Dive deep into the world of Australian television with Talking Prisoner hosts, Matt Batten and Tim Burns, as they unravel the storied career of the remarkable Babs McMillan, most fondly remembered for her iconic portrayal of Cass Parker in 'Prisoner'.
A versatile actress, Babs’ resume boasts of impressive roles in several hit series like 'City Homicide', 'Secrets', 'Rafferty’s Rules', 'Special Squad', 'The Young Doctors', 'Skyways', and in her recent ventures, 'The Honeysuckle Sisters' and 'Celebrity House Cleaner'.
From 1983 to 1984, Babs was an irreplaceable force on 'Prisoner'. Spanning 60 episodes, from 401 to 460, her character became emblematic of the show's capacity to tackle gritty and hard-hitting narratives, best exemplified in the unforgettable confrontation with Officer Bridges in the garden shed.
In this in-depth episode, you will discover:
Babs' childhood memories, familial influences, and experiences that shaped her school years.
Recollections from 'The Young Doctors' days, encapsulating the vibrant and dynamic Sydney TV scene of that era.
The serendipitous journey of how she clinched the role of Cass Parker, her initial reactions, and the legacy she created with the character.
An analytical dive into the intense and gripping face-off with Officer David Bridges, the preparation, and the aftermath.
The camaraderie, challenges, and memorable moments shared with the Prisoner cast during her tenure.
Behind-the-scenes insights into her decision to bid adieu to the series.
A candid segment where Babs generously addresses and responds to burning questions posed by the show's ardent fans.

Yes…I’ve only come across your podcasts in the last week or so and of course some of them are over a year old….I did notice a difference though with this interview(and I acknowledge that it’s perhaps easier when the person is sitting in front of you rather than on zoom)…there is less of what we used to call at my workplace…”twilight time”..that is…the time gap between when the question was answered and the next question was asked…the conversation flowed more easily this time….btw..I’ve met Babs a few times….it was many many years ago when I was with my then partner who was in the “business”…I remember her as being as engaging and funny as she was in your interview…..cheers! @@TalkingPrisoner

Guys, what a fantastic interview. Thanks for bringing us the pleasure of Babs talking about one of my favourite characters from the show. It’s funny, how I do see Cass in some of her facial expressions. So great too with you being together for the interview. As apposed to having the time delay of zoom. So mad at myself for not getting a question in on time. Thanks again. Greeting from Cyprus 💙

Babs Mcmillan (Cass Parker) was one of PCBH best ever actresses. I truly thought she was fully Australian. Is she from England or is she a true Aussie? Either way, Goes to show how much of an immense actress she was on PCBH. Loved how she could switch from caring happy go lucky to manic and sadistic in an instant. A truly magnifcent actress glad to see you well Babs, From Liverpool UK.

"Act better!" was a brilliant comment/note towards the end.. Method actors can be best summed up with one word.. "knobheads.." It's a job guys.. (gals) You're not reinventing the wheel. Or indeed even inventing a newer better telephone. Which was a far bigger achievement than anything any actor has managed in the entire history of TV and film.

Excellent interview, Babs is charming to listen to, and I also enjoyed her talking about The Young Doctors, another favourite soapie of mine. I just wish ViaVision would release the rest of the series. I loved her talking about, in Prisoner, always having to handle the "live stock" because Cass was a country bumpkin! Snakes, cats, mice... Also, it was intriguing listening to Babs detailed account of the beheading of David Bridges and how it was shot. It's a shame the final shot of his head on the shed floor was cut at the last minute after all the work that went into making it. I always leave these interviews feeling that they had an absolute ball making Prisoner, and put 110% into it. Floor Manager Top Up shaving his arms to shuffle Minnie's playing cards! Brilliant. They worked hard and played hard. Btw, I like the studio setup. It adds to the intimacy, you all in the same studio. Best channel on KZfaq! I'd love for you interview Tina Bursill, who Babs mentions. She's a fab actress.

Hiya, yes I've seen them all ! They're all great, but my favourite ones, including this one with Babs, are with Louise Siversen, who is, wow, such a fascinating and passionate lady - I loved listening to her talking about her development of Lou... Lisa Crittenden is also fantastic to listen to, and I also thoroughly enjoyed Anne Lucas and Coral Drouyn's insightful stories about how the show was written, and storylines planned. I am a "peripheral Prisoner fanatic". Probably on my eighth run now (it's back in the UK, streaming on "My5") ! What I love about this channel is that I know exactly what your guests are talking about - you can journey back into the memories of your guests along with them, and you can remember the storylines they're referring too, and that's a dream for Prisoner fanatics like me who want to know more! I really hope you can meet Tina Bursill, she's a favourite of mine, from Skyways, through Prisoner, and all the way to Wentworth. That's the ultimate for me guys! 😊

The bit about Babs being beaten by a teacher at school reminds me of the time in about 1978 or so when my own younger sister was walloped by a teacher at school. (This would have been just about the time that teachers hitting kids was being pretty much outlawed completely. Years too late for me sadly lol.) Well my mum was a broad Glaswegian, though we lived in South Yorkshire where mum had moved to in the late 1950's for work. Mum marched my sister back to school and confronted the teacher with a very forthright "Don't do that again lassie.. or else.." Haha.. Poor woman probably had her life flash before her.

Being from just outside Edinburgh in a rural ex mining community on the Forth estuary I was gasping to find out where she lived here but she sadly never said exactly. What another lovely lady, very based and friendly, could easily have sat at listened for another hour. Loving the studio setting, makes u look more handsome than ever mate lol Seriously though great fresh new look for the show there, looking forward to you next instalment, and I hope you are still going to return to the Wentworth building too? Can I just ask for the first time when the actors worked with Shelia, you guys never asked the question. was it they didn't get on because Shelia was leaving & she didn't appove of the new top dogs as Wendy said Shelia didn't like her. Just wondered that's all. I would be interesed if Babs said don't mention Shelia.
