After some 25 years and stored in various lofts I dig out my old 1989 Tamiya Porsche 959 and see if it will run once again.

Now I'm 40 and pretty much dead inside ie cannot get exited about much! Looking back over these old Tamiya Rc cars has really put a smile on my face and sent me back in time 30yrs. That much so I just bought myself a Hotshot and my son Age 7 a Grasshopper (was my first car) Hopefully it will give him the same memories I had as a child, although sadly and realistically they will be aimed more towards the PS4 :-( but heres hoping. Great you can still buy some and build them. Good vid. My mate also had the 959 and I had a Bigwig both with the Technigold.

+Flibbertigibbet Nice to hear mate. Yes these were big boys toys and so sort after when we were teenagers. Only the rich kids got one. Good times ahead with the Grasshopper. Your boys about the right age to enjoy it with you.

oh man, i was literally sat here at 3am and thinking about beatties in southgate and looking at the tamiya 959 when i was a kid so searched it on youtube and this video came up and you went to the same shop, amazing. such a shame its gone. I was only about 11 then but dreamt of owning it.

Same experience I had recently with my 19 year old Skyline with Ta02W 4wd chassis . I think i got it in 1999 or 2000. Sadly I Dont have the original Nismo Clarion body. It was already an old chassis then. Same mechanical speed control . 19 years had to pass before I fit a 6$ ESC on it . still runs like a champ. I had broken plastic hex adapters , which i replaced with aluminum ( $1 on ebay ) . Fixed some broken plastic parts with epoxy and still runs like a champ. P.S. My ni-cd battery charged and gave me something like 30 seconds of power, enough to check servo and motor . got a new one. Im hooked again

Thanks for this upload. Brings back memories :) I live in Ireland but was lucky enough to grow up in Hemel Hempstead where that magazine came from :) RiKo or Richard Kohnstam was the main tamiya dealer in the UK and he had a shop in the Hemel old town. parts were easy to come by. I have a few old models sitting in my parents. I still have all of the manuals too. I need to do some digging!

I'm 47 seconds in and I'm freaked out! I was in junior school in the mid 80's and one of the kids brought in a Hornet on the last day of term!! I was blown away by the speed of the thing, it was the first time I had seen one and I wanted one so bad, there was no way on earth I would be getting one of them for Christmas, thanks a lot Santa!!!!!!

Roots 7 I am with you on that. The first time I saw a Hornet power sliding around the school playground I wanted one also. Took a few years LOL.

Same story for me and many others it seems. A kid brought a Hornet to school and I was hooked. Ended up buying one a few years later after much saving and ran it 'til it wore away! I've still got the Beatties bag and few spares. I've been back into RC for the last few years. Things have changed a lot now what with brushless motors and Lipo batteries. I just built my first Tamiya since the '80s too - "Heavy Dump Truck GF01" for my son of course ;-). Great nostalgic video.

Great video fred! My first experience of tamiya was in high school when one of my mates showed me his tamiya hornet too. It was so fast I was blown away and hooked. Unfortunately I sold my first tamiya which was the avante but luckily my brother kept his 2nd tamiya from when he was a kid which was the clod buster. He's just give it to me recently :) . It's 25 years old or there abouts and is still running strong. Loved how you rediscovered your porsche 959 and got it up and running again.

Love this video. It virtually is identical to my life as well. I still have my Tamiya 959. I doubt I will ever part with it either. Mine is also quite beat up. I think I broke and replaced the headlight bracket numerous times due to head on collisions. Thanks for the video, it is perfect. On a side note I still am fascinated by Porsche and finally purchased a 2005 911. Fabulous car!

+rich longwith Thanks for this comment. After being called "the most boring person ever" by the other bloke I was beginning to wonder. Yes I seem to recall my headlights going on about the 3rd frontal impact. I was also into Porsches at the time and about a year after I had this kit I bought an early 944 which I ran for a few years.

