growers in hotter climates.

Hi Rachel. Thanks for watching and the question. Give the compost a good water before placing the cuttings into it. The compost will then only need the occasional water to keep the cuttings on the moist side. I place the cuttings into a more shaded area to stop them getting scorched by the sun, and losing too much moisture through evaporation. No need to mist. I so glad that I found this channel You have explained everything very clear, thank you very much! I had a Hot lips two years ago in container then transferred to a big one in my son's house, it's went well until summer time, he didn't water it in a very hot week, it killed (we are in Sydney) I was quite upset. Now I've got a new one, just two weeks ago, but not many flowers now and leggy, should I give it a light trimming? We are in middle of summer. Please give some advice. Thanks.

Many thanks for watching and your message although I’m a little jealous of you being in summer mode whilst we are in winter ❄️ Salvia Hot Lips is such a great plant but can quickly get stretched, particularly if it’s not in full sun all the time. It is fine to cut it back, prune to just above a set of leaves, and that will also encourage the plant to bush out and develop more core strength. By cutting the plant back you will sacrifice flowers but only for about a fortnight or so. Happy gardening and thanks for finding me 🌸🌼

Thanks very much for your helpful advice. This summer we had lots of rain 🌧️ very high humidity here in Sydney, I not complaining at least we don't have bad bush fire this year. Hope you keep well and so your garden in the cold ❄️ My balcony face west, very hot in the afternoon, I moved the container to the shade area, now should I move it back in the sun and keep up with water and cut back....see what happens.

Hi Katie. Thanks for the question. Salvia are pretty tough, particularly Hot Lips and the Caradonna types, so the cuttings will over winter quite easily. I’m the south and south east of the U.K. the cuttings are fine to be left outside although I would probably put them in a cold frame if you have one. Hi Celina. Thanks for watching and the message. Once the cuttings have got decent root formation to them then you can use your fingers to roughly divide up the pot worth of cuttings. To make it easier I generally just take 4 or 5 cuttings so then it’s just a case of splitting the pot worth into 4 pieces. Don’t worry if some of the compost falls away as you can re pot each plant separately, allowing them to keep growing. Hope this helps 🌸

Nothing to worry about you just dip the base of cutting into the hormone rooting powder and that is it.

Hi Tina. Thanks for watching and your question. Don’t try to divide up this type of salvia as the won’t survive. As this type doesn’t spread through basel roots or shoots it can’t be divided. To propagate the plant you have to take cuttings. Last year I managed to take a few lots of cuttings in spring and summer, and I have already taken a few this year. We are spring here too. Hope that helps you. It’s an amazing plant so definitely worth having it growing in multiple locations. Enjoy your gardening 🌼

Hi Sarah. Thanks for watching and your question. You are probably too late for taking cuttings now we are into October but it’s worth a try anyway. It’s the right time of year to cut back the plants, by half, so why not use some of those pieces for cutting material. I would definitely use hormone rooting compound and try some cuttings indoors and some in a pot in a protected position outside. Good luck with the experimenting and fingers crossed for more plants 🌸🌸

I have never tried to grow this plant from seed and even commercial growers in the U.K. tend to grow this plant from cuttings or from plug plants that are bought in. Salvias are very free flowering but flowering can be greatly reduced if the plants are allowed to go to seed. Additionally, bi colour types of flower like Hot Lips whilst they would grow from seed I’m not sure how similar seedlings would be to the mother plants. Worth a try though so good luck 🌸🌼

Eventual size is about 2 and a half foot and similar size in spread. Plant in a sunny position in a free draining soil, although they will happily grow in a partial shade spot but with fewer flowers. As they are classed as half hardy perennials they tend to have a life span of 3 ish years, so cuttings are useful.

That looks nothing like the two I bought from different places. Mine are white when they open and then the bottom petals stain with bright red after about 3 days. Hence hot lips. I have a purple salvia too. That's easy to get seeds from as the petal case holds them but the hotlips on both are are empty.

Hi Adam. Thanks for watching and taking the time to message. Salvia Hot Lips first flush of flowers comes out as either pure red or red with a slight speckle of white. The second flush, and all subsequent ones then have the familiar bi colour of red upper and red lower petals. If you are looking to increase the number of plants you have, but of the varieties you have, then you can only do that by taking cuttings as growing from seeds will not produce identical plants. Hi Davetta Thanks for watching and the message. Without you saying where you are based the answer is probably more vague. The obvious possible issues are that if the plant has been produced and grown in warm glasshouse like conditions and since you purchased it it has gone outside into cooler conditions then that is one possibility. The plant could be too wet or too dry. The easiest way to tell is to take the pot off and see what the compost looks like. I hope that gives you a few possibilities. Salvia Hot Lips is a tough variety so generally will put up with most situations. How often to water?

Hi and thanks for your question. Salvia don’t like being too wet and especially as a cutting. Better to allow the compost to dry a little between waterings. Look at the leaves to see the changes as the leaves will wilt a little and go more dull in colour as the plant become more dry. When the leaves have changed then it’s time to water again. The irony is that you don't have hummingbirds in your part of the world. Here in the States, Ruby Throated Hummingbirds will tear a hot lips salvia up. They love them. It's one of those perennial plants that the little hummies just can't resist.

I took some more cuttings this February/March and once rooted potted them into 10.5cm pots, in April. They will be planted in the ground at the end of this month. Hi Zena. Thanks for watching and messaging. Hot lips goes through a few colour variations. First flush of flowers is nearly always plain red. Subsequent flowers are then as the trademark red with white lip. End of season flowers tend to show more as singular colours, plain red and plain white. It doesn’t seem to matter how the plant is grown as even my commercial suppliers have the same colour variation as the season progresses so don’t worry.
