5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Christopher Gibbs, antique dealer and long-term resident of Tangier
"It was welcoming to the artistic and the aesthetical. They felt at home."
6. Various of the Villa Mabrouka, Yves Saint Laurent's house in Tangier
7. Various set ups of Quito Fierro, property agent, talking to local historian Rachel Moyel inside the Villa Mabrouka
8. SOUNDBITE: (French) Quito Fierro, property agent, Majorelle Investments and Christie's International Real Estate
"Villa Mabrouka was an impulse buy at the end of the 90s when Yves St. Laurent decided that he wanted a summer house by the sea. He realised that Tangier was the best place. Winter in Marrakesh, summer in Tangier. As Pierre Berge said - Yves was born on the Mediterranean at Oran in Algeria and Pierre Berge himself was born on the Atlantic on the Ile d'Oleron. So Tangier is the place there the two oceans meet."
9. Wide of Quito Fierro talking to local historian Rachel Moyel inside YSL's house
10. Close of art deco poster
11. Wide of art deco posters and photographs behind YSL's desk
12. Close-up of framed birthday greeting to YSL
13. SOUNDBITE: (French) Rachel Muyal, local historian
" We've had not only fashion designers, but also interior decorators and very important people. They all came to Tangier and bought houses. The most famous was Malcolm Forbes - you don't get a bigger name than that. He bought a place here in Tangier and came to live here. Jean Louis Sherrer came here and Jacques Grange the interior designer. They came each summer as did lots of writers."
14. Various of the the interior of the Villa Mabrouka
15. SOUNDBITE: (French) Quito Fierro, property agent, Majorelle Investments and Christie's International Real Estate
"I think that to come to Tangier you really have to love the spirit of the city which tends to be nostalgic about a past era. Tangier always lives on its past and it is being revived through the Librairie des Colonnes. It's been bought by Pierre Berge and is part of the attempt to bring back a cultural dimension to the city."
16. Various of Tangier city centre (Nouvelle Ville)
17. Various of exteriors of the newly re-opened Librairie des Colonnes
18. SOUNDBITE: (English) Christopher Gibbs, antique dealer and long term resident of Tangier
"The reawakening of the Libraire des Colonnes in to its new elegant disguise with a mashrabiya screen above, the red columns and the wonderful books to read. It's the daddy of the bookshops. There are two other European bookshops but it's the best. It's very exciting for us to have its fresh elegance breezing in. It was 'magic-ed' by the wonderful Pierre Berge."
19. Various of people looking at books inside the Librairie des Colonnes
20. SOUNDBITE: (French) Pierre Berge, owner of the Librairie des Colonnes (and former partner of Yves St Laurent)
"I am very happy to see a bookshop like the Librairie des Colonnes. It is a marvellous place. The aren't many places like it. There aren't any like it in France, maybe in London. It is marvellously done. The architecture, the decoration is lovely. I was very moved when I saw what has been done. I had seen the works going on but it wasn't finished. Today I am very proud that this bookshop exists."
21. Wide of ferry arriving at the Port of Tangier
22. Pan right of the port and town of Tangier
23. Wide of Tangier

1959 in the Cashbah midnight..........the other guests in the hotel (?) were young fighters on leave from the resistance army against the French in Algeria.....she said her name in a hoarse Spaniish: "Soy Rhama de Meknes...!"..but then the electricity went off in the entire neighborhood.....the sound of whistles....a shout "la surete!"..... Remember ?

2011? It feels like it was filmed in the 80s. Poor resolution, lighting and colors.

I was there in 1996....for 1 day...and I wanted to stay for 1 week. I did not like anything there, especially the people. They were aggressive, disgusting and intrusive.

I never got why people who were rich went to tangiers ....i would go to casablanca or rabat ...i mean that is where morocons go! I think they liked the idea of the ferry to gibraltar......i see they restructured tax laws then....
