Talk Talk with the late great Mark Hollis on vocals. A giant among men in every sense - he took no s**t from the record industry, eventually refusing to bow to their demands - he quit the business entirely in 1998, to spend time with his wife and children. He sadly passed away in 2019 aged 64 after a short illness. A very sad day for me, he was a man who stuck to his principles - a very rare thing in the rock music world. RIP Mark - you are sadly missed by a great many whose path you crossed.

I love to see people reacting to Mark Hollis and Talk Talk. This is music that can change your life. And that Montreaux Jazz Festival performance? Can't even imagine being in that audience. Heaven bless him in his calm.

You have to listen to the whole concert (it's on YT) Talk Talk live at Montreux. A phenomenal performance by one of the best bands not only of the 80s. Mark Hollis had a unique voice. RIP Mark.

It’s not like the studio version at all. There are quite a lot of cuts in it. And many of the animal sounds resemble airplanes more, like HxC says.

I went to see them on this tour with my brother at Manchester Apollo . I think it was 1986. Exact same show, same set list everything. I thought it was an excellent performance, perfectly on point, musically tight…. I loved it ! My brother (who was a fan) walked out half way through and waited for me in the pub next door until the end…. He thought they were boring, no interaction with the audience etc. “I might as well be listening to the cd at home” …. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Mark Hollis was more an artist than a singer. Talk Talk first EP tanked, but their first album went number 1 in Europe and US college radios. This song is based on "Diceman", a novel in which the protagonist lets its life determined to the roll of a die. Afterwards Hollis went the artrock way, blending tape loops, jazz jams and muttered vocals with a pinch of world music and literary references... Such a shame and It's my Life are their most known singles but everything they did afterwards was WAY interesting. Mark Hollis retreated from a successful career to focus as a painter and died too young... Really the best art rock band from the 80's...

I love your reactions. You crack me up every time & you're so dang cute too. (Don't worry, I'm old enough to be your mom). 🙂 This is one of my favorite bands and I really liked the first album. People are so afraid of 80" Pop" which is BS. Check out "Hate" Live, "Talk Talk" (The song) and "Today". The Drummer, Lee Harris, is my fav to watch on all the live shows. He's killin' it back there. That guitar player is playing like a flamenco player. It won't break strings.

Thanks for letting me know about the dice symbolism on the studio version video. Forty years is better than never... yep, I'm an old schmuck! It's funny you're saying you're in another world because they also made a song titled "Living in another world". But the sounds of "Such a shame" aren't so random : in the studio version you can more clearly hear nature sounds like elephants and birds. You can see the sound engineer with his console on stage moving the whole instruments positionning in real time during the performance. There were no pre-programming stage consoles at the time. BTW, if you want to listen to very dynamic acoustic guitar playing, check out Bernhoft SK Session and Bauhaus performances. You'd be mesmerized by this one man band skills.

Hearing the elephant; I am in my nices car, feet out of the window, sigaret in my hands, wind blowing through my hair, on my way to the beach. Ow boy, really good memories 😀👍🏻. But this intro and video / version is not the one that gives me the real goosebumps. Like the original / official better. But anyway thx!

Bruh. That's the 80s for you. Synths were a new thing back then. 70s MIDI sound to actual 80s digital sound was an innovation. So these guys were experimenting in a way. Next react to "it's my life" the video clip version versus the live version of this concert.😁

MIDI wasn't available until 1983. That's why a lot of the early synth music had to be played manually or synced in a very laboriously, Anyways.
