Interesting perspectives. As a Black American living in EAST Germany (and having visited West Germany as well), I find Germans have been nicer to me than my fellow peeps in the States. In fact, just today, a guy from a coffee shop asked me if I wanted a fork with the cake I ordered to go, which is different from what the guy said at 9:17. I was just telling my friend today about how I cannot get over how nice the Germans are to me. Every day, I see random acts of kindness, including Germans soliciting help on their own accord.

I think Americans are "friendlier" and more polite when you just know them very vaguely. But when Germans are friendly and nice to you it comes from the heart and they really mean it

Danke! I didn't know the word, "Gretchenfrage" so I researched it. It turns out it comes from Goethe's Faust, i.e. a conversation about religion between Faust and Gretchen. I love learning words that have a cool etymology.

I hadn't heard this saying either, and now I love it. In Holland we say: 'This is the ham question' - and like you, I researched it because I had no clue where it actually comes from. It turns out to come from a quiz on tv in the 1950s where contestants received a ham as the final prize. So watching Easy German makes me learn more about my own language too :) But now I live in Germany so I will definitely use 'Gretchenfrage' as soon as I can!

That's so interesting to hear germans say that new yorkers are super friendly and helpful when New York is famous in the US for being the most hostile city!

It's only hostile regarding professionals: People with white-collar jobs or busy schedules are way grouchier, while millennial-types - even the busy ones - are often much more polite and much, much, much, much more PC.

I loved it this Episode! I really think New Yorkers are more open to help stangers as I was there in 2010 and I got kinda "adopted " by a family there for a few days! And now I realize why my Father is skeptical, because he's german but lived all his life in Brazil but this german characteristic is rooted in him!

I appreciate the commentators who express authentic and thoughtful observations. I realize that most of the interviewees are first time visitors and haven't had time to formulate opinions. But PC comments are not useful or interesting. I like what the teacher had to say. And to any new visitors, America is a customer service satisfaction industry. So someone offering a spoon, etc. Generally is more weighted to business ideals, than consideration ideals.

lin g It's both, really. Customer satisfaction reflects the culture. If the culture doesn't value a particular service, like offering a spoon, then a company won't offer it. The main difference might be that the US is more market oriented, but I would point out that if there weren't a cultural expectation, that a business wouldn't bother doing it.

Ich komme aus New York und bin überrascht, dass die Deutschen im Video haben scheinbar nicht bemerkt, wie weniger freundlich die New Yorkers, im Vergleich mit denen von anderen Orten in den USA, sind. In viele amerikanischen Orten sagen die Leute einfach so "Hello" auf der Straße, ohne Grund. Aber in New York gibt es sehr wenig Blickkontakt und wenn man einfach so "Hallo" sagen würde, dann würden die Leute "Er ist verrückt!" denken. In jedem Land ist der größte Unterschied wahrscheinlich zwischen den städtischen und den dörflichen Orten. Vielleicht sind die Leute im Video in der touristischen Bewegung verwickelt. Im Alltag sind New Yorkers meistens reserviert, sogar vielleicht unhöflich...nicht so anders als in einer Deutschen Stadt. Aber die meisten haben guten Herzen. Übrigens wann ich letztes Mal in München war, half mir eine Eisstanddame, einen Löffel zu finden. :)

Vielleicht sind die New Yorker "deutscher" als andere Amerikaner, und fallen somit nicht so auf? In Österreich begrüßt man Fremde auf der Straße jedenfalls nur in kleinen Dörfern. In jeder Stadt ist das unüblich, und wer es trotzdem tut, wirkt wie ein Dorftrottel.

ich komme auch aus NY und lebe schon lange in der Schweiz. im Vergleich zu den Schweizern sind New Yorkers unglaublich freundlich. das gelten auch für die Deutschen. Amerikaner sind nicht oberflächlich. Es ist einfach nett mitenand. Grüssli us di Schwiiz

Good show ! Too often one hears comments from people who tried to see New York in a couple of days. It rakes a relatively long time to get to understand the place whether you are an auslander or american. It is not just about the sights, its the people, diverse and full of life.

This is a very interesting video. I have heard that the English think that we are very open and friendly as well. They also say that Americans are more open with their feelings. Very interesting. In den USA und Kanada wohnen viele Deutschen.In den Sommerferien kann man viele Deutschen am Flughafen und in den Zügen treffen.Ich benutze jede Gelegenheit mt ihnen zu sprechen und ein paar neue Leute kennenzulernen.Ich genieße jede Episode von Easy Germn und hoffe das Cari und Janusz eine Episode auch in Kanada drehen können.

