I think most friendships that don't work out it's just because you guys don't align on certain core things like values or character, you can't change that. So leaving IS the best way to end things. And most people don't leave friendships because they suddenly make up their mind when they get up, it's over many months or years of noticing behaviour, thoughts, actions, values etc that don't sit right with them so there's really no need to explain yourself. They just aren't your person.
