Tama S.L.P. Snare Shootout with Rudi

I made this video for #Tama to post on their socials - reposting it here too, in case anyone missed it! Quick lil' shootout featuring a variety of snares from the S.L.P. line that Tama makes.
There're are a BUNCH of other snares in the S.L.P. line - these 6 just happen to be the 6 that I own. I do also have an SLP Dynamic Bronze, but since Tama recently discontinued it I chose not to include it. Only wanted to feature SLP snares that are currently available. That doesn't mean I won't use the Dynamic Bronze in future videos (it's a great snare!), it just didn't make senes to include it here.
The 6 snares in this video are (in order)...
14x6.5 SLP Sonic Stainless Steel
14x6.5 SLP Bold Spotted Gum
14x6.5 SLP G-Walnut
14x6.5 SLP Black Brass (with upgraded top hoop)
14x6.5 SLP Dynamic Kapur
13x7 SLP G-Maple
I used a coated #Evans G2 on top & a SnareSide300 on bottom for ALL snares, with no more than a half-piece of #Meinl Drum Honey. Didn't tune them to anything specific, really - just to whatever I felt sounded natural / best for each specific snare. I think my personal favorite ended up being the Dynamic Kapur (!). Which one's your favorite (genuinely curious!)?
To read more about any one of these snares, or learn more about all the other SLP snares, click the link below!
www.tama.com/u...
The drum part / backing audio is a loop that I made from a part off the new Intronaut album, 'Fluid Existential Inversions' (the song "Tripolar", specifically). Jammed the beat on each snare & then edited them together!
'Fluid Existential Inversions' is now available for purchase & streaming on all platforms (via Metalblade Records). If you haven't already, please check it out!
Mixed this one myself - just tried to keep it natural & relatively unprocessed. Minimal EQ on the snare, room mic's a bit louder than usual.
I proudly endorse Tama Drums, Meinl Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Tama Drumsticks, Trick Pedals, Vratim Drumshoes, Reflexx Practice Pads, Audient, 64 In-Ears, Gator Cases, OnTrigger, & 2Box

That Black Brass 😤 Spanks so hard. Probably my favorite sound out of the bunch, next to the G-Maple which has that poppy resonance sound that Navene Koperweis doesn’t get enough of. Lol.

Going with the G-Walnut, It sounded really "fast" to me which I like and has less drone/sustain. I did really like the sound of the Kapur because it sounded more traditional to me and the Maple sounded great but not for every application. Thank you for the listen.

Keep in mind that G-maple was tuned much higher than the rest, which naturally makes it come across as less versatile.

G-maple is the one for me. I guess most wont go for the same sound as me but the first "difficult to play" song i learned was DT's a change of seasons and the snare on that song sounds borderline piccolo. I also like playing Latin jazz fusion so, there it is. Should perhaps mention that the G-Maple sounds good in low tuning as well but really shines in the mid to high tuning. Edit: Spelling.

@@Eric_Cartman83 The Starphonics are incredible instruments but so are the SLP's. Since I posted this comment I now have 5 SLP's and 4 Starphonic snares. The Starphonics are Japanese made and all come with the special quick release lugs. The SLP's vary a lot more but are still wonderful. The SLP 14x7" Zebrawood G-Maple and the 14x7 Starphonic Copper are my favourites of the individual ranges! Cheers

I have the g bubinga, dynamic bronze, black brass, and just got the sonic stainless steel. The stainless steel is by far my favorite, and then the black brass, followed by the dynamic bronze, and then g bubinga all in order but I love them all. The g bubinga is an amazing snare I just prefer metal drums over wood. I will say the black brass in this video with the diecast hoops sounds the best tho but in person straight how it comes, the sonic stainless steel is my favorite snare drum.

The Dynamic Kapur was the best, for me. It has a nice controlled resonance, and it rings with a lower tone that blends nicely with the music. My next favorite is the G-Walnut, and third favorite would be the Sonic Stainless Steel. All three of those drums sound fantastic. The ringing tone of the Black Brass was a bit too brash for me... not quite unpleasant, but a bit too punchy and "in your face." Same with the Bold Spotted Gum. The G-Maple sounds great, but it's a bit too tight and controlled for my taste.

I have the G Maple and the thing is it's super versatile. A lot of people tune it high because it's marketed to the Pop/gospel/R&B crowd. And of course it excels at that. But it actually also tunes down really well while still staying crispy and articulate, particularly with Puresound Twisted snares. It's a phenomenal drum that does a lot of things extremely well, especially for a sub $400 snare.

@1dudecrush
@1dudecrush 4 жыл бұрын
Honest question Rüdi, not tryna hate...but like...why the hell do you hit your snare head 4/5 of the way up on the head? The sweet spot of a drum is for sure just a tad bit off center (like an inch or so when it's a snare), and you're wayyyyy off of that. Why? Why not alter your setup to hit a different spot?
