Nice conversation, I have several Seiko pieces and a Grand Seiko Spring drive GMT 201. I travel quite a bit so to me GMT movements are something that I look for in watches that I purchase. I used a Rolex Explorer II GMT, but did not like it as the outer bezel was fixed so no third time zone. I am considering a Rolex GMT master II but am on the fence as I have gotten used to the lumed outer bezel of the Grand Seiko, of which the Rolex does not have one. The movement of the second hand of the Grand Seiko spring drive is so beautiful in my opinion. I really like hearing both sides as it is informative for novices like myself.

Fed, Thanks for bringing my question to Hans concerning the ETA movement. As a watchmaker, does he see an ETA 2824 when he opens a Cuervo y Sobrinos Pirate ? When he looks at a Tissot Visodate does he see an ETA 2824 or is he looking at very different movements? Is there a difference in the service charge between a $7,000 ETA2824 and a $400.00 ETA2824? Thanks for bringing in Hans.

They’re talking about the Equation of Time. Sounds fancy, but it’s actually just the difference between what is called Mean Solar Time and True Solar Time. Every day we have is 24 hours, but WE averaged it that way. The actual time of a true solar day is not generally 24 hours, in fact it is 24 hours only 4 times a year, at every other point it is slightly longer or shorter due to the elliptical orbit of the earth around the sun..!

I don’t have any problems with companies creating and selling high end watches with ETA movements. I think all of that just comes from people wanting more and more for the money they’re spending. If a watchmaker creates a beautiful $10k or $20k watch with something like a modified ETA 2892 A2, what exactly is the problem? Sure, you could get that movement in a few $1k watches but that shouldn’t be that important. It’s a great movement. If the rest of the watch is impeccable, what’s the problem? That movement is proven and it can be relatively easily serviced by any watchmaker worth his salt. I’d rather have a time-tested, solid as hell movement as opposed to beta testing a brand new in-house movement. Sure there is a little more exclusivity and prestige with in-house movements but you’re already buying a $20k watch. That really should be all the exclusivity you need, ETA movement or not.
@devilzdandruff9199
@devilzdandruff9199 4 жыл бұрын
Well said. Also, not all brands are trusted. Rolex used to use Zenith movements, Breitling has in-house as well as eta. I have a Breitling that hasn’t been serviced in 14 years. Recently gave it to my watchmaker for servicing and even he was impressed. Watch is running -2 a week. -2 a fuckin’ week after no servicing for 14 years! Pressure test passed, etc. In other words, eta movement is excellent IN THE RIGHT WATCHMAKER’S HANDS. In this case, Breitling. Also, in house movements generally have the same problems etas but cost more to fix. Why bother.. honestly.

I think an ETA is acceptable if you are a new brand looking to invest more in design rather than the movement, as that will be what consumers base there initial opinion on. If you are past that I think a well decorated slightly modified ETA is fine... after all they are reliable and proven. But when you get to the big leagues in house is necessary in my opinion. It's a statement that you have spent on research and development, you are pioneers as opposed to plagiarists and that you have constructed the watch from top to bottom and your standards are maintained throughout. That is what we pay the big money for.

What brand hasn’t had outsourced movements at one point or another? Even Patek outsourced at one point. Rolex Daytona was outsourced too. I think that reputable watch brands tweak outsourced movements very well and they are more than reliable. The shouting and debate is fun on forums such as these. Breitling uses in-house and outsources. As long as the movement is COSC certified.. it’s a moot point imo.

I think in-house is more interesting but eta is more dependable. But still in-house shouldn't be 10x the cost because it's not like it actually costs the manufacturer 10x more to make it.
@JohannBauernfeind
@JohannBauernfeind 6 жыл бұрын
Dru Michael we did address that in the video. Developing a movement from scratch is about a five million dollars expense.

Johann Bauernfeind Yes but after that the manufacturer costs for each movement isn't 5 million dollars

You guys are wrong about the EOT. Back then, local time, the sundial as the reference, there was no linear elongation and longitude-wide-spread understanding of 'time'. That only came with the issue/problem of longitude at sea, the rail-road common time across many thousands of miles etc. The EOT wouldn't therefore have been understood as something special (complication) several hundreds years ago: it was the 'normal' interpretation of time back then (what nowadays sub-dial would show). And aligned, as said, with the sundial reading. BTW: look at long-case regulators at observatories back then: showing both solar mean time (your watch today), speak also sidereal time (but that's nevertheless another whole story) and solar local time (meridian passing of a heavily body at 'noon' i.e. largest altitude of body (sun, satellite (moon), planet, star) at a given longitude (take the rotation of 15 degrees per hour into account, without the phenomena of nutuation and precession, and really if you want to get precise, general relativity a la Einstein for GPS for sub-meter geo-position-detection (but please also don't forget about the problem related to the geoid). OK, all very complex. And tiresome. In other words forget about the modern EOT 'complication'. Because if you get there, actually the real 'complication' just starts (to haunt you). :-)

Well, it was useful for setting regulators accurately by determining the moment of noon (when the sun is at its highest point in the sky and the shadows it casts are shortest).

Mr Hans Thank for the valueable info, I heared that ETAs came 4-5 grades and the high end watch companies uses the highest grade of it; is that true? Best regards, W.F.

P.S. I have a feel it's the same guy, or group of guys, always asking you about the Grand Seiko Federico... Trolls hoping to stir trouble or embarrassment... Although I love Seikos, I'd probably be ignoring the Seiko questions at this point.

Just my two cents but I don't think you can do better than ETA in a sub $1000 watch. Above $3000 it is in house all the way. $1000 to $3000 is a vast grey area.

I feel personally that it's crazy to buy a watch for 5,000 dollars when you can get the exact movement in a $500 dollar hamilton I'm not gonna pay 4,500 extra just for the name and finishing

Federico Talks Watches I look them, good realiable swiss watches.. but i will not buy a fashion brand for watches no matter how good its.. its like D&G watches.. or Channel watches.. . .. the guy is rich.. and buy is own swiss watch factory/facility. thats it. I properly watch brands.. like Zenith.. Oris.. Orient or even Certina.

You obviously didnt look it up. This is a partnership with Richemont. The case is made by Cartier and it houses a Jaeger LeCoultre column wheel chronograph movement... This takes a dump all over Oris and Certina.
