These degrees exist in mass among people who are looking to check the box to be promoted to the next level. These are the people who are probably politically connected to the get the promotions anyway, but lacked the credential. It is probably an open secret as many of the people that are the so called gatekeepers posses them as well. Once news of the scam breaks to the general public they will all circle the wagons to protect each other vs. any real outrage and firing. Some possible defenses they will use: 1. Even though employee X had a fake degree, it was not relied upon in the decision to promote 2. Employee X had no idea that XYZ school was a diploma mill and was unknowingly scammed 3. My degree was completed in another country and unfortunately not accepted in the United Sates which is very unfair.
