Hi guys, here in England during the 80's I can tell you Talk Talk were not one hit wonders. So I will give you a few of their hits that were in the singles charts and made regular appearances on "Top Of The Pops" Lead singer Mark Hollis sadly is no longer with us. You will be surprised just how many singles they released. So here are a few of the top hits > "Talk Talk" same as the groups name...."Today" ..." Such a Shame" [ one of my favourites ] ... "Life Is What You Make It" [ another brilliant song ] ..." Living In Another World" They should keep you busy with 5 excellent songs....If you had to pick just one ... it's "Such A Shame" and pick two ? ... "Life Is What You Make It" ....Pick 5 and refer to original list. Lol Hope this helps. Byeee Jim X

Simon Reynolds' excellent obit at NPR Radio titled "Mark Hollis and Talk Talk's Brilliant Nuanced, Stubborn Visions" is a great tribute to Mark and Talk Talk. Thanks for the reaction to It's My LIfe. The album after this was „The Colour Of Spring“ and it was the transition to the masterpieces that came after this (like „Spirit Of Eden) - being itself a masterpiece also. Recommendation for next tunes from 1986 would be „Happiness Is Easy“ and „It‘s Getting Late In The Evening“ (which was - for what reason ever - a B-side only; one of my all time favourites). I am old enough to have seen Talk Talk live in 1984 and 1986. Unforgettable. They were not only reproducing their album versions. They created an extra universe. And no one was busy making photos and videos, of course…

Such a good selection! Love it! I would HIGHLY recommend something from their next album, The Colour of Spring like "Life's What You Make It" or "Living in Another World". Its a transition work for Hollis, moving from the kind of synth pop sound on this tune, to the much more experimental stuff from Spirit of Eden or the true "post-rock" album Laughing Stock. Hollis quit the business after their last album did not sell well.

You know what . . . Mr. Mister is a band that I want to purchase their albums because their "Singles" are soo strong. I have mentioned (with Nick too), that the last 2 places I've worked, I have to listen to AWFUL Pop songs over and over and over and over (and OVER), but there are a few I don't mind at all; Sting, The Police, Peter Gabriel, Simple Minds, and a few others that I've forgotten (and surprised of other great New Wave/Alternative songs they DON'T play), but "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" are VERY well written tracks and top-tier musicianship (The Drummer "Pat Mastelotto" has been with King Crimson for many years now and played on 3 studio albums). Forgive me Mr. Greybeard . . . no more Thompson Twins in my life (and I'm being VERY respectful to the band 😝, you have no idea 🙃). But hey, N&L may want to hear it 😉. Btw - Prog Metal band *Anubis Gate* does a great cover of Broken Wings :).

Totally agree with what others have said - Talk Talk are much more than one hit wonders! Each album they made was a stellar progression from the last. They followed their art even when it meant falling out with record companies and dropping sales. Their last 2 albums are subtle masterpieces but are easier to access if you listen to what preceded them. 'The Colour of Spring' is a great intro and worthy of a whole album reaction - probably their most accessible album.

@@HarryFlashmanVC Well the indie alternative scene was more aligned with new wave/punk. R.E.M. and the Replacements and those type of bands were considered new wave bands in the eighties. R.E.M. has said they played mostly new wave clubs back in the early days. The term alternative rock didn't really become wide spread until the nineties. That's when those bands became alternative.

I have all five albums from Talk Talk. They are: The Party's Over (1982) Incidentally on "Avalon" from Roxy Music's 1982 album of the same name, Bryan Ferry starts off with the lyric "Now the party's over, I'm so tired". It's My Life (1984) The title track was my introduction to Talk Talk. Like the first album, very synth pop in style. But you could already hear the early signs of what they became later. "Tomorrow Started" and "Does Caroline know" are a couple of examples. The Colour Of Spring (1986) They moved away from synth pop with this album and it's the last time Talk Talk would ever tour. Spirit Of Eden (1988) Here's where Talk Talk became much more progressive and Mark Hollis told the record executives that the band would no longer be able to tour because the music wasn't going to be commercial enough and the album has too many guest performers to warrant it. Laughing Stock (1991) This was the second album I heard from Talk Talk. Knowing them only for "It's My Life", I was blown away from how different the band had become. It's even more complex than Spirit Of Eden. So I picked this album up immediately. I worked my way backwards until I had all five albums. Most prog bands start prog and go pop later. Talk Talk did the reverse. By the way, information and reviews on them can be found on Prog Archives. I also have Mark Hollis's self-titled solo album from 1998. It's completely acoustic and is otherwise similar to Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock. He retired from music after making that album. I have the DVD of Talk Talk's Live At Montreux from 1986. An excellent concert.

Such a Shame from the same album. Tomorrow Started. Does Carolina Know? The Colour of Spring (their best selling album) has great songs and moves away from Synth Rock. Live's What You Make It. Happiness is Easy. Living in Another World By the team we get to Spirit of Eden it's post rock-jazz, ethereal. I Believe in You is a good first track from Spirit of Eden. Producer and keyboardist Tim Friese-Greene played the synths.

Life's What You Make It would be the next progression for Talk Talk. As Lex somewhat alluded to, Talk Talk actually epitomized progressive rock. From where they started - you can check out the song "Talk Talk" as a starter - to where the ended up is an amazing ride. They moved from being a solid New Wave synth band to the cutting edge of 90's post-rock/prog. Also, one other band that hits that Spirit of Eden vibe would be Tortoise which is almost exclusively instrumental.

*Love this song* . Brings back memories of Africa in 1984. I was a a teenager then (16 years old to be exact). As a bass player, I love the bass line in this song. Probably one of the best from that decade.

Oh my goodness! I recognize that pinkish-faced album in the background! I had that album as a teen! I think it's a King Crimson album. The song I remember most was '21st Century Schizoid Man'. LOL

Great band! No other band underwent so a great an evolution in five albums. Originally a new wave band and ultimately post rock. The third album is my favorite. April 5th is a great song.

You need to react to more 80s New Wave music! Bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, Yazoo, Human League, Tears for Fears, Flock of Seagulls, Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, and tons of others. You'll be surprised of how beautiful that kind of music was!

As many have already commented, you need to listen to complete Spirit of Eden album, may be even on yourself. This is the album that really created the blue print for Post Rock. Bands like Sigur Ros really followed in the path shown in the album. Not many bands can claim to invent a new genre, the album did that. The album was not successful at launch, but over the years deservingly got it's accolades.

I have been following you for quite a while but I watch on my TV and can't comment there. I just saw the Nick Drake video and you really must hear his song "River Man". And I wonder if you are familiar with Terence Boylan? A seriously underrated singer/songwriter. He did an LP when young and later two wonderful albums released by Aylum Records. On the first, self titled album you find the cream of Californian musicians, Donald Fagen being one of them. Listen to the song "Hey Papa" and enjoy.
