Special guest Al Oppenheiser, Chief Engineer at General Motors, sits down with Jessi Lang, Carlos Lago, Elana Scherr and Scott Evans to talk about the new Camaro Z/28.
While the street/track ZL1 utilizes a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 to provide its 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque, the Z/28 utilizes the outgoing Corvette Z06's 7.0-liter naturally aspirated LS7 V-8. Final power figures have not been announced, but Chevrolet promises at least 500 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The LS7 was selected over the supercharged LSA for its broad torque curve and high 7000-rpm redline, which makes it well-suited for high-speed track driving. Both the engine and Tremec TR606 six-speed manual transmission, the only available, have dedicated high-capacity cooling systems.
Wide Open Throttle appears every Thursday on the Motor Trend channel.

Reply 1 of 3 Active exhaust is a system that utilizes vacuum from the intake manifold, coupled with twin valves at the tailpipe to create an aggressive exhaust tuning for a production exhaust system. It gives you an aggressive exhaust note during start-up, as well as during an aggressive drive-away. The great thing about the active exhaust (AKA 'dual mode') is that because the valves open & close to changing flow of exhaust, it does not become overwhelming while cruising at steady speeds.

We actually have a fast shifting Automatic - the one in the ZL1 Automatic. The changes we made to pre-fill the clutch based on driver input of throttle position, gear, and engine rpm give us seamless, quicker, almost instant shifts. We also do quick 6-4-2 downshifts to improve shift time. -Al Oppenheiser

The ZL1 has what we call 'Grave-digger' for a diff. It has about a 25% higher pre-load from the factory to handle the outstanding launches you can do in a ZL1. The Z/28 has a helical diff, geared specifically for the track, and while it will still get down the strip for great 0-60 and quarter mile times, our testing has it slightly slower than the ZL1 times, even with the awesome grip of those tires. -Al Oppenheiser

Reply 1 of 2 No, we did not take out the back seats-- after all, Chevrolet already has a 2 seater - called a Corvette. We did, however, re-engineer the rear seat to use lighter weight foam and trim, and eliminated the fold-down feature and associated hardware, also to lighten the mass.

Reply 3 of 3 Other times of low throttle or cruising speeds, the valves close, & the exhaust sounds like a normal V8 (or V6 as the case may be - we offer it on our V6, too). -Al Oppenheiser

ZL1 is the ultimate Camaro for the street, track, and also the drag strip. It carries a mass penalty, though, if we want to be the ultimate road race vehicle ever produced in this segment. The ZL1 does not need any additional parts to make it a track or strip winner. The SS, which the Z/28 comes from, adds ultimate track performance by reducing mass, increasing grip, and offering the best in brakes, with no content added to improve the strip quarter mile time. -Al Oppenheiser

We do not currently have a factory roll cage for the Camaro Z/28, however we are looking into the possibility of offering a cage through our Performance Parts Catalog. We're not there, yet, but strongly desire to be ready with one to offer. -Al Oppenheiser

Reply 2 of 2 I will say that our competition eliminates the rear seat, and the structure they had to add in its place actually weighs more than the seat (according to their media sight) - not really a track focused decision, don't you think? You can comfortably take your friends for a spin (3 of them, too) in your Z/28 with a rear seat - although they better be close friends - still not a lot of room back there. -Al Oppenheiser

Reply 2 of 3 How it works - Looking at vehicle gear, engine speed, & competition mode of the vehicle, the valves open during start up or aggressive acceleration, & the driver is rewarded with an impressive, muscular exhaust note. The valves will remain open during deceleration to allow a burble or 'popping' feedback, clearly heard by the driver (& anyone in the vicinity). -Al Oppenheiser

It is not trim, it is called a chin spoiler, and it generates downforce at speed. You do not want to remove it, it serves a vital purpose.

Agreed! Curtain area and not valve count are important when it comes to power. Years ago we lacked the computers needed to model CFD. We lacked the material and manufacturing technology, and the fuel management and delivery systems needed and we relied on a brute force design (4 valves) to make power. Now 2 valve designs have awesome curtain area and make excellent power with great fuel efficiency. Plus they last longer, cost less, weigh less, and are more compact.

Great clip Jessi! So great the Z/28 is back and bad ass as ever!! My first car out of high school was a factory ordered 1979 Black on Black Z28 for $7k and change. The 2014 is the real deal - a true race car. If I didn't just by a new E92 M3 (V8) before they brought back that stupid turbo six for 2014, this would have been a real contender. Haven't had an American car in a long time. Kudos for GM, Chevrolet and America for bringing back cars like the new Z/28! "Bet anything Ford put's out" Go Al!! A much better looking car than the Mustang in my opinion, and what a sound coming out of that hand built 427. Nice!!!

Thank you for the response, I appreciate the work you're doing. I can't argue with the 1.5g deceleration, that's awesome. I may be the only one on here concerned with the price of carbon brakes, mostly because my budget would really be more on the SS level. I suppose if someone is buying a Z/28 they know what they're getting into, and it makes sense for a track car.

No one would make a DOHC with 2 valves, but it's important to make a distinction between the number of valves and the valvetrain. Like the free valve system I mentioned earlier. Much more compact than even a pushrod, but still uses 4 valves per cylinder.
