Great video in detail! I appreciate that! I did a forum on this subject during past Sun n Fun and got a great reception. I still believe there is a lot that is not apparent when video making. Here are my couple of questions: - why not use 24 fps instead of 30? Isn’t 24 the standard for filming? - any tips on better audio? Using just a splitter doesn’t always seem to yield good results. Even worse when recorded to a GoPro. - which editing program do you use? I use Resolve - does the 12 overheat faster when connected to an external power source? Sorry more than a couple. I hope to see you again at OshKosh & ask more questions in person!😊

Great questions, and Ill be doing a presentation on this at Osh (Tue 230pm Forum Stage 4). Here's some answers: - 24 vs 30 really is a personal choice. 24 will have a slightly more cinematic feel. For past couple of years Ive been doing more tv work which is 30. But lately have moved back to 24. WIth everything being progressive and not interlaced, it's not as big a difference today as it once was. - THe quality of the audio will boil down to your avionics. And many of us fly in 40+ year old planes with 40+ year old wiring with wonky alternators etc. Ain't no splitter on earth thats going to filter that. - For editing, I use Adobe products but will probably switch to DaVinci soon. One new thing about Premiere that answers your previous question. They have a magic button for dialogue audio that cleans it up amazingly well. I used it a lot in the Aeroverse show Throttle Jockey Ep 3. - I have not tested the heating of the 12 on a hard wire power source. But power is power. It's the processor that heats it up. Make sure you say hi at Osh!

One addition.. if you are powering your GoPro with ship’s power while recording audio with it, then you need a $10 ground loop audio isolator inline.
@TakingOff

What about using a slap stick to sync the video both front and back end? What about mounting cameras using the back windows? is there a way to mount a camera on the seat? What about mounting a camera up top inside center back passenger area? Is there insurance for the outside cameras in case you lose any of them? What about your editing machines? Do you use a audio mixing board that has either usb 2.0 or 3.0? [I have one that uses firewire].
@TakingOff
@TakingOff 5 күн бұрын
Let's see if I can answer these in order. Slap stick, you mean a slate? a clap does the trick. Suction cup would probably work. I do- I have two mounts on the ceiling and can turn cameras back towards pax. Good luck finding insurance for that. I edit on my computer- that's my machine. I dont use an audio board- I use the audio tools in my editing software.

Awesome video Dan and Bryan. It was great to get an in-depth view of how and what you use. I have that same tie down mount and it really is a great product. The cameras I had have giving me some trouble, and I plan going to the GoPro soon. I really need to get back into making some videos. I have been slacking. Thank you for all you do and share. Keep up the excellent work. Safe skies my friends 🇺🇸🛩️

Does a logbook entry suffice for a modification. To certificated airplane? I thought mounting cameras externally on a certified plane required an STC.
@TakingOff
@TakingOff 5 күн бұрын
Its gray. And different mounting might require different paperwork. If temporary, no tools etc (like that tie down mount) no entry is necessary. For some of the others, it might just be a sign off from you IA. And for more involved stuff, a 337 or a STC.

@2:58 doesn’t this mount need a logbook entry from The A&P as well, Dan?
@TakingOff
@TakingOff 4 күн бұрын
IMO no, based on the FAR's. This would be considered temporary and the FAA does not define temporary but based on precedence, doesn't need a logbook entry.

OK, I gotcha. I am not proficient in the Quik app. I use it for Key framing my 360 videos, but I do all my editing in Premier. Da Vinci has a free version that’s fairly robust, you could probably do it in that.

What about the (FAA) legalities on these? Is the FAA okay with this? They obviously affect aerodynamics, but enough to bother about?
@TakingOff
@TakingOff 4 күн бұрын
The FAA has their rules and as long as you comply, you're good to go. I'll add this to my talk on the cameras on planes I'll be doing at Airventure on Tue July 23.

What technique do you use for syncing video?
@TakingOff
@TakingOff 5 күн бұрын
Usually I just give a clap when I roll cameras and have audio rolling. I've bought the GoPro remote, but it doesn't always "see" all the cameras, so Ive rarely used it. ANother technique I've done is to put a timer on my phone and start each camera and flash the phone in front of the lens to get the time. Then can sync with math. For exterior cameras, I'll sync based on the initial prop movement or when I close the airplane door.

I found filming at 60 fps eliminated the instrument and radio panel flickering. I always find the instrument and radio panel flickering very distracting as a viewer..

Yeah its a shutter speed versus refresh rate on screens. Some cameras have the ability to change the shutter speed to better match the refresh rate.
