who the fuck puts a nail in the middle of a step with the sharp end sticking up? if you know anything about how these wooden stairs are made, it makes it the biggest plothole in the entire movie. Even if whoever built these stairs re-used the boards from other construction, he'd remove the nails beforehand. Literally unwatchable.

Re: The old man yelling It's been a while since I've seen this in its entirety, but the impression I got was that the old woman (his wife?) died from the creatures... and in his grief, he yelled out. He had just given up, basically, and didn't want to live in this fucked up world anymore. I also think it's a good parallel (and foreshadowing?) to the father yelling out at the end. The old man cried out because a life was lost, while the father cried out in order to save a life.

There's actually some interesting theory on why that is. From a filmmaking perspective, constructing a scare is very similar to constructing a joke. Both have set-ups and payoffs, both often rely on the element of surprise and both are used to break up the tension of a scene. Furthermore, both can exist not only as a funny line or a scary moment, but as an overall mood: A movie can feel funny or "feelgood" even if nothing funny is happening at that exakt moment, and a movie can feel creepy/scary the same way. Other genres like Sci-Fi, Drama, Western or Fantasy don't have something that clear. If executed really well, both can push your body and mind to a temporary loss of control, be it through bend-over belly-laughing or being paralized because you're scared shitless. There are a lot of parallels and a skilled comedian will almost always have a good sense for horror.

Watching this movie in the theaters was hands down one of the most unique experiences of my life - it was during the premiere weekend, and normally for a big movie like this around here you just know there's going to be at least a few people quietly chatting or reacting to movie and certainly a lot of food/drinks noises; however, the room was absolutely crowded during the movie and you wouldn't hear a single thing (besides the occasional sharp breath or the shuffling of someone covering their mouth during the tense moments). Like, people genuinely and without protest were just silent the entire movie. It was almost like there was this mutual agreement or understanding between everyone that this was a special occasion and you should do your best to be silent - to the point that pretty much everyone who bought popcorn or candy finished their food before the trailers ended so as to not disturb the silence. It was definitely a crazy (but good) thing to experience.

@ct_rider134

That's how I always thought of it also. She made a noise in some way or another and was killed and they stumbled upon the scene. Old man either didn't want to live without his wife or intentionally gave his life so that they could escape. Tiny noises may not always draw the monsters but if there's one super close even their footsteps could have drawn it to them, think of how loud it was hearing the ticks from the egg timer

Yup. I get the impression he was living with his wife, both old, who had survived the apocalypse. Then she died, he wasn't sure about going on. Then he encounters a child and thinks "This child now has to live in this world..." and I think that was probably what 'broke' him. The realization that he'd have to live in a world without his true love and that the child would be growing up in such a world, probably never to have what he did. He couldn't live knowing all that. So...f'kit.

Natalie hasn't seen "Train to Busan" yet, but I suspect that she will get a real emotional roller coaster ride out of this modern classic from South Korean. A naive Canadian reactor, "Popcorn in Bed" was tricked by her Patreons who assured her that "Alien" was no scarier than "Ghostbusters." (Sadists!) They repeated the trick with "Aliens," though she'd stopped eating popcorn, or there would have been "a mess in bed.";)

Pt. 2 is absolutely bonkers. In my opinion it's absolutely on par with part 1; my friends actually love part 2 more. What I love about these movies is that they have heart. A lot of the stand out moments are just the quiet moments with the characters (that waterfall scene is one of my favorites). We care about all of the characters, and when they're in danger, we freak out. It's insane how these movies have minimal audible dialogue, yet Krasinkski crafts this super engaging story. He's got a promising future in the directing world.

I was really dissappointed with the second one. It didn't bring anything new, and traded suspense for jump scares which are the lowest form of scary movie tropes. Jump scares are things they use to cover up badly written horror.

one thing i feel this movie captures perfectly is that even when fully prepared...when used to the dangers of the world...you cant prepare for everything and HUMANS MAKE MISTAKES...ESPECIALLY KIDS...THATS HOW THEY LEARN...and it always frustrates me in some movies when characters are dumber than usual but the threat is so large in this movie that one mistake can cascade so much, feels believable.
@danielgardner3601
@danielgardner3601 2 жыл бұрын
Personally I enjoyed the film, but they definitely were dumber than usual lol. After a year and a half they don't sound proof the place at all? Not to mention they brought all the kids on a supply run while monsters are running around. And then the fact she almost falls on the stairs because something (the nail) trips her and she doesn't care at all to check on that?! Still a fun film but I think the writing was just a tad lazy at some points and they could have manufactured a lot of these drama points with some simple rewrites so that they didn't have to rely on characters just making weird/dumb decisions.

That was my favourite reaction vid yet... your look of sheer joy at the end... and that level of character bad-assery (sure that's a word) reminded me very much of Sigourney's "get away from her you b!tch!" line. This one has been in my watch list for ages, so thanks for giving that little kick to finally watch it. The old man brings to mind a story I heard of a Hollywood couple in the 60s(maybe). What I remember was that she died of natural causes, then he died a few days later , leaving a note "not without her". The infant mask isn't "gas to keep it from crying". They're giving the baby oxygen while sealing him in a "soundproof" box. The whiteboard early on shows that the creatures are armored, but if you look after the feedback attack, they can no longer close the armor segments over their "ears", (assuming some short term muscle spasm effect) which is how the shotgun finally works.

I like that you recognized the implant. 80-90% of reactors see the first scene with the cochlear implant and say "oh, she has a hearing aid". If it was a hearing aid, she'd be dead. Hearing aids work by taking the sound it detects and amplifying it into the user's ear. The monsters would definitely be able to hear it. Cochlear implants take the sound they detect and transmit it directly into the ear inside the skull. Cochlear implant users can even connect a phone directly to the implant and play whatever they want as loud as they want and no one else could possibly hear. The reason hers puts out feedback when the monsters are around is because it was modified in her dad's failed attempt at fixing it.

this is one of the very few horror/thriller movies to make me cry as much as it did. A Quiet Place is one of the best directed films i've ever seen, alongside Train to Busan. john and emily's connection on screen is so strong and the family dynamic feels so real. the kids did so fantastically, especially the deaf girl. she's actually deaf in real life and i think that adds a lot to the way she portrays the character. the sound design in this movie is the best i've ever seen, especially, like you said, with the change in perspective between characters. seeing this in the theatre on opening night was one of the best experiences i've had as far as film goes. you could genuinely hear a pin drop. someone next to me bought a large popcorn and didn't end up eating a single piece lol. great reaction!

The part at the end when Blunt smirks a little when she racks the shotgun informs that this is the cathartic moment of the movie, even though it's like 2 seconds long.
