But that incentivises a low block, no risk taking and so on for the lower league club who want a replay. Do we want that? Maybe make it a one-off game (with penalties after 90 mins) and automatically give it to the lower league club to host so they get the financial benefit. We'd see more teams taking risks angling for a giant killing then, and it's another way to support the pyramid based on performance.

Thomas Frank, the manager of a premier league club that has never won a major trophy claiming that a replay and therefore still being in the FA cup is the "worst possible outcome", is frankly astounding. It really isn't that farfetched for Brentford to go a cup run and have an outside chance of winning it. What's even more astounding is that Brentford have spent the vast majority of their history in the third and fourth tiers of English football and will have benefitted from cup replays in the past.

Yeh it is bewildering to hear, one has to pull their jaw from the floor. The replays in the FA Cup are a unique flavour that you have to navigate. If you take them away then it becomes almost identical to the league cup but with more teams. Part of the prestige of winning the FA cup is that you run the risk of these replays so strategies are required to negotiate this.

Simple: 1 If clubs from the same division are drawn against each other, then it’s concluded on the day. 2. If clubs of different divisions are drawn against each other, a replay takes place. That way it ensures the ‘smaller clubs’ get a replay that helps with their finances. Nobody wanted to see a reply of Everton v Palace, but non-West Ham fans would love to see Bristol City turn us over in the replay.

The F.A Cup is over 100 years old, it's an iconic symbol in English Football. Why? because it brings all the clubs together in one Tournament, so a non League Club, could play at Anfield, Old Trafford, Ethihad etc. Which would then lead to TV coverage, if that same club gets a Replay, they then earn more money. Some lower League Clubs, have been saved because of the money, they earned from a good Cup run. So if they get a replay, they earn more money. The big clubs don't care, as they don't earn big money from replays, so couldn't care less if they scrap it. All this changing things in Football, is getting stupid now. Look at the Champions League, when we had that season where Tottnham and Liverpool, had that epic semi Finals. When they beat Barcelona and Ajax. When Away goals counted, they have changed that rule now. So we won't see that again, as teams won't go for it in away games anymore. People are wanting to change to much to the game, its been fine, for decades now. Just leave the beautiful game alone, can't even put a decent tackle in anymore, with VAR and the soft players. Thats why in the 90s and early 00s, it was football at its peak, as it had the right balance.
@jaycfc6955
@jaycfc6955 4 ай бұрын
The away goals rule was the worst rule in European football. Away team in the 1st leg only got 90mins to score away goals whereas in the 2nd leg the away team could possibly get 120mins to score away goals ! How was that fair ? 2nd placed teams in the group stages played away in the 2nd leg of the first knockout round so we're getting the advantage of 120mins . How was that fair to the group Winners ! Uefa should have changed that rule 20 years ago at least. Jose mourinho's Inter Milan benefited from this unfair rule on their way to champions league victory!

This is flawed but I wonder if this could work. On the day the draw is made, there could be a voting system, each team can vote for or against replaying the tie if there is a draw, and if both teams vote no then it goes to extra time/pens on the day if necessary, this would most likely stop PL clubs complaining whilst still benefitting lower league clubs financially
@neilanderson6280
@neilanderson6280 4 ай бұрын
In Portugal, I think they have no domestic cup replays. It goes straight to penalties. However, any side from a lower league automatically gets a home draw. This does remove the possibility of a big away draw and subsequent gate receipts windfall...but it seems to me it reduces fixture congestion while also giving smaller clubs an advantage, making upsets a bit more likely
@andrewharrison7767
@andrewharrison7767 4 ай бұрын
It's down to fatigue say managers in a 20 team league, because several of them couldn't beat teams 2 divisions below, who play 8 games more a season. Meanwhile the big clubs Sounness cites are happy that the Champijons league will mean 2 games more, and European football for 7 or 8 clubs. On top of that, clubs fly off for end of season friendlies - Considering Liverpool played their youth team, whilst playing World Cup in 2019 Brentford don't deserve to complain - if they don't want the replay, simply forfeit the game

