To use mental health as an excuse is like saying to people : 'don't worry, if you have mental health problems, feel free to do what you want, cos you've got a ready-made get out of jail free card'. The fact is that many people with some form or other of mental illness, depression or other condition, would not wish to break the law or cause harm or hurt to others. I worked in mental health/psychiatric establishments and there were many decent patients who found life confusing and difficult and hard to cope with, but were not wishing to commit crimes. As for the criminally insane, one often has to ask: 'What came first, the criminality or the illness?'. The Yorkshire Ripper, for example, was evil first, and ill second. And others like him, I have also found it quite obvious that pyschologists, psychiatrists, social workers and probation officers etc do not have a superior morality compared to the rest of us. Many probation officers, for instance, merely follow tick box procedures without holding any apparent ethical grounding , but are resolved to see their clients get of with the lightest possible sentences no matter how hideous their crimes. Their client's victims don't get a second thought. These 'professionals' want an 'outcome' on their C.V., and that's that. If they can get some thug off with a slap on the wrist they consider it a result.
