Talyllyn Railway

Күн бұрын

By popular demand, one of the worlds most favourite Steam Locomotives, Dolgoch. Affectionately known as 'The Old Lady', we're giving you an exclusive trip aboard this famous locomotive for a full, interrupted journey on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales.
The Talyllyn Railway is the Worlds First Preserved Railway rescued by volunteers in 1951.
Many viewers may recognise key features of our journey as the Talyllyn was the basis for the 'Skarloey Railway' in the Rev W Awdrys Railway Series stories, the basis for the Thomas & Friends TV Series. 'Dolgoch' became world famous after being included in the books, and TV Series as 'Rheneas'.
The Talyllyn journey begins at Tywyn Wharf, by the coast and climbs into the mountains immediately out of the Station. Keep a watchful look out for the Engine Sheds at Tywyn Pendre as the town is left behind and the wide open spaces and mountains of Snowdonia open up in front of us.
After a brief stop for water, our journey continues through stunning scenery to Abergynolwyn. Up until 1976, this was the end of the line for Passenger Trains. The Railway was extended over the former 'freight only' extension to the Quarries of Bryneglwys, which was the reason for the Talyllyn Railways existence - to carry slate from the Welsh Mountains to be transhipped around the world.
We steam on through stunning scenery as spectacular views continue around every corner arriving above the uniquely placed Nant Gwernol Station, high above the ravines of Nant Gwernol below.

After looking it up, I've found that this is one of the oldest operational locomotives in the world, having been built in 1866. For reference, the current record holder is an Indian locomotive built in 1855.

@@TheAutisticCapricorn811 The record is a tie between two sister locomotives, _Fairy Queen_ and _Express,_ officially known as East India Railways No. 22 and 21, respectively. They are broad-gauge 2-2-2 tank locomotives. Despite the numbering, there's some debate over which one actually came first. Fairy Queen is currently owned by the Rewari Railway Heritage Museum, while I'm not sure about the other locomotive.

It sho' is, considering it's been in service for over 100 years prior. And the fact that the Skarloey books of the _Railway Series_ are based off this exact equivalent in real life, is what makes it astounding as ever. I can't say there has been a lot of good things happening there in Wales, but I can say that it's a U.K. country that's filled with a lot of railways that make you want to travel and go visit them with your friends and families.

I’m not even into trains as such………………and this is just MAGNIFICENT. I just need to qualify that opening line. When I say I’m not into trains. I don’t dislike them or anything. I just never got the train bug…….that some people do. I put it down to the fact that I grew up in inner city, local authority care. Never had a toy train as a kid and so, didn’t get to play with anything train related. What a great story the resurrection of the Talyllyn railway is. Just goes to show what a group of people with vision, determination and sheer hard graft. Can collectively achieve when they put their minds to it. I salute you all……………..I love your railway and everything about it. Great video too……………..a big THANK YOU

Wuul my friends-- "Nae Yoov Dunnit!" This fine Viddy has brought a happy tear to this old railroaders eye! Whilst recently perusing KZfaq for more interesting NG Steam viddies, this one was found. It was quite a surprise & gift for me, because it was almost exactly 20 years ago I was on an incredible 2 week holiday exploring steam NG RR's in England & Wales. On 8 Sept 2000, I had the distinct delight, honour & privilege, of having a 'Full RT' Footplate Pass aboard that fine 'Old Lady' "Dolgoch"!! Her Driver was Mike Green, and her Fireman was Len (?) (a TR Volunteer & Eurostar Driver!), and along with myself (an Amtrak Driver from Colorado) what fun we had swapping tales as we merrily steamed along, thoroughly enjoying the little Lokey and the wondrous, enchanting, & spell-weaving Talyllyn Ry!! It appears nothing much has changed on the TR. Back then Dolgoch was attractive in a nice 'Apple Green' livery, and now every bit as attractive in the 'Burgundy' (?) flavor!! The fine little Lokey still seems to cheerfully steam along, at times even 'chuckling' to herself-- what a treat! Those memories for me have always been an unforgettable golden treasure, which have now been rekindled anew through this wonderful viddy. Many Thanks to all involved-- especially the 'Old Lady', Long May She Steam!!

America is somewhat bigger, so it's not surprising. You might take a look at the Brecon Mountain Railway in South Wales - modelled on the Maine 2 foot lines - although the passenger cars are smaller, the caboose is a nigh-on perfect replica of a Rangeley Lakes model. Soon there will be a #24 2-6-2 live streamer as well.

Amazing to think this engine was built in 1866.

This brings back vivid memories of the 1970s, when I spent 5 happy student summers on the seasonal staff as a blockman, with occasional turns as a guard as a treat. Long days at Brynglas, Quarry, Aber or Pendre - great times indeed! I wonder how many of the old gang are still there? Now that I am finally retired, it makes me think I must get involved again next year, Covid and my old bones permitting!

Interesting that this line utilizes a shuttling means of going either direction without needing to turn the engine around, and the headlamp is easily switched from one end of the locomotive to the other. Nice, restful scenery the whole distance, and not even drizzling or windy on this particular day!

That goes all the way back to the original running style of the railway, when only one locomotive was running at any time.

Beautiful and relaxing video, the only problem was it was too relaxing and I nodded off about 20 Minutes in. Never mind it will give me an excuse to watch again.

The Talyllyn Railway is in it's heyday. It's in much better shape now than it ever was in earlier decades. Money earned gets re-invested in infrastructure. The track materials used now are considerably better than the second-hand stuff we used even as recently as the 1980s. The last contract loco overhaul on 3 a couple of years ago cost £185,000.
