Putting Mainoo in the midfield, still doesn't solve the problem that Declan Rice isn't a defensive midfielder. Rice wants to press and his natural inclination isn't to sit and dictate from deep. Get Wharton in that position and that would free-up Rice and Foden to do what they naturally do.

Would be good if in addition to pass completion stats, they also broke it down into a percentage of how many passes were played forward vs passes played sideways or back. If some players really are playing it safe because they are keeping such an eye on their numbers that might encourage some more forward thinking play.

I am not an expert, so I am relying mostly on analysis of pundits. So, I think that the England team are still anxious about their back line, especially Centre back area. They have deflected their deliberate play with the issue of the Trent A.A. midfield ‘experiment!’ Now, if they are let go against the Swiss, as Danny Murphy says here, it would help them ‘neutralize’ the Swiss.
