Here we see the 285 ton anode running it's last mile of a trip that started in Salt Lake City, UT. In the first scene we see the Precision Heavy Haul team making the turn from Arizona Highway 188 onto the US 60 in Claypool, AZ. I thought this turn was going to be a troublesome one for them, but you could tell this wasn't their first rodeo! Arizona DPS officers blocked off the intersection and within 5 minutes the anode was through and traffic was flowing again. Scene two shows the load entering the Freeport McMoRan mine complex in Miami, AZ. An interesting thing to note, is as the load is climbing the very steep grade at the mine, the driver of the lead truck lifts the rear most and unpowered axle on his rig for more traction on his drive axles. The entire set up was reported to be 225 feet long, with the anode itself weighing 285 tons. This was shot on 8-16-11. TO SEE A COUPLE OF MUCH SLICKER VIDEOS SHOWING THE ENTIRE MOVE OF THIS ANODE, WATCH---Precision Heavy Haul "Riding With The Giants Parts 1 And 2"

@crapityshaith Thanks for watching. I'm glad you liked it. I was lucky enough to be on vacation when this all happened and I passed the load near Wickenberg on Aug. 11th on my own trip to Salt Lake City. Good thing they took the weekends off, because that gave me enough time to run up to SLC and back home in time to catch it on the 16th.

Just FYI, he's not lifting that axle to improve traction on his drives, he's doing it to improve his turning radius, otherwise when he turns really sharp it will try to drag that last axle sideways some, but since there is weight on it, it has the effect of pushing the front axle straight, forcing a wider turn radius since the bogey (or non driven axle) is not steerable. Yes, lifting the axle does increase the weight on the drives, but that doesn't mean it'll increase his available traction, he's got all the traction he's gonna get already on the drives, irregardless of whether the bogey is down or not. You can see the very same thing happen everyday with cement mixer trucks and tri-axle dump trucks when they make their turns, after they make the turn they put the axle back down to spread the load back out over the all the axles. This is common on 4 (or more) axle trucks with only one steerable axle. Trucks that have multi-steer axles have no need to lift any of their axles to improve the turn radius.

I know your comment was probably more joke than serious, but the Europeans would say yes and throw that thing on a Goldhofer trailer/unit! Those things can have crazy nuts amount of tires. Though they work, and work well, and can carry serious tonnage, I'm glad these guys used this setup instead. To me this was a more interesting unit than a Goldhofer.

My dad worked for an Arizona Copper company, and in high school, we got to tour the plant site. In the old days, copper concentrate would be dumped into a several thousand degree furnace (heated by natural gas), and it would melt. Air would be introduced to help move the sulphur and oxygen out the top, back in the days when they were major polluters. With the invention of the flash furnace, the process was much simpler. Pt. 1

its for something in the smelter section of the mine. now this, ill probably be wrong on, but i wanna say they use it for melting the material and extracting copper out of it. dump material in one side, and it comes out the other side.

The 285 ton figure came from the news story on AZCentral discussing the load and it's route and schedule, but also from the guys that moved the load. Prescion Heavy Haul and Inland Kenworth have videos posted on KZfaq where the guys that actually moved this load are commenting on many different aspects of the move, including the weight. They are nice videos.

The end of a months-long planning process. To move that load, every yard of the route needs to be planned. From road/bridge/overpass weight limits, overhead clearances, location/depth of gas pipelines and even the height of local power lines. Time of day, traffic flows, turn radius', road grades and more. Hats off to PHH company for a successful move.

Yes, the center sections come out, get stacked then the wing dollies are disassembled then stacked also. The push truck can pull half of it back with the counter weight set on the deck of the single section of the trailer.

No, the driver in the push truck is in total control of his own truck. I suspect the load is heavy enough that one truck by itself can't accelerate the whole weight of the trailer and load faster than the other driver can compensate for. Communication, coordination, experience, alertness, and trucks that are matched well and the weight of the load just kind of makes everything work together smoothly.

