Thanks for having me on your channel! I had a blast! I am always happy to talk to someone that loves Stephen King and can relate to my struggles with Malazan haha!

This was just fun to have on in the background; listening to a couple great tubers bouncing across great subjects and questions.

Watching a lot of videos with A Critical Dragon and Philip Chase plus the Malazan chapter read along and commentary on Tor Rereads are mostly what helped me get through Malazan with the parts I didn't understand and characters I didn't remember. I did the audiobooks, which was pretty insane. LOL. I remember crying over the Chain of Dogs while I was building newspaper pages at work. SMH. TBH, there are sooo many characters, I still didn't keep everything straight if they weren't the main groups that I really enjoyed following, but I am so glad I finished Malazan. It's a series that really stays with you. I think Midnight Tides is still my overall favorite. I am definitely a Tehol and Bugg fan. Malazan led me to The Black Company, which I enjoyed so much that I now have all the books and am almost done with the last one. Looking at a lot of my favorites, military fantasy is apparently one of my favorite subgenres. Codex Alera, Stiger's Tigers, Empire of Man, Black Company, Malazan.

Reading sprints are a really helpful method for body doubling. A lot of neurodivergent folk use it for focus and staying productive 😊

When Moid commented during the stream saying "book reviews suck", I just thought of his three body problem series review, and how brilliant it was. It can be worth it!!

Needful Things is in my top 3 Stephen King. Quintessential King. Even if you don't continue with Malazan, your readalong is the only reason I read the series, so I will always owe you that.

I can’t do audio for fantasy books. There’s too many characters. Even a series I’m relatively comfortable with like Game of Thrones… can’t do it on audio. I do like audio for mysteries or celebrity memoirs or even sci fi sometimes. Single POV books are probably the better ones to try on audio. I do mostly read with my eyes, but if I reach for an audiobook it’s usually one of these genres.

Just want to say, the second and last book of three body has much much stronger characters. Just finished the trilogy and it was amazing. The dark forest blew me away

The Black Company starts to make sense in the last third of it. I almost DNF-ed it, but I'm glad I didn't. Mike, would you read Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa?

I am glad you can laugh about your Bitcoin fiasco, Mike. I admit I laughed that first morning when I woke up and saw the Bitcoin live stream, but I knew everything would be ok.

The point about the Discworld reading order, is that it is completely irrelevant. You can read them completely out of order. Books 1-3 and 5 are just significantly worse than the rest of the series, so reading in publication order is just a very detrimental experience 😉

They're definitely worth checking out, they aren't fast paced or action heavy though more character focused if I remember correctly as its been quite a while since reading them.
