I had to do my library job on an IBM Selectric typewriter in 1977. We had one Tandy computer at the check out desk. It was amazing how much it simplified the check out process. We had it programmed so it automatically printed an updated list of overdue books at ten am.

This was a very well presented section on BBC's Pebble Mill. Just think of all of the things that could have gone wrong on live television with having 3 clunky 70's computers and doing a demo on one while a program loads from cassette on another... especially with the PET 2001's hit-and-miss chiclet keyboard! This was years before the BBC's 'The Computer Program' and 'Micro Live' - Bravo to the Pebble Mill team!

I was a technician in a college in the early 80's. I used to check the PETS after each word processing class. I once went up to a classroom and one of the screens had a 3 neat boxes of tippex corrector painted on it. Old habits die hard!

My first computer was Tandy TRS-80 Model I, like the one shown in the video here. I learned to do a lot of things with it such as writing programs in BASIC and Z80 assembly language; this is how I learned how computers really worked. This was in a time when the technology was not dumbed down and users were actively encouraged to more the computer.

I remember having to learn printer codes for formatting documents and accessing special characters, and if I wanted to get a directory of a disk, I had to write a little BASIC program to do it. Most systems booted up to a *READY* prompt or flashing cursor and nothing more. Nowadays it's all done for you. Where's the fun in that ?

Oh I need to share this with you, The PET was the first computer I ever used also and the instructor told us (group of two) to type in a three line program which he dictated to us then he said, "Type in RUN", the guy beside me type in "Are You In", I swear my life on this. I wasn't sure my self, but I had a feeling that wasn't what he meant. : -)

The young presenter will be 70 on 3/19/2019. I've always believed biorhythms were a pile of you-know-what, but they were popular in the late 1970's as this was one of a handful of things these computers ran.

problem with the micro computers back then... you could do most everything they did by hand. My first computer was a Vic 20 in 1982. It was mostly a toy. The Commodore 64 was a very useful computer. You could run a small business using one. I remember Compuserve on a 300 baud modem.

Despites being 23 years away from the 21st century at that time, She already said’are you feeling you cannot keep up with the 21th century’ hahaha, Also despite pc’s were in it’s early stage and didn’t get mainstream, she said’ are you feeling your life is heavily controlled by computers’ ,hahahaha. Also despite internet didn’t existed backthen and a network didn’t get mainstream ,she already said that ‘soon you can connect your computer to a banksystem’ I also like how she said’1978 is gonna be the big thing with these compiters’ hahaha because the real computer revolution did begin at 1995. Whooaah i am sooo astonnished about this because it was not untill 1995 pc’s and inter(national)net(work) did get mainstream,And in 2005 banking busineses on pc’s did get finaly mainstream. Thing is backthen, it was all exclusive, only schools, hospitals, company’s,banks, ,students, business man’s did had a pc ,and a network was rarely used by them.I think that atleast only 0,5% of the consummers did had a pc in 1978 .

Hahaha ‘are you feeling you cannot keep up with the 21th century, are feeling that your life is controlled by big computers’ absolutely brilliant how she said that,,, but lady, you got to realize these pc’s you showed were just in it’s early stage and didn’t go mainstream for 18 years to come,it only targetted schools, company’s,students ,business man’s and hospitals,it attrackted only 1% of consummers. I also like how she said’and are computers suspicious to you as to be big computers? Well 1978 may will change that because these are smaller computers getting on the market’ Am suprised that she said all these things because at that time in 1977 the year 2000 was still an whopping 23 years away. Also despite those pc’s were primitive it indeed demanded many company’s and despites a network (the procursor of internet)was only used by the state but even she said that people could soon connect their pc to a phone link system to connect to a bank system to do your bank busineses. Yeah i know we take these systems for grantage now but backthen they were just so futuristic.
