Real Love is a creative tool kit of mindfulness exercises and meditation techniques that help you to truly engage with your present experience and create deeper love relationships with yourself, your partner, friends and family, and with life itself.
Sharon Salzberg, a leading expert in Lovingkindness meditation, encourages us to strip away layers of negative habits and obstacles, helping us to experience authentic love based on direct experience, rather than preconceptions. Across three sections, Sharon explains how to dispel cultural and emotional habits, and direct focused care and attention to recapture the essence of what it is to love and be loved.
With positive reflections and practices, Sharon teaches us how to shift the responsibilities of the love that we give and receive to rekindle the powerful healing force of true connection. By challenging myths perpetuated by popular culture, we can undo the limited definitions that reduce love to simply romance or passion, and give the heart a much needed tune-up to connect ourselves to the truest experience of love in our daily lives.

This is fantastic. This talk is so much more than the words she's saying. Look at all the downvotes! .. amazing! .. to cause such a response in the audience as a meditation instructor is an amazing accomplishment! You'd struggle to find a more cognitively disruptive Zen insult for our society. Gold. And whats interesting is that Sharon actually teaches at the meditation center I frequent (CIMC) though I've not attended one of her classes. But here's the thing, and you'll have to take my word for it.. I'm a meditation student of 8 years, and formerly a 327lb gamer, now a 182lb marathoner, running addict, "mountaineer", and alpine climber.. all useless labels for how I merely chose to express my humanness. But unlike all the people taking out their externally learned contempt for the overweight on Sharon.. I am, statistically, suppose to have both internal and external contempt, and dislike her physical expression more than anyone.. but I don't, I can't, I don't even feel a pull.. why? .. because of teachers and teachings like hers. Just look at her; she has no contempt for herself. She's the same as other overweight people in NZ, majority of Europe, and a bunch of places I've seen that face no discernible discrimination. How would you, with your faults, like to be that free? You, my dear downvoters, have the most to gain here.. if you are willing to follow down the rabbit hole of where your contempt comes from, and how could it be, for someone you've never met?

This comment is refreshing. I was really bewildered by the superficial and mean comments, because thoughts like those didn't even occur to me while hearing this talk. It's pretty disheartening, especially given what she was saying about loving kindness.

trying to focus on the video and it's so hard. I just can't. too many thoughts and feelings in me. I've fallen in a trap again. falling for yet again: another unavailable person. dear God, why do I do this to myself? I'm old now and I've never had love. never ever have I been in a real romantic relationship... the pain of this is so horrific, it truly rapes my soul.

Sharon Salzberg quote highlights from this video: “(Lovingkindness) is meant to be a live, vital sense of connection-to not feel so isolated, not to isolate others, to have a sense of being a part of a greater whole.” “What's it like when we're not considering ourselves separate and apart? Where the kind of constructs of ‘self’ and ‘other’ and ‘us’ and ‘them’-the great big ‘other’ out there-are seen as constructs?” “The reality is that we live in an interconnected universe. It's a world that's pointing to that all of the time. But our values, our behavior, don't always reflect that truth.” “Being able to see more clearly, to see more accurately, to see the interconnected nature of things, is one of the strongest ways to leap into a sense of lovingkindness.” “Love doesn't mean you like everybody. It actually doesn't even mean you necessarily like anybody. But we do understand our lives have something to do with one another. It's a deep, deep acknowledgement that we do live in this kind of world of connection.” “Interconnection is that fundamental recognition that what happens over there doesn't nicely stay over there. It really ripples out over here. And what we do, where we put our energy, what we care about, it matters because it's going to ripple out in just that same way.” “Meditation is a practice of resilience.” “Our assumptions of aloneness and a sense of isolation, our assumptions of fundamental difference, are really assumptions. And we get to question them.” “The fundamental question is, what do we think love is? And does it bring us down? Does it make us stupid? Does it make us sentimental? Or, can it be this kind of clarifying vision of the way the world actually is and how we can respond to it?” “Remember that our goal is to just let go and begin again. If you have to do that billions of times, that doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. You're doing fine … No matter how many times you may have to let go and begin again, it's not a problem. That's the point, actually.” “The most important moment is the moment after you've been distracted, after you've been lost.” “Today, with unprecedented threats to our planet and divisions among people, awareness of our interdependence is no longer optional. It's critical that we widen our attention to include those we encounter as we go about our daily lives.” “As our experiences of the universality of suffering grows, our sense of interconnection deepens, and we begin to wish others could be free in a new way, in spite of their actions, their beliefs, or their positions in the world.” “One of the great hindrances people face is their expectations.” “Equanimity doesn't mean indifference, coldness, or withdrawal. It means balance-the balance born of wisdom. It's like perspective.” “Empathy is an essential building block for a state of compassion, but it's also not considered sufficient for a state of compassion.”

With all due respect, I find it puzzling that Sharon Salzberg is so overweight. Unless she has some sort of Physiological condition that makes her metabolism to not work well, I just cannot understand how somebody who teaches mindfulness and self-love could be abusing her system like that (assuming, that is to say, that she is overweight because she cannot stop eating the wrong kinds of food)

@@jorabohem Hearing her words is one thing, but I do really want to understand why she is overweight myself. If loving yourself has a benefit to your life besides simply feeling better, wouldn't she have done something. I want to know, is she just no longer caring about what she does to herself because she accepts herself?

lamegalectora I’ve wondered about that too, but my guess is the commenter below is ‘right,’ whatever that means. Who cares- we’re going to die one day soon anyways and no one’s perfect. I think maybe Sharon has just ‘let go’ and maybe overeating is her ‘vice,’ but like, who cares? It’s ok. Maybe she accepts that she’s going to ‘go’ sometime sooner or later, so why not enjoy the food she likes. I don’t know, just my two cents.

I kind of like Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu's translation of that word as "goodwill" instead of "love", because someone you've screwed over before in your past might not want your love or loving-kindness. He also said something related about a snake being in his hut, but I don't remember the rest of that story. Not that anyone asked me. As you were.

This might be a tad impolite -- but -- mindfulness is supposed to be a silver bullet when it comes to over-eating or 'mindless' eating. If you have honed you ability to be mindful enough you would only eat that which upon reflection you really do want to eat. So must we conclude that Sharon, with over 40 years of training in this field wants to be like this, and health outcomes be damned? I'm sure she has addressed this somewhere, does anyone know what is going on?
