The question of what player is the modern equivalent of Graham Souness was great, it shows how good he was but also what the modern game is missing. For me the mix of athleticism, technique, aggression and individualism were at the absolute sweet spot back 20-25 years ago. Back then you had players who could do what Souness could do: ( Gerrard, Vieira, Keane, Ballack, Totti to name a few off the top of my head ) you had some of the best technical players we have ever seen in (Zidane, Bergkamp, Rui Costa, Ronaldinho to name a few) you had players as fast as anyone today if not faster ( R9, Henry, Cisse, Rommedhal, Kaka, Eto'o to name a few) you had the guys who could run all day ( Makelele, Gerrard, Essien, Gattuso, Cafu, Carlos, to name a few) and you had more world class defenders playing than today.....too many to name - lets just mention Maldini shall we since no one currently in world football currently is anywhere near the level he reached.

I hate whenever this topic comes up, because it turns into everyone bashing everyone else when we should be celebrating greatness, both the greatness of the past and the greatness of today. Souness was one of the absolute best players to ever put a pair of boots on, full stop. I think 80-90% of the great players from the past would be great today, they’d just play differently and adjust. 80-90% of the greats today would be great back then, they’d also play differently and adjust. Some guys from the past couldn’t handle athleticism or the media scrutiny of today, some guys today couldn’t handle the physicality and the shoddy facilities/travel accommodation. But the vast majority of the greats would be great and adjust to the differences. Souness might not play the exact same role today, but he’d be great nonetheless and he’d be a winner.

I wonder if footballers of yesterday sometimes think if only? For the success, pleasure and money they did get then what would they achieve in this day and age. Thats like saying carl lewis could have run 9.58 if he raced usain bolt in 2009. Maybe. But would he find it a doddle. Only someone as arrogant ss souness would say something like that. The conditioning of the modern playerr is a level above those of the mid 80s and so is the technique of the average premier league player. The equivilent today of an 80s player is a top notch non league player. Christ do they think that the players from the 1930s were as good as those from the mid 1960s. Get over yourself and realise that their has been a steady progrssion in the quality of top tier footballers.

He wouldn't be fit enough. I'm not saying he couldn't be fit enough, but football played then compared to now has changed dramatically. Look at the average distance covered in the 70's, which was between 4 - 7 km, and the modern game is between 7 - 12 km. He would also pick up a red card every game he played in the current game. Prime Souness wouldn't work in today's game; he would have to adapt just like modern KDB would if he went back in time to play in the 70's.