@@ryanjones6166oh no, the debate is already settled in my head overall, just play the replay and stop moaning. There was a few arguments made here overall If arsenal Vs Liverpool draw yesterday, seeing them in an FA cup third round replay is a bit dull, we've just seen it. The problem is atmosphere in the cup. Getting those teams that drew into a new draw for the replay instead, at least adds more excitement. Also, a league two team could play away against man united for example, draw, and then end up playing Liverpool away for the replay, meaning even more money for the lower league teams. Which seems to be the biggest argument. The early rounds of the fa cup are very boring to a lot of people and it's because given the choice, you would rather win the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, Championship - Probably even League one and the Europa conference league or finish in the top four in the premier league before you actually would want to win the FA Cup nowadays.

Jim's argument that the Bolton keeper played well and therefore deserves another game is inherently stupid. Players have great games and then lose all the time. That's part of playing any sport.

I say play replays and allow the big clubs to give the kids from the academy a game. More chance of upsets that way.

Ask both clubs if they want replay, if one says yes, you have it. Both say no, then don't. Not chaos.

I am ALL FOR scrapping replays and proceeding with one game which ends in a penalty shootout. If my local team faces Newcastle at home and we draw then yeah sure a replay would be great for finances. But winning a penalty shootout gives you the same chance to progress as your opponent. Going through will also provide lesser teams with more money than a replay ever could, plus a higher chance of facing a Premier League team anyway. So where is the problem with scrapping replays?
@andreidoanca4262
@andreidoanca4262 4 ай бұрын
this is about the money that a lesser team would get if they play a replay at Anfield, Old Trafford, and all of those big names. For the lower league team is about some extra cash they can get by playing the reverse fixture.
@Mac_Kymera
@Mac_Kymera 4 ай бұрын
@@andreidoanca4262 but they will have more chance of going through in 1 game with a penalty shootout at the end of it if they win instead of proceeding with a replay. If they win and go through from the first game then they will get more money than a replay would, with an even higher chance of going away to a Prem team.

there's no guarantee that the next match is played away at a big stadium so there's no guarantee of the extra income. I get what you're saying, unfortunately this is more about money than it is about football@@Mac_Kymera

Simple get rid of replays and where a prem team plays a lower league team, give all gate/tv money to the club in a lower division regardless of where it’s played. It’s peanuts to prem clubs anyway

If the premier league teams don’t want to play replays why do they field a weaker line up. This diminishes the FA Cup straight away. Pick a stronger team and get the job done.

Should go straight to penalties, the amount of fixtures is insane. Conclude the game on the day there and then.

Yes we need cup replays. Most clubs need them for the extra cash. Let's keep having replays again until there's a winner

Why not just let the clubs decide. If they agree to play it out on the day then so be it. If one disagrees then they do a replay. End of.

A replay can be a huge financial windfall for small clubs and they work hard to get a tie against big clubs. To take this away just because the big clubs don't like it is elitist and the replays should encourage big clubs to take it seriously and field a team to win

Instead of removing replays, or, god forbid, removing an entire domestic cup competition, how about removing any one of the half dozen European cup competittions, which is the main reason that the big 6 want to play less domestic matches. It's all about money.

The FA cup is an English tradition. Keep it how it is. Foreign managers need to start showing some respect for the domestic competitions. If you don’t want a replay, then play your first team instead of the youth academy and smash the opposition.

Also why the FA Cup has fallen as a relevant competiton because its stuck in its "ways". I'm sure the selective VAR treatment and televising dross like Villa vs Middlesborough is what people want to see.

What a disgrace Souness is for calling for replays to be scrapped ; he more than anyone ought to know how much smaller clubs rely on the revenue from those replays and how much its entrenched in the tradition of the FA Cup.

An FA cup replay can be massively beneficial to a club down the pyramid, Simon is right... do the job in 90min then no need for a replay to mess up your prem fixture list and worry about tiredness. Always foreign managers who moan over this as if its some excuse
