Kathie says…I began using fresh pineapple for years. The first time I tried it, I never went back to the canned pineapple. I use to also add whole pecans with the pineapple and cherries…that will knock your socks off it is so good! I leave them out now because of my diverticulosis, but instead of the pecans, I put a couple drops of pecan OIL into the batter…and it works!! It is delicious. My recipe is over 90 years old..instead of giving the oven temperature, it says “bake in a moderate oven”. I bake it in a 12” skillet. We pick on that cake every time we walk past it until it is gone! I bet you do too!!

I also use pecans. I don't like that kind of cherry, so pecan halves go into the void. This was my husband's favorite cake. This looks so good, I have to try Tammy's recipe.

This brought back such wonderful memories...my best friend Marcy and I would make this when were about 11 or so. Mom had an old beat up pan that looked as tho it had been through the war...we would use a JIFFY yellow cake mix, the pineapple, tons of butter and brown sugar and cherries. We would eat the whole cake! Good memories...

The first dessert I ever made for my late Husband was a German Chocolate layer cake (which he told me was his favorite) while we were still dating and it cracked right in the middle all the way down through both layers and looked like a volcano that had already erupted. It still tasted delicious though, actually probably even more so than if it hadn't fallen apart because a lot of the icing ran down through it willy nilly as well but boy was it a mess! LOL! You wouldn't believe some of the stuff that poor man ate as I was learning how to cook. But he ate everything I sat in front of him with a big smile on his face like it was the best thing he'd ever had and he never once complained. 😀

This is my favorite dessert. My mom made them when w were growing up back in 40s and 50s also. I have made it for years myself . I donot like cake mix cooking from scratch is so worth the time

My mop used to make this with a cake mix and substituted the water with the pineapple juice. It was delish yours Looks fabulous in comparison. Have to try it

Oh Tammy, Pineapple upside down cake has always been one of my favorites and you've really outdone yourself on this one it looks absolutely Heavenly! I'm definitely going to be giving it a whirl ASAP! You look really beautiful by the way, I love your hair and glasses. This looks wonderful. My mother made a delicious pineapple upside down cake and I’ve been using her recipe and trying to duplicate it for 20 or 30 years, and it hasn’t worked! It’s been a mystery. I haven’t given up though, at least not on the type of cake. She kind of fudged around with the recipe a little bit and used canned pineapple and threw in some pineapple juice and it was really hard to do exactly how she did it, but this cake looks like hers and I’m gonna try it. Thanks!

It's a beautiful cake! I always made mine in a cast iron pan too. I used box butter cake mix though and it ALWAYS rose up right out of the pan and made a huge, sticky mess all over the bottom of the oven! It tasted good but I'm switching to your recipe! Thanks for sharing!!

This was my mother's favorite cake, and when we went to her brother's funeral, they had this cake and my mother was so happy. Turned out it was her brother's favorite cake, too. No wonder since it was my grandma's favorite and it was easy so she made it all the time.

i use the pineapple in heavy syrup and add the pineapple juice to my cake mix, and use the marshino cheerys and place pecans standing face up all around the outside of the cake, its 100 percent better

This is my husband’s favorite cake that his mother (who was from Appalachian Kentucky) always made him for his birthday. Today is his birthday, and I’m so glad I found this recipe, he said it looks exactly like his Mom’s and it will be the first time I made it for him in 19 years of marriage, lol. Wish me luck!

@@CollardValleyCooks thank you!! It turned out just right!!! He loves it, and it does look really pretty. I cooked it at 350, (which you said would have it be a little browner) cause he said he wanted it browner, and it took 40 minutes to finish in my oven (every oven is different!) Slid out of the pan perfectly with the butter on the bottom and the spray on the side. He loves his birthday cake! Also, it was really easy to make, and your directions in the printed recipe and seeing the video were spot on!

My mama made me this cake for most of my birthdays growing up, of course we dont make the cake from scratch but delicious all the same, I personally bake mine in a bundt pan and add a bit of juice to the cake mix

My mother always made her pineapple upside down cake in a skillet and from scratch. A box cake is totally different in texture. This is almost a cross between a biscuit and a pound cake. I’ve gotta make one, but I don’t have a skillet.

Hi Tammy! Missed the premiere, but it didn't take long for my crew to make a grocery store run to pick up a couple of fresh pineapples & cherries! Pulled out a couple of big ol' 14-inch cast iron skillets & whipped up a couple of these upside down cakes so we can enjoy seconds! What a wonderful aroma! Haven't had a good pineapple upside down cake in a while but that will change here in a few minutes, for sure! We needed a quick dessert to go along with the grilled burgers this evening! Thanks for another video, y'all!

My crew has enjoyed not only the recipes but the ease with which they come together & have enjoyed learning to cook from watching your videos. I know that when they get out on their own, they'll know how to cook something besides Ramen noodles and fried or scrambled eggs!! LOL Not that there is anything wrong with the squiggly, Ramen noodles or eggs, of course, but a little variety is always great! When I make it I start with the butter/ brown sugar then pineapple rings and cherries then a layer of crushed pineapple followed by the cake batter.

What if one don’t have the self rise flour, I only have regular flour. How much of baking powder should I add to the flour ????

Hi Tammy! What size cast iron skillet are you using? I only have one, and I think it’s either an 8” or 10”. I can’t tell.

10.25" standard skillet. This one was 3" tall but a standard height will work
