Tamiya Konghead & Land Rover Defender CC-01 on Muddy Bank!

I took my Tamiya Konghead G6-01 6x6 truck for a run with my friend Rob's Land Rover Defender 90 CC-01 on a very steep and muddy bank, up to 45 degrees in places. It was remarkable how versatile the Konghead was, being able to tackle the terrain at crawling speed as well as flat out! The truck gets awesome grip from the 6 wheel drive, even though the diffs are not locked! The 13.5 turn brushless motor also provided plenty of torque at very low speeds. The CC-01 Defender 90 ran well with it's diffs locked, but as you will see - it needed a little helping hand from the Konghead, mainly due to the lack of grip from the standard kit CC-01 tyres - I'm sure they are destined for the bin very soon!
Many thanks for the continued support my friends!

Too right, John! The stock Landie tyres don't have a deep enough tread pattern for real off-roading - easily fixed though. However, as you say, it is a beautifully reproduced kit and at least the stock tyres have the correct scale look. The lights are so cool, and are included in the Tamiya CC-01 kit. Your comments are always appreciated my friend - have a great weekend! :))

Hi Sean! Yeah, with the 13.5T brushless motor the Kong is pretty quick - it would be even faster with the bigger 20 tooth pinion, but I like the fact that it can still crawl a little easier with the stock 18 tooth. And man, I tell you anything comes down that hill FAST!!! Gravity is our friend! :D

Oh Wow, Mark. Would have bet my money on the locked diffs but it was cool to see a Monster Truck beating a trail truck on the trails 🙂 Need to check out Rob’s build to see which tires the Defender came with. Can’t remember. All I know is that the tires my CC-01 (Landfreeder) came with where more for the road than the trails. Great footage of the Kong jumping too.

Thanks , Mikael - yeah, I was very surprised by the capabilities of the Monster Truck too - but I guess 6WD with fat tyres versus 4WD with road tyres wins in the end! I think the Landfreeder tyres and Land Rover tyres are made of hard plastic, not soft rubber! Glad you enjoyed it my friend! :))

Great, the Konghead is a fantastic kit to build. When it's done, it really is a go-anywhere truck, you will have a blast running on any terrain! The metal bearings are a good investment, although mine cost about £20, it's something not to worry about in the future. I didn't bother with the rear wheel steering, it's very twitchy at speed with that option. It is a little slow with the stock motor though, I fitted a 13.5T sensored brushless to the standard TBLE02 ESC. I have videos of the build and the brushless motor fitting, if you are interested. Other than that, just have fun with it! :)

That was an interesting comparison! I would have thought the dedicated crawler would have beat the G6-01 on that hill, but probably the extra axle did its magic with this! Makes me think, I wonder how the G6-01 will do with locked differentials? Or maybe just the centre axle locked, shouldn't affect cornering that much, eh? I'm still just playing with ideas in my mind, ha ha! I love going back and watching these old videos over and over, they're great, Mark!
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Mads, great that you are keeping the views going on the old vids! Yeah, the extra traction of the G6-01 won the day on this occasion! It's pretty good as you say, with 6 wheels digging in. I have seen these rigs converted to crawlers with all diffs locked, they seem pretty capable, too. It still steers OK, especially with the rear servo option. It's good to think these things over before starting a project, I sure do! All the best, mate! :-)

What a fun video - somehow, despite not having read the description yet, I could tell that the CC-01 was fitted with locked diffs by the measured and consistent way in which the wheels were spinning. The Konghead´s spectacularly competent as a crawler, and it´s superb at attacking the hill at speed. My favourite shots of the entire vid were those showing it flying back down the hill - I could practically feel the camera flinching at one point : )
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC 5 жыл бұрын
Cheers my friend! Somehow I might have guessed that "eagle eye Del" would be able to tell if the diffs were locked! Glad you enjoyed the faster bits (and so did I) and I bet you also guessed that we hit that camera full-on a couple of times (well, Rob did, but I'm still talking to him!!!). At one point, on a flat-out descent, the Konghead almost ended up at the bottom of the stream - it really was that close! Thanks for the great comment, and as always I hope you are having a fine weekend! :-)

@@MarkBryanRC Ha ha! It´s hard to blame anyone for hitting the camera when we all know how fine the gap is between "Great shot!" and "Sorry, mate - is it still recording?". The Konghead looks astonishingly sure-footed at speed in this video - obviously most of this is due to Rob´s driving talent, but at least some credit must go to Tamiya : )

Hehe - love that comment - "Great shot!" and "Sorry, mate - is it still recording?". We must al have been there! The Konghead is an enigma, sometimes it does EXACTLY what you input on the controller - other times it seems to have a mind of it's own! Yeah go Konghead! The Land Rover did look very nice though and like you say it's the crappy tyres from the kit that let it down. Those Fastrax Kong wheels and tyres I had on the Landfreeder were really good and there was a Land Rover type of wheel you could get but I was just looking and I'm not sure if you can still get them. Anyway nice video mate. Shows what 6WD does for a bit of extra traction because those Lunchbox tyres aren't very grippy either. They have got a nice big contact area though which helps. Konghead defo on the list for a future build. You got anything planned for the weekend? I'm mainly building some shelving for my new hobby room. I have got the desk in and I am in here now typing this! Still work to do but nearly there. Went for an RC session with Ric just now. All very nice and no breakdowns. Ric has made a truck out of his TT-02 buggy which is cool. I've just got some nice beer from the brewery to drink while having a little tinker. Hope you have some beer on the go too :-)

Very nice, I think the defender just needs better tyres, and the Konghead might benefit from a locked diff or 2, if you want to use it for this sort of slipper incline crawling more. www.anythingrc.co.uk/

Thanks bud, you are correct, methinks! But I will keep the Konghead with open diffs because I enjoy the high-speed capabilities too! Thanks for the comment and have a great weekend! :))

@@MarkBryanRC Fair enough, certainly for the speed the konghead will be happier with open diffs. How does it handle at high speed? With those 4 rear wheels?

Hi mate - the Kong handles very well at speed, but I didn't fit the rear-wheel steering option, so turning circle could be better (it helps if you drift it into a turn at high speed!). So if you locked the diffs, because of those 4 rear wheels, I fear turning would be very difficult. With the rear steering, it might be a good option! :-)

Yes, I love the Konghead too, such a great truck - but the CC-01 is also a great Tamiya kit! Cheers! :-)
