Yeah. You get a gratuity for providing a service. Technically their paycheck is a gratuity and that should be the only one they are allowed otherwise they start to play favorites.

Heck, even as a bag boy working at a Safeway grocery store in 1981-83, we were prohibited from accepting a tip from customers for service such as carrying the customer’s purchases to their cars. How can a supreme court judge accept “tips” “gifts” “gratuity” without being influenced?

Because our legal system was set up without oversight of the highest level, Grant, and in order to change that, Congress has to vote for it, but won't with MAGA in office. The founding fathers didn't anticipate a psychopathic president, extremist party, or a corrupt majority on SCOTUS. It's a terrible problem affecting the whole world, but the majority of us are working to save democracy.

The gratuities decision is ridiculous. What's to say there isn't a wink-wink nudge-nudge agreement before hand that this 'gratuity' would be paid after completion of the service? Removing the ability to receive a gratuity would also remove the appearance of impropriety, which of course these corrupt justices don't want to happen.

I can see how this can be so easily corrupted. The two parties could have easily made a back room deal, "If you do this for me, I will reward you with a huge tip after the fact." or, "I would really appreciate you doing this for me..." Yeah, no possibility for corruption here at all.

regarding "gratuities": the Conservatives seem very centered around making it almost impossible to enforce any sort of corruption charges. You have to prove that Senator Menendez agreed to support someone's legislative agenda "after" they gave him a suitcase full of gold bars? Alito quoted an actual witch burning judge in Dobbs, but failed to note that, also at that time, 1 in 3 women died in childbirth. Pre-labor, a winding sheet was prepared to either swaddle a baby or wrap up a woman's corpse, since maternal deaths happened so often.

Isn't it extraordinary that we can accept that there are at least two meanings of the word "fact"? On the one hand, in everyday discourse the term 'fact' is taken to mean a statement about a real, verifiable datum. In the courts however, a fact is what police officers write on their complaints, and eventually what the judge decides is a fact. In other words, the legal system depends on opinions while couching that in language that means something else in everyday discourse.

The whole lobby thing needs addressed. Any contributions made by corporate lobbies needs to be in an account for the citizens. Citizens should have a say in how the contributions are dispersed. To contribute to sway votes in The People's House by individuals who forget who they represent is egregious. This is at the core of many of the problems happening in the US. Social Media companies won’t say boo because they know that logically the US should be making social media legally responsible for what is published through their platform. This would mess up their business model. So cooperation is what they need to do. Something needs to happen or the US, as a democracy, is toast.
