The Britten V1000 is arguably Aotearoa New Zealand’s most famous motorbike - an iconic feat of design and engineering hand-built by John Britten and his team.
Here, Bob Brookland and Craig Roberts shared their memories of John and explained what made his world-beating motorbikes so unique.
They removed the bodywork of the Britten V1000 revealing rarely seen working parts. Questions from the audience brought out more stories and details about John, and the 10 Britten Bikes from the people who know it well!

It was great to have the airflow shown, it had always been a mystery to me having the radiator under the seat. Fantastic presentation, it gave a very real sense of the passion that went into that bike from a great team of people, headed by John Britten.

I was at Ruapuna in '85, the day the K100 was circulating and will always remember talking to John and being impressed by his willingness to 'rave' about the projects he was doing - not just the bikes, the apartment buildings, cupboard door handles, teapots - really he was a modern day Da Vinci and his smile and humour were what made him so special - he was just a lovely man and a real Kiwi.

What a fantastic event , thankyou to all involved . A fan of the Britten project since seeing a TV programme in the UK in the early 90s as an apprentice , and shortly after reading an article in MCN , been lucky enough to have seen the bikes in the UK and also in NZ and visit Carlisle Street along time ago ....fantastic and thanks again for this video

I absolutely love the biking heritage from New Zealand, firstly Burt Munro and the John Britten both true visionaries . Burt's desire to make the greatest amount of power out of that indian was insatiable. John had many ideas over many genres .His passion for bikes was undeniable but equally for architecture in the design of his house. John was a true visionary who deserved to see out his dreams .

I started watching this video to understand how the steering worked after seeing post about the bike on facebook. There was about 3 seconds where they moved the handlebars and you could see how that all worked. Very cool stuff. I think I missed the part where the fuel tank was. Guessing it's one of the chambers in the big blue thing where you'd think the tank would be. Was cool to see how it was ducted for the air to get to the radiator and intake. Still going to search for a video or something on how the suspension works. Kind of wish they could have pushed down on the front/rear while the camera was close in on it. Came here for the 3 seconds I saw about the steering, but watched the entire thing because it was such an interesting machine.

Its amazing he can think so much outside the box. Only wish if the Britten family can collect biker interest to produce a limited affordable series.

It's still the most innovative bike ever built and it was built in the 90s.

My question...from the Cardinal bike to #10, the shape and look has changed quite a bit. Notwithstanding the colour scheme, did you have to change the configuration of the actual motor and externals to fit the bodywork or does it still have the same Cardinal engine and chassis up to #10? They really needed to have it on a turntable but all good.

Most enjoyable evening. Seems such a waste that it is capable of being run, but probably never will
