Mike Judge Presents: Tales From the Tour Bus
Season 1, Episode 1
Johnny Paycheck, 1 of 6
Aired on Cinemax: 2017.09.22
In addition to selling 40 million records and producing chart-topping hits like “She’s All I Got” and “Take This Job and Shove It,” country music outlaw Johnny Paycheck became notorious for living the part. He was known for his music, grand theft auto, drug binges and stints in jail. At the height of Paycheck’s fame, he shot a man over a turtle soup recipe, which led to a high-profile trial, a prison sentence and one of his greatest hits, “Old Violin.”

Thanks Mike. Johnny paycheck has faded from public memory. He started a brawl at a dive near me when I was a kid.

These country stars were more hardcore in many cases than actual 'ganstas'.

Country music is absolutely nothing compared to 1980 and the years before that. Johnny paycheck was a badass, he has one of the only songs I ever teared up over, old violin.. probably best song in country music history..

The greatest was an obscure artist named Unknown Hinson. He actually shoots at band members or audience members during performances

Saw Unknown Hinson perform in Tucson Arizona -- never forgot him. It's a cliche to call someone a true artist, but I cant think of any other way to say it

The reason why Connie Chung wasn't picking on Johnny paycheck was because teens weren't listening to Johnny paycheck in the 90s.

They might not have been going out and buying his records as much as NWA, but parents who had bought the records were certainly playing his music around their kids, so if you're only worried about exposure of violence in music with teens, and not adults, then the kids were still being exposed. I might not have known much johnny cash in the early 90s, but I certainly knew the line he sang about shooting a man just to watch him die, as it was sampled in a beastie boys song, which meant they, and I imagine, millions of other kids were sure enough familiar with his songs about violence and murder. So, is it only a concern if it's mainly kids buying the music, or if they are being exposed to it? Let's not forget at one time or another most of these old country and rock stars were once mainly being bought by kids as well, and while there might've been some moral outrage over the likes of Elvis shaking his hips, the kids grew up and then started making a fuss over NWA while they were hoping in their car and cranking johnny paycheck, knowing he just shot at someone
