Talnakh is called the ore capital of Russia. The deepest mines in Russia are located here. The mine of the Rocky mine reached a depth of 2056 meters in the fall of 2018! The main enterprises of the city are a processing plant and the largest mines in the country "Oktyabrsky", "Rocky", "Taimyrsky", "Komsomolsky" and "Mayak".
In the language of the indigenous people of Taimyr, Dolgan, "talnakh" means "ban" - in the past, this place was considered bad, lost. Like most cities, he got his name from the name of the nearest river. The water in the Talnakh River is not suitable for drinking due to the high content of heavy metals. Although in some sources the word Talnakh is translated less negatively - "a river with ice".
Talnakh owes its birth to the discovery of a deposit of copper-nickel ores. Currently, the Talnakh mines are the main raw material base of Norilsk Nickel. The appearance of the Talnakh mines saved the Norilsk factories from closure, since by the time of the opening of the Talnakh deposit, all the Norilsk deposits were close to the exhaustion of the raw material base.
The harsh subarctic continental climate of Talnakh is primarily due to its comparative remoteness from the sea coast and the fact that it is located 3 ° north of the Arctic Circle.
Before the merger with Norilsk, Talnakh was the northernmost city in Russia (69.491660 sq.s.) with a population of more than 20,000 people. Now this status has passed to Dudinka (69.404172). In Russia, there are settlements located to the north, but on the recommendation of the UN, the status of a city is assigned to a settlement with a population of 20,000 people.

The average annual air temperature for a long-term period at the Talnakh weather station is -9.4 °C, and the average air temperature of the cold period (September - May) for Talnakh is -18.4 °C. Great contrast of winter and summer temperatures. Thus, the absolute maximum air temperature at the Talnakh weather station is +32.6 ° C, the absolute minimum air temperature is -54.2 ° C. The amplitude of the maximum temperatures reaches almost 90 ° C. A sharp change in temperatures during the day in most cases depends on the change of air masses.
The complex and rugged terrain with large elevation differences creates conditions for the existence of a large number of climatic zones on a small area. Often, observation posts located in the neighborhood record completely incomparable values of air temperature, wind strength and direction, power and density of snow cover. Unlike Norilsk, tall trees grow on the territory of Talnakh.
The fifth microdistrict of Talnakh is located on a cliff and is 48 meters above the main part of the district. From the observation deck of the 5th microdistrict, there is a beautiful view of tens of kilometers.
The largest underground mines in Russia operate on the territory of Talnakh, which develop the Oktyabrskoye and Talnakhskoye fields:
Mayak (Talnakh's first mine, opened in 1965);
Komsomolsky (operating since 1971, depth 722 m);
Oktyabrsky (the largest mine of the NPR, has been operating since 1974, the depth is about 1200 m);
"Taimyrsky" (opened in 1982, depth about 1500 m);
"Rocky" (built since 1986, the first launch complex has been operating since 2004; in the fall of 2018, a depth of 2056 m was reached - it became the deepest in Russia and Eurasia).
Ores containing nickel, copper, platinum, gold, cobalt, palladium and other rare components are mined in Talnakh. The total length of Talnakh's workings exceeds 450 km.
The "Prominent" quarry
In Talnakh, ore was previously mined in an open-pit manner. There is a Prominent quarry right in the city. Copper ore was mined here. They say that at the bottom of the quarry you can find stones with copper veins. Now the quarry is heavily littered.
A favorite place for outdoor recreation for residents of Talnakh is the Red stones gorge. Despite the large number of vacationers, it is not uncommon to meet a brown bear here.
An interesting fact is that on the territory of Talnakh the most expensive apartments in the Norilsk industrial district. Apparently, this indicates that a lot of people have recently been striving to work at the Talnakh mines.
