The Great Phil foden vanished again, 2 times cross where played into the box and a normal wide player i.e. rashford or sterling would have been at the back post for a tap, but where was foden, invading jude and kane space in the middle of the box so no one at the back post from the crosses to tap in a easy 2 goals at least.

Foden is a Pep system player anywhere else he flops, that is the issue England want to play like Real Madrid where its fluid and everyone moves around but most of the England players are use to rigged systems and not going out and actually playing football. Bellingham looked fluid on the ball whereas the others looked like they where waiting for the ball then moving. Kane can NOT play the pressing role he is not quick enough.

No surprises there. When has Foden ever showed up for England? He was overhyped in the last world cup only for the maligned Rashford to steal the show with 3 goals from just one start, more than the British media darling Harry Kane who played every single minute. Kane was also overhyped before the last Euro, only for Raheem Sterling to be the actual hero for England. Funny enough England's best performers in their last 2 big tournaments were all dropped when their experience would have been very key from the bench. Let's see how far they go without them.

Foden has only ever played in a Guardiola-style possession-based system focussed on controlling the game. Southgate’s style is opposite - he is not interested in controlling the game - he’s okay with giving the opposition the control and possession. Foden has never learned to adapt to Southgate’s system. I thought this even before the Tournament - play Palmer instead of Foden. Palmer is more adaptable

I want to see Gordon start on the LW next game. I want to see Palmer get minutes too. Bowen, Gallagher did well when they came on. Use the subs even more when it's not working like iemt evidently didn't. Kane and Foden were poor.

Is the problem with Foden that he’s just not that bright? Pep has pretty much shown him where he needs to be in every offensive situation cos Pep is meticulous about positioning. When he has to think for himself, maybe he just can’t do it.

Foden is wired to play in a highly specific system, without Pep's handbook he's lost. Guardiola has made players like him and Sterling look way better than they truly are for many years.

I spoke with my mate before the game and he feared Jude the most.. I told him, Jude is not the problem. We know who he is, our coach knows it, players know it.. and we have enough players to stop him. We can always have a guy shadow him and another guy covering.. I was afraid of Saka. He won this game for you. We dont have good wing backs and with Kostic starting.. he has been injured a lot and he is more of a winger and he is half the player he was. His legs are just gone.. our left side CB is right footed and also a tall guy, playing as a central in a 4 in the back line. All our CBs are.. So nobody with enough pace to cover a guy like Saka. Once Saka got a bit tired and they went into him strong it was ok and England lost that edge.. But I knew, the first half hour we were cooked. For some reason for England and for city against top teams, foden struggles to get on the ball and impose himself when he plays 10 or drifts. Always seems to be always running towards whoever has the ball rather than finding space. I think him staying at city has crippled his development, he doesn't seem to know how to operate in midfield areas and get in the right spaces at the right time. For England to do well he mustn’t start.

Adam Wharton is a great defensive midfielder and a good partner for Rice. If they played in front of a back three, it would allow England to play three attacking midfielders where the have plenty of options while having a solid defensive line up.

Playing Foden wide on the left is tantamount to playing Bellingham wide on the right. It is idiotic! Southgate has to play a 3-4-3 with a Bellingham, Foden, Rice, Gallagher/Mainoo midfield. In such a formation, Rice and Gallagher/Mainoo sits and protects the back three. Going forward, Foden and Bellingham roam behind Kane, with Saka and Gordon providing the attacking penetration from wide. Watkins, Eze, and Palmer can come in as substitutes for Kane, Bellingham, and Foden late in games, and Bowen can come in for Saka. Kane looked very leggy. Why not use all 5 subs and get some fresh legs on? Yes we were solid and serbia werent amazing going forward but you never know, deflected shot and its 1v1 etc. It was great first 30mins and Southgate is almost saying they shouldnt have played that way and should have "conserved" energy. England have a 26 man squad full of quality & Southgate seems too scared to utilize it,his in game management is a joke & he's not pro active. Starting with unfit players is one thing,but not changing them when it's obvious too everyone that they're not performing is criminal,Kane/Foden were non existent & should've been dragged off early in the 2nd half & apart from a few good passes Trent was garbage,why doesn't Southgate learn from our previous failures? I was hoping this time after making some brave & mostly correct decisions in picking his final 26 player squad selection that he might've been more brave with his in game management & some aggressive substitutions to really take the game to our opponents, especially ones like Serbia that we should & could be beating fairly comfortably. If we carry on like this we won't win this tournament & the top teams will push us aside as usual & we'll be on the plane home with nothing too show for our efforts again, we're blessed with top players,but I think we'll probably see the same lineup every game & even when certain players ain't at it they'll not be subed & someone else fresh won't be given a chance to show what they can do,same old nonsense again & although we got the win v Serbia I'm not feeling very confident about our chances on this showing.
