Great video, but maybe in a later video, as you suggest, a description of "Combined Arms" would be warrented. It's virtually the holy grail in modern warfare, but difficult to achieve well with a lot of informed planning and very fast descision making required.

I'm really interested to know how different the tank tactics are between the west and Russia. Abrams tanks seem like they are aimed towards tank vs tank battles without He-Frag rounds and a lack of tank-infantry phones. T-72/T-90 seem like they are more of a infantry support tank.

While US and NATO tactics are little different from Russia tank tactis because during the Cold War the US and European countries were afraid that Russia would try an invasion. So when the US developed their tanks, they were designed to have very good turret armor with good gun depression to go hull down and fight defensively. Where as the Russia tank is smaller with very poor gun depression. All modern tanks are designed to fight other tanks, even though US and other western tanks are much more advanced and better protected than Russian tanks. Modern MBTs don't shoot other tanks with HE rounds, they all use a type of sabot rounds to kill other tanks. They also use HEAT rounds to kill lightly armored vehicles. The US uses a DU (depleted urainum) sabot, which is considered the best in the world. Most other countries us a tungstan sabot round. The reason you see most Russian tanks covered in reactive armor is because their tanks don't have very good armor when compared to US and other NATO tanks. Reactive armor is very effective against chemical rounds (HEAT). If you don't know what HEAT is, it stands for High Explosive Anti Tank. It is what anti tank missiles use.

@@mississippirebel1409 Yeah but you need HE rounds if you want to defeat infantry or softer positions. The MPAT round has had a poor record of doing that.

@@vaclavjebavy5118 that's why NATO tanks don't operate alone, they always have IFVs as support . that's the biggest difference with russian tactics where these elements are mostly seperated and leading to disastrous results. if you're worrying about a 'tank phone" most US tanks since the M4 Sherman have had one, and HE-frag is a relic of the past with NATO employing proxy-fuse fragmentation or laser-guided munitions on its modern tanks that rely on drone or infantry targetting.
@vaclavjebavy5118
@vaclavjebavy5118 7 ай бұрын
@@neliz2k " russian tactics where these elements are mostly seperated and leading to disastrous results." Russian tactics and doctrine do include infantry support, infantry were tied to tanks since WW2 where soviet troops often rode T-34's into battle before dismounting. The problem during the Ukrainian war wasn't that the tanks weren't accompanied by IFVs, but rather that the IFVs had no infantry. After the mobilization tactics switched to be similar to Ukrainian ones albeit usually with artillery fire superiority. " HE-frag is a relic of the past" The majority of artillery shells employed in Ukraine are plain HE, not even airburst. Given that US manufacturers have admitted that shell production of even this simple type had been lagging behind demand, i think it's unlikely HE has been replaced in any meaningful sense by something so overly complex as laser guided shells... Which M1's don't even use. And if they did, they'd use them as ATGMs. Indirect fire (not high trajectory) with HE shells from tanks is possible, but it's simple enough that all you need is a FCS that's configured to fire above defillade. "with NATO employing proxy-fuse fragmentation or laser-guided munitions" What are you talking about? Proximity fuze is a FUZE, not a shell type. A proximity fuze with a high explosive warhead is still a shell. Besides, programmable fuzes have been a thing since the 1960's for tank shells. " its modern tanks that rely on drone or infantry targetting." The only country I know of implementing very programmable HE shells or guided shells is the US, and those have either been cancelled or haven't made it past prototype stage. And in any case, all you need for 'drone targeting' is a Mavic, a radio, and some basic spatial awareness.

