Great interview, Pete is an icon of music and a train buff, more people should use the trains and leave their cars at home to go to work, whether it's London, Manchester or Newcastle. Never seen a duff Talking Pints yet, brilliant Nigel 👍!!

@@teamdoa Yes AndyPandy you're right, for some people living in remote areas or nowhere near a train station, they have no choice on whether to use the train or not. However, for the majority of people that's a non-issue, they can take a train, no hours of queuing on the motorways, no parking problems, can work on the trains with laptops, many advantages 👍!!

So you use a car and judge the cost by the cost of petrol rather than the real cost per mile including depreciation, service, tyres etc.? All while happily polluting those areas you drive past. And no I am no climate warrior but I do know which is less damaging to our climate.

@@1chish I judge the cost by how much money I have in my bank account, it is nice when people who are free and able to spend money without consequence lecture others. Edit: I have been to see him three times in four years, bloody hell I am a great polluter, if trains were not as expensive it might have been more.

@@elwoodbluesmorris2120 Don't get on your high horse with me I am OAP so know better than you how tight cash can be. I cannot afford a car any longer but used to run one when I worked so know the real costs. Now you said you can't afford train travel and refer to whats in your bank. But I was just pointing out that the cost of petrol (or diesel) is NOT the real cost. The RAC indicate a cost per mile at some £0.667p. So a 100 mile trip will actually cost £66.7p NOT the cost of petrol. Maybe you should do another calculation? Or maybe buy a discount rail card?

The real purpose of HS2 is capacity - the west and east cost mainlines are absolutely RAMMED to capacity, not with people but with trains, having to mix a 60mph freight with 125mph passenger creates substantial issues operationally. The idea should be turfing long distance express services which aren't stopping on to HS2 to basically open the taps wide open and let the thing fly, leaving more room for container trains etc doing 60mph to mix it up with 100mph regional service so the disparity is only 40mph on a route which already has slow and fast lines. Pete is right, the railway network is Victorian, the difference being they would tunnel under a whole mountain inside a month or so, now it would take them 3 years!!

Great chat and far too short. I'm six years older then Pete but share his views about the Railways. Dr Beeching destroyed the British rail system because the government had put its eggs in the car market. Thereafter it was a continuous increase in fares and decrease in reliability and service frequency . For years I travelled to work by train and witnessed the reduction of passenger numbers , and formed in my mind what I called the BR syndrome . The more passengers that are lost the more they charge the few remainin g. Eventually I had to get a car because the rail service had became a joke . The last time that I was in Phoenix Arizona about 6 years ago ,staying at Scotsdale you could still catch a bus after midnight , and people used it. What FU this country was unions , and during my working life was a member of four of them , a waste of money .

The pro arguments are strong and have substance, HS2 is breath taking on some levels, dynamic on other levels, it fits in with the greats like Brunel and Stevenson, the anti brigade limp points range from the bizarre to the ridiculous, fits in with a handbag and those who were actually concerned already played a constructive part in the planning ... cheers

As much as I detest Farage's politics this was a good interview. I have to agree with him that HS2 will suck people and business to London. Early on it was described as a commuter service for rich people, and I have to agree this is what it will become. If Boris is serious about levelling up, he and subsequent governments, he will have to discourage businesses from doing so be it through tax or subsidy in order to base themselves in the north.

I agree, rich politicians and the like will be able to buy up houses in the country, pushing up the prices there too. Will ruin the countryside though motorways have done a good job of that.