@theSurvivAllExpert No, they didn't sweep the intersections before it came through. Traffic was flowing normally through the intersection until about 5 minutes before the load came through. The ticket reviewer probably said WTF!? when looking at that one!

The trucks used for these heavy haul applications are speced out different than over the road trucks. The are ordered with larger engines, more gears in the transmission and sometimes in the rear differentials as well, and larger radiators and cooling system components to keep them from overheating. Even with these mods they still sometimes overheat.

I didn't see the return trip of this unit, so I can't say for sure, but it looks like the load deck is expandable for varying loads. As set up for this load it had 3 segments joined by huge pins, which means that the trailer could've been shortened for the return trip. I can't tell by looking at the video, but maybe the deck width is adjustable too. The trailers wheel sets could be narrowed and were constantly adjusted during the trip. If any of this was done to get it home, I don't know.

It is NOT an Anode. It appears to be a heavy wall section of a tower with heavy external stiffening rings, or a horizontal dryer that would roll on bearings on the 2 'Riding Rings"It does not appear to weigh as much as stated. It has openings and is not a 'heavy wall' vessel. Most likely a tower section.

In the Reverb, large amounts of raw natural gas were injected into the matte. This would burn off any remaining sulphur and oxygen. After cooking long enough, the matte is now pure enough to pour into anodes. But first it is transferred via ladel to a holding vessel at the anode wheel. I think what you were watching being moved was a holding vessel. When put in place, it can rotate to the up position to receive the copper... Pt. 3

Back when GM had their metal stamping plant here, some presses they would have brought in, they had a specialized trailer that was so long took 3 drivers to drive it, 1 driver per length of trailer to bring on some of their stamping press'es. Had a pan shot picture of it once, it was 24inch by 6 inch pan shot.

.Very impressive on moving this large load a few question some to mind: 1. When did the driver of the pusher know to apply power? 2. The man on the unit did he steer the front and back of the unit? 3. What was the tonnage per set of tires on the road? 4. What was the total years of driving time between the two drivers?

its not a anode its a anode barrel it is used in the smelting process which turns copper concentrate into copper anodes which weigh about 850 pounds each. i was on the crew tasked with the unload of the barrel we used a 240 ton crane and a 175 ton crane making a tandem lift and set it on a mat of 1-1/2 inch steel plate to keep it from settling into the ground

And then be rolled so that the copper will pour out of the center spout, down a trough to the anode wheel. What you don't see, is the brick lining it will get when in place. The anode mould is made out of pure copper, and sprayed with a material like graphite to keep it from sticking. Since the mould is water cooled, it keeps it from melting when the hot copper goes in. When the mould is shot, it's re-melted in the furnace and a new mould made. The End.

A "Flash" vessel would be preheated (by natural gas) and fed Copper Concentrate and pure oxygen. Oxygen would oxidize the concentrate, giving off Copper (with impurities) and abundant amounts of sulphur dioxide. The copper would fall to the bottom and pool. Slag would be tapped off the top, the copper tapped at the bottom. Huge ladles would transfer the "matte" to a reverb furnace. Pt.2

1. The drivers communicate by radio, but even without that one truck isn't powerful enough to move the load alone on a grade. At least not at any decent speed. So the neither truck can go too fast on its own, even if the driver wanted to. On these 6 and 7% grades it was maybe 2nd or 3rd gear and pedal to the floor and that's all the speed you could muster. 2. The front of the trailer was just towed through the turns like any trailer, but the rear was steered through tight curves only.

a bit of reminiscing on h/s and college chemistry, but I know you need electrolysis to separate copper from its rough form. an anode/cathode setup in the lab resulted in copper, [bluish color] forming on one side. I suppose this is a huge version of what we learned in laboratory to mass produce copper in sufficient quantities. whatever it is, this video is exciting though the trucks are dead slow.
