----------------------
As shown in the video, to install a full set of ball bearings in your Tamiya TT-02B you will need 16 ball bearings in total: 4 x 1280 (size 8 x 12 x 3,5) and 12 x 1150 (size 5 x 11 x 4). The 4 x 1280 bearings are for the differentials, the center outdrives use 4 x 1150 bearings and the wheel axles use the remaining 8 x 1150 bearings.
In this video I used a set of Tamiya TT-01E Metal Shielded Ball Bearings. It includes an additional 4 x 850 sized ball bearings not used for the TT-02B but you can of course use other packages, like full sets for the TT-01, TT-02B and DF-02 (please note that the TT-02 Touring Car bearing sets does NOT include the right amount and sizes for the TT-02B and that certain sets for the DF-02 only includes the bearings for the wheel axles).
You can of course also buy the 1280 and 1150 bearings separately, and mix rubber sealed bearings (for off road use) and metal sealed bearings (for minimum friction) as you please.
'Phase 1' of this series will include a variety of essential upgrades and options, batteries, motors and a couple of aluminium hop-ups. This series will focus on the top speed and the TT-02B as an on road speed test car.

Facepalm! I'm glad I'm just casually watching this. I've already perform a ball bearing upgrade on my TT02 chassis over a year ago but while watching this, I relaized I forgot to swap those brown bearings around the front/rear diff housing! And I just did my rebuild yesterday after a clean and didn't know about the back treading tip until now. Well, from here on out I'll be adding that to my maintence skill set! This will for sure prolong the life of parts and especially tub bodies like these! I believe I've already overtightened/stripped a few holes out already. I heard a trick to fixing those is to fill the holes with super glue I think it was and to rethread the hole afterward.

Hi bro! Yeah, done a few re-theads with glue too. The best way is to avoid stripping the threads though, with back-threading during maintenance/rebuilds/upgrades.

Great install video Mikael, nicely presented!👍😊 With so many rc’s nowadays coming with ball bearings, I wish Tamiya would start including them as standard.

Very nice. The bushings didn't look that bad, only a bit of gray grease around them... But definitely better with bearings!

Would love to know what the differences it makes in run time, acceleration, top speed. I have a 2nd hand dual ridge, just waiting for my brushless motor to arrive, 😁 will check if it’s ball raced when I take it apart. Quality vid as always btw 👌 looking forward to see the blue bits go on, will be watching those vids ! fitted a metal blue anodised propshaft to mine. 🤪

Hi John! Sounds like you got a nice TT-02B project too. It will be too difficult to measure and compare complete run times and ball bearings doesn’t do much to the top speed and acceleration with these low turn brushless motors. The benefit is somewhere else. They will put less stress to the motor (due to smoother running and less friction) and they will be much much more durable and minimize wear and tear to parts. But will do some top speed and acceleration measurements along the way any way 🙂

Try search "cageman bearing" here on KZfaq, this guy has done some pretty thorough comparisons, really nice videos, worth watching.

I cannot fathom why, in 2021, Tamiya still includes those plastic bushings in any of their kits. The cost savings can't be that high...BB kits only cost the consumer $15-$20...so they can't cost tamiya more than $5 to include them in a kit. Sometimes I wonder if tamiya survives off of the nostalgia, or the kit building experience...because many of their models, after you include the cost of a basic radio/servo/battery perform lower than similarly priced RTR models. Granted, some of their models clearly aren't meant for performance...like a lunchbox or grasshopper. But the TT02b isn't that different in form than say, a redcat tornado...a new one of those in brushless form costs about the same as a TT02b kit once built and the redcat can run circles around the TT02b. The other choice they made is the brushed/brushless ESC...that only works with sensored motors. I feel like they should offer some models with a more capable brushed ESC, and others with a brushless esc that can run sensorless. And no ESC meant for lipo should be coming with tamiya style plugs!!!

Hi! Ha ha, yeah, I agree, Tamiya definitely have some issues: insisting on bushings, LiFe and NiMH batteries and sensored motors. … With the two new buggy releases, the TD4 and TD2, it seems like Tamiya themselves are aware of the problem of the TT-02B - which, yes, is a pretty much standard bathtub 4WD design that a lot of other companies produce for less money. There are some benefits with paying a little extra for Tamiya though: quality control and quality plastic, assembly kits with the best instructions, spare part supply and some very well designed and very Tamiya’ish bodies. . But yes, I think the TD2 and TD4 will be better in terms of the uniqueness of fun Tamiya runners that nobody else make.