Wow, das war ziemlich krass! Ich wusste gar nicht, das es so viele Deutschsprecher in New York City gibt. In Texas ist Spanisch bestimmt die zweitstärkste Sprache nach English. Nicht genau schwierig, die Ursache herauszufinden :D

Ich kann nur ein paar Sätze sagen. Der USA ist die Mutter auf dieser welt. Es gibt so viele Services ,die andere Länder niemals in unserm Leben haben. Der Markt ist sehr stark und die Handeler ,Restaurants und Firmen sollen den Kunden das beste Service anbieten

Ein sehr interessantes Video, danke! Ich kann dem wirklich zustimmen, dass die Deutschen eher skeptischer und vielleicht zurückhaltender sind, vor allem Ausländern gegenüber. Aber das ist genau das, was ich an den Deutschen wirklich liebe! :) Wenn man ihr Vertrauen gewonnen hat, sind die Deutschen sehr freundlich und offen, sie könnten einem sogar etwas persönliches über sich selbst erzählen, was man vorher nie erwartet hätte.

Woman at 7:46: "New York" isn't entirely an island, Manhattan is an island. New York is composed of five boroughs: Staten Island, Manhattan, the Bronx, Brookyn, and Queens. "Staten" is pronounced with a short "A" by the way, to rhyme with "Static".

You guys should head to Middlebury, Vermont to Middlebury College where they have a 100 year old German language school founded by German immigrants. I went 3 summers! Leider kann ich nicht so gut auf deutsch ausreden wann ich schreibe etwas aber ich wohne in Deutschland! lol!

At 9:44 you translated the sentence: "man kann das nur sehr verallgemeinern" as "you can't just really generalise it". It seems to me that a better translation would be "You can only really generalize it [and generalizations can be dangerous]".

(EINLADUNG, heheh) Na ihr aus Easy German. Seit fast zwei Jahren kenne ich dies Chanel und es ist ja bloss immer gut neue Woerter lernen und auch ein bisschen von der Geschichte und von der Kulturen zu sehen. Daher wuerde ich ihnen gern vorschlagen Brasilien zu besuchen. Es gibt viele Deutsche, besonders in São Paulo oder in Suedbrasilien, wo mano sogar fast ganze deutsche Staedte finden, wo noch Deutsch gesprochen wird. Bitte schaut mal im Internet ind ich wurde mich echt freuen euch zu helfen, wenn ich braucht. Auch ein Wunsch von mir waere einige Episode machen fuer "Easy Portuguese". Ich habe wirklich Interesse dafuer (oder darueber, immer diese Praepositionen). Liebe Gruesse aus Brasilien!!!

I believe you're talking about German-Americans maybe? So Americans that have German heritage because that is in fact the heritage with the highest share in the American society. Especially in the mid-west.

Eigentlich wenn ich jemend hier in Deutschland frage "Kann ich Ihnen helfen" oder "was suchen Sie" erschrecken sich die Leute und benahmemen sich als ob ich etwas Falsch gemacht habe. Die Leute de ich seit einem Jahr getroffen habe, waren nicht so gut darauf wie Isi und Cari.

Hallo, könnte mir jemand helfen, die Fragen zu lösen. Was bedeutet eigentlich "darauf in dem Satz von Cari "Wie sind die Menschen hier so drauf in New York?"? Und gibt es einen Unterschied zwischen "das bin ich gewöhnt" und "daran bin ich gewöhnt"? Und Cari sagte, "Wie läuft sowas ab im Vergleich zu wie in Deutschland Politik funktioniert?" Ich weiß, dass nach "im Vergleich zu" ein Nomen kommen soll oder man verbindet das mit 'dass' wie: "im Vergleich dazu, dass..." Könnte mir jemand sagen, wie ich den Satzbau von "im Vergleich zu wie S+V" verstehen sollte? Lg Euiyoung

1. _Wie sind die Leute so drauf._ ist eine umgangssprachliche Abwandlung von _Wie sind die Leute so?_. 2. Es besteht nur ein sehr feiner Unterschied zwischen _Daran bin ich gewöhnt._ und _Das bin ich gewöhnt._. Letzteres ist ein bisschen genereller. 3. Um den Satz korrekt zu verstehen, sollten wir ihn vielleicht verdeutlichen: "Wie läuft sowas ab, im Vergleich zu: _Wie in Deutschland Politik funktioniert._? Der Satz ist allerdings recht kompliziert formuliert, was ich darauf zurückführen würde, dass Cari einen Satz in Kopf hatte, den sie anders beendete als der Anfang es andeutete.

Es ist die lateinische Abkürzung für _pergite_ oder _perge_. Das doppelte _pp._ zeigt den Plural an. Ein deutsches Äquivalent wäre ein _und so fort_ nach einem _und so weiter_ = _und so weiter und so fort._
