Hi ! I just subscribed to the channel after watching the video where you talk about all the lenses available for the Z50 (just bougght it for my wife last month) and i totally agree with you, even when I don´t have the adapter yet but Iknow that when it arrives will be interesting to try it with the lens I have. Now you mention around 3:00 to 3:15 min. That the Tamron is actually 600mm equivalent because of the crop factor but is not; the 18-400 is actually a 400 native APSC lens. I tried it with both my old D7200 and D610 and compared it against the Tamron 150-600 G2 and Nikkor 70-300 (the FX, full frame) and realize that both full frame lenses reached the equivalent of 450 mm at only their 300 mm lenght when mounted on the D7200, and the reach of the 18-400 at 400 was actually 400. So it is a real 18-400mm. The other thing you mentioned (at 13:20min.) Is that at 250mm the Tamron is getting better sharpness and it is strange, but is not! because at the far end, all the zoom lenses are worst than at their own mid range. Try to use for example the 28-300mm at 200 and f9 and then do the same at 300mm and you will see a huge difference. That´s because as yu know they say "lenses are like steak, the best its at the center" Great channel and comparison by the way, I am your fan now. And you are much more objective than the overacted Jared Pollin

Measured the dimension of the little Bird (14:07) in fullscreen mode: 3cm at 250mm an 3.8 cm at 400mm. Crop of the lenses: (400/250)^0,5 = ca. 1.25 (square root of 400/250) Object: 3.8/3 = ca. 1.25 So it seems that the 400mm are plausible. (If I calculated right.)

Thanks for the comparison. I own the Tamron 18-400mm and use it on my Nikon D7500. What I have found it that I have to stop it down to F8 to get sharper images. There is lens creep to and the V.C is not very effective. But it is an average all-rounder and compact for the focal range, and of course good value for money.

Appreciate the comparison as I was considering purchasing the Tamron 18 - 400 for a trip to Yellowstone and Glacier NP. I have seen mixed reviews on line for the Tamron 18-400 on the Z50. I am also considering the Nikon 200 - 500 for the reach when photographing wildlife. However, I am concerned about the size and weight of it. Not to mention that nobody has them in stock at this time. I will look into renting the Tamron 18-400 for a weekend to see if it is worthwhile purchasing. The Tamron is about half the price of the 200-500 Nikon but the savings will not matter if it does not provide the reach and clarity I want.

I tried out the Nikon 200-500mm and the Tamron 150-600mm on the Nikon Z50... The Nikon 200-500mm is much better than Tamron 150-600mm, but both lenses are too slow... Consider the Tamron 100-400mm... My opinion is, the Tamron 150-600mm is garbage and the Nikon is too heavy and too bulky.. and focusing with that super slow FTZ mount you can forget. You have to use a DSLR... for such lenses.

I did a same test with the Z50 and a Nikkor 28-300 lens. At full zoom there was no difference in size. Sharpness was the same. I also am amazed with the kit lenses that came with then camera. It also works well with the 200-500mm lens. I am looking at using a 1.4 teleconverter with the 28-300 when I travel. Can't find any info on that combination.

12:04 it's obvious that the focus point is different for tamron and nikon. the 50-250 is on the bird, the 18-400 is on the branches that's why you have difference in details. you can pause and see that the tip of the branches are blurred on the nikon and it's in focus on the tamron

What you are experience are a phenomenon called "focus breathing" or "lens breathing". What it does, is change the focal length of a lens the closer you are to the subject. You can easily test it by simple looking through the viewfinder at a given focal length, while manually changing the focus from infinity to closest focus distance and back again. You will see how the lens will change its field of view. Like it is breathing. Unfortunately, the Tamron seem to suffer from this, while the Z lenses are virtually free from it. Lens breathing are really annoying in video, and the new mirrorless cameras are good video cameras, so Nikon did some work on that for the mirrorless Z lenses. It is mostly visible at closer focus distances, like under 50ft. Over that and I think the Tamron will work fine. Why does a lens focus breath? To make a lens zoom (out/in?), you need to make some lens-elements inside the lens (objective), move away from the film plane. To make a lens focus closer, you must make some lens-elements inside the lens (objective), move closer the film plane. So, you have zoom at long distances end and close focus at close distance.

Thank you for the reply! I did try manual focus (de-focus/re-focus) but it didn't seem to help, I'll have to try the infinity method!. I'll have to pick farther targets for my next test!

Hi, Does the tamron 18-400 work fast on the z50?
@neverenoughtimetotinker8439
@neverenoughtimetotinker8439 3 жыл бұрын
As far as focus speed... its a mixed bag. For instance, I was taking photos of some birds at the beach. First of them resting on a rock out-cropping closer to me (around 60 feet) then as they took off I was trying to get them crossing the dropping sun as they flew farther out. The focus did OK as they moved farther away and I kept zooming out to keep them in frame. But when I moved back to the closer rocks it took quite a bit of time and I found myself hitting manual focus so I could rack focus back which can be a bit of a pain but was much faster than waiting on AF to figure it out. Once the lens is focused in the general range you are fine but going from a close to far focus can be very slow. Switching from subject to subject within the same range is snappy and I had no issues. I am in the middle of fine AF tuning though. It seems at extreme distance its hitting just in front of target. The Z50 just came out with a new firmware that will help keep the settings (it didn't seem to work before).

Well, I think if you fit a dx lens to a crop sensor you must add the crop factor to know the full frame equivalent but when you fit a full frame lens to a crop sensor do not add the corp factor! 😃
@iddeegee
@iddeegee 2 жыл бұрын
no, he's correct all lenses show focal length in 35MM eqv. so one should always add the crop factor to all lenses. The difference between them is in the physical size of the glass and the sensor area they could cover. In other words native DX lenses are usually smaller and lighter than FF lenses. But in most cases you can't use them on FF cameras because of strong vignetting

The Tamron is very sharp and close to the Nikon 50-250mm, I can't see a difference. You have to compare the lenses when the subject has the same size in the frame, and you don't do so! But has very much focal breathing. On 100m distance, you get that 400mm... on 30m it is 300mm on 5 met it is 150mm. The Nikon has very much color fringing and less Sun glaring and the Tamron has chromatic color aberration and sun glaring, which the Nikon doesn't have. The image stabilization of the Tamron is only 2 stops and from the Nikon is around 5 stops. And for Videos the Nikon is silent... And the focus speed for the Nikon without that FTZ mount is fast... and for the Tamron slowly, with the Nikon D7200 the Tamron is faster than the Nikon z50 with the Nikon Z 50 -250mm...