Matsimus: great video!. Please more on tank tactics! As a former infantry soldier, I have heard of "the snake maneuver" and the "pincer movement," and as an anti tank gunner I know a little about prioritizing targets (in which order should tanks be engaged and by whom). I recall our Dutch Leopards used a technique called "sawing" - moving backward after firing, reload and then move forward to put another round downrange - when in a support fire position. Are these standard tactics throughout cavalry units, or was this a specific German (copied) tactic? And how about the use of smoke when breaking contact? Does that not take your observation off the enemy? When do you use smoke. Last but not least, since most Western forces have retired their Self Propelled Anti Aircraft Artillery Guns (SPAAGs), how must cavalry units operate when hostile air support aircraft are to target them? What defence have they got left (if any)? Another topic I am quite interested in, is the use of anti- ATGW systems (like the Israeli Trophy). Do they mean the end of the threat of ATGWs? Very much looking forward to your thoughts on these topics.
@mississippirebel1409

As a US army veteran (2000-2011), I think I can tak about that a little. As far the manuevers, the US army uses a lot but it just depends on the situation, terrain, and enemy. The tactic you are talking where a tank roles up, shoots and backs away is a very basic manuever that all tanks use. When using smoke, it is mostly used to cover your retreat or when you want to break contact and fall back. When talking about SPAAGs, most of the time tanks won't operate when they don't have air cover or when the enemy has air superiority in that area. But US and NATO countries don't really need to worry about that because it's hard to imagine a situation where the enemy is going to have air superiority because of the power of the US air force and other NATO air power. Plus SPAAGs are sorta outdated in the fact they are pretty useless unless against really low and slow flying aircraft like helicopters. As far as the use of ATGMs, they are still going to be a big threat to any tank.

Yeah! A great way to show the difference is the battle of Eastings in Kuwait. They used Soviet doctrine with a defensive dug in position where a half hexagonal place of dug in firing positions. Basically turning their tanks into fighting batteries. Americans used Surprise and Single-Point aggression and basically whiped the entire Defense force with only one casualty out of strategic attack. They basically did what Rommel did in WW2.

Tank platoon are consisted of four tanks, The platoon is divided into two sections with two in each. One is led by the platoon leader and the other is led by the platoon sergeant. The other two tanks are wingman. Wing man will stop, move and shoot then their section leader does.. The line formations is when the tanks move in a horizontal line towards the enemy, they do this when provided with overwatch by another element (other tanks and jets) or when the platoon assaults enemy positions. The wedge is when the tanks move in a finger formation, this has good fire power on the front and flanks, is used when going over flat or rolling terrain and is provided overwatch. (Other tanks and jets). The V formation provides excellent protection and control but limits fire tot he front, this formation is used when terrain restricts movement or when overwatch is within the platoon is required. The echelon formation provides excellent fire power to the front and to one flank, it is used to screen an exposed flank of the platoon or of a larger moving force. The column formation provides excellent control and fire to the flanks but permits less fire to the front, this formation is used when speed is critical, or the platoon is moving through restrictive terrain on a specific route or when enemy contact is not likely. The Staggered column formation is a modified column formation with one section leading and one trailing behind to provide overwatch, the staggered column gives good fire to the front and flanks. Used when speed is critical or there is a small area for lateral dispersion. Or when enemy contact is possible. The tank platoon makes contact with enemy the tank platoon leader usually executes a battle drill, they provide virtually automatic responses to situations which is vital to the platoons safety or to move the platoon to an advantage over the enemy. Allows the platoon to change direction rapidly.

Why is a tank platoon only 4 tanks, and no referred to as a tank squad or fireteam? is it because it's counting the crew number and not the vehicle number? also these types of videos i think you are best at, because you present them well and it's just interesting.