I wanted this model so bad as a kid, my dad took me to the model shop to get a car I asked for the 959 the model shop guy put my dad off saying it would be to fast for me, I was so Pissed off and still to this day. In the end we got a vennesa lunch box and he painted it like the A Team van.
@CB-RADIO-UK5 жыл бұрын
It was darn fast with the Goldseal motor and the three speed controller. I would say it went around 30-40 mph so very easy to crash and roll it.
@meshtonguerunning3 жыл бұрын
I had a very similar experience at the hobby shop. The only good thing was at age 12 I had a paper route and nothing else to blow my money on so even though the owner of the shop said it would be too much for me to control, it was my money that I had saved up a year for and I bought it anyway. He was right, it was way too fast for a 12 year old to handle but I loved everything about and still have it in a bag in the basement. I may have to pull mine out now after watching this video.
@vx90137 жыл бұрын
Good memories. I used to own a Hornet and a Monster Beetle but knew a guy who had a Celica with a Technigold motor. I was mad jealous of it as it was a speed demon compared to my cars lol. Also, some rich kid in a fancy estate I knew from school had a Bullhead, that thing was huge lol.
@CB-RADIO-UK7 жыл бұрын
Yes the rich kids had all the best toys. I would have loved my 959 as a child :-)

You know when mine went up in smoke, prob around 1990 I did go back to Beatties to enquire for another and I think it was over £50 then. I bought another cheaper Tamiya motor instead. It was never as quick though. ;-(

Great video really enjoyed it. One of my best friends had one of these it was very fast but we found it kept rolling over at speed, but if you ran it with out the body on never did. It was a good RC car. some of my friend used it, for racing I remember, it was not stabile in higher speeds, but in the low speed turning was very good.... good RC, have fun with it
@CB-RADIO-UK9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes your quite correct about the high speed stability. I used to run it with the wheels slightly turned in to help it track straight at speed but could only run short bursts. You could also remove the prop shaft and have a rear wheel drive drifter.

I lived the same experience...but in Milan. Tamiya was just a world of dreams. I dreamt for long Egress or Astute. I remember hours spent on the catalogue or in front of Movo an historical model shop that was a kind of Mecca.

+Pasquale Cirulli Glad it was not just me dreaming as a boy all those years ago ;-)
@joecachia25 жыл бұрын
Yep, Little Malta here. In the 80's RC was a thing for the well-off , and you could only get things from 1 or 2 shops. A 12 year old with NO money of his own.... Now I'm 45 with a 6 year old ... and there's the internet ... a different problem now lol
@acereport89396 жыл бұрын
Tamiya still makes catalogs. I got one from the owner of my local hobby shop a couple of years ago, although, it's not as complete as yours. It only had the RC cars that were currently available at the time (2015). Those AA batteries were used to power the receiver and servos. We stopped using them when electronic speed controls became available as they could use the the cars battery to power the electronics with out the need for AA batteries.
@CB-RADIO-UK6 жыл бұрын
Yes that makes sense on the batteries. The prob with the mechanical speed controllers is that they would lock when the main battery became low, hence the need for their own power supply.

Haha, Beaties in Southgate was my local too :) I used to pour over the Beaties Tamiya catalogue in junior school and by the late '80s in secondary school I had got a Tamiya Terra Scorcher. By then Red Baron on the Hertford Road was the place to go. It's still a hobby shop now, but nowhere near as car-orientated as it was then.
@CB-RADIO-UK8 жыл бұрын
+Blame Radio Shack LOL small world. When I was a kid I used to pester my dad to take me. When he finally gave in he would moan the whole trip as we had to park down some side road miles away to go to the shop.
@retroshack29608 жыл бұрын
+fredintheshed1 I take back what I said about Red Baron still going (most recently called "HobbyStores"). It has closed completely now. The internet has closed the high street shops but opened up the availability of information and buying obscure parts second hand etc. Can't decide which is better...I guess it's just the way everything is going now, not just RC cars... By the way I have now uploaded a few videos of my vintage RC restoration project, a 1980 Tamiya Holiday Buggy

fredintheshed1 give it a full recondition and put some modern electrics and bearings in it if you want to drive it. It'll make a world of difference. Keep the old electrics tho as they add to its collectibility and rarity. Just drive gently the plastics do tend to become brittle as the cars age but it's a testimony to tamiyas quality that many of these old cars work after so many years. The 959 is one of their classics and is very desirable as a collectors piece. Don't sell it but if you do sell it to me as I'll look after it well