You not really controll more then 4(max 5) elements on your level of command...any more, and the commanders gets overwhelmed quickly. So a tankplatoon is around 4 tanks, an infantry platoon has 3-4 squads ...or upwards.companies has ~3-4 platoon, battailions 3-4 companies...etc etc

Important advice on how to conduct tank warfare in enclosed urban areas: Don't!
@LowStuff
@LowStuff 7 жыл бұрын
The russians learned in chechnya how to use MBTs in urban terrain: You don't. The syrian army hasn't learned of it and is making the same experience today. The ukrainian army learned the lesson and keeps battletanks away from towns as far as possible. A tanks best survival strategy is to keep the enemy away from you and to prevent the enemy from being able to hit your weakspots. Urban terrain naturally makes that impossible. The enemy can use buildings as concealment to move into the optimal firing position to hit your weakspots with an abundance of higher up positions to chose from to allow easier shots on the weaker top and rear armor. The terrain also offers maximum amounts of cover for enemies who were spotted or already engaged their target and are on the retreat. Your tank on the other hand can't do shit in urban terrain. The gun is more for cinematic effect than useful, your optics extremly restrict your orientation and spotting capabilities. And last but not least, urban terrain is designed for smaller vehicles than your tank. Mobility is restricted to a minimum, with the effect being amplified when you operate with other tanks in a formation. Most inner city roads support two apcs passing each other, but very few allow for two tanks to pass each other, making one a sitting duck while the other has to maneuver out of the area of threat, thus not being able to support the vehicle left behind. If you really have to field tanks in urban terrain, bring infantry, apcs/ifvs, helicopter/artillery support, IRNV/thermal support drones/reco and even more infantry just for good measure. Basically bring so many forces that you could have left the tanks out of the equation anyways because that is what you should've done in the first place.

Great video demonstrating how a troop/platoon can move. It's a shame it didn't include the vehicles working in pairs, with one pair static in a protected (or at least concealed) firing position whilst the other pair moves, often to the next pre-determined control point. Once there, that pair takes up firing positions and the other pair leapfrog to the next control point, as the static pair provide observation and support if required, and so on. Although modern vehicles have the ability to observe and fire on the move both are far easier if static. Also, in the real would, sub-unit sizes and configurations won't be dogmatically adhered to. Vehicle breakdowns, casualties, attachments, detachments, etc and the tactics of your enemy will mean that the troop/platoon leader may have only 2 vehicles or maybe 6 vehicles to work with. Stuff happens and your enemy doesn't always do what fits with your doctrine, so you have to be flexible. When H-Hour comes you have to go over the Line of Depart with whatever you've got.

Was this from the CDROM-Version of M1 Tank Platoon2? If you got this one take a look on one of the PDFs on the disk (the manual was actual excellent, too). A pity that the M1TP series was discontinued. I liked the approach of these games very much. Especially the pseudo-dynamic campaing (a feature of nearly every Microprose game of this time). That´s one of the reasons I don´t play SB anymore (Sry, scenario driven games bore me to death)

You can, with a bit of effort, make your own "pseudo-dynamic" campaing in Steelbeasts.

I can´t believe that now. You are using one of my nicks.... :O :O :O This is like getting an answer from an other self. Spooky. Really spooky. Ok, back to business: How (in short)?

Well, I'm not responsible for what and how many nicknames you use. For a campaign: Link a couple of missions using the "Operations feature". You can even use conditions on which mission comes next(depending on the last ones outcome)

Found that a funny coincidence. Well, interesting - nobody toldme about this option yet. Still, not what I´m looking for.

Not sure which games you are referring to but steel Beasts allows you to have 4 vehicle Platoons (or Troops). Indeed 6 vehicles is currently the maximum per "grouping". You can certainly create a Tank Squadron by having 3 Troops of four and 2 vehicles in SHQ = 14 vehicles.

M4A1MG42 Not all of them, you can form a platoon with 4 tanks but in normal movement, zhey will always form a line formation and in fast movement the column formation. When you pick the tanks individually, you could also do the other formations, but it would ve a little to much micromanaging for a game, were you need so much overview over the whole map.

Doubt it. AIUI, War Thunder is a game at vehicle level. Trying to get 4 identical vehicles to work together is pretty unlikey. also WT is a game so these realistic tactics would be unlikely to work in the fantasy universe of WT or WoT.

I have to dislike only because it seems low effort - could you confirm that you in part made this video yourself, or did you just take an existing video and upload it? if you made this then that's fine and I'll remove the dislike
