The Eland armored car, takes its Afrikaans name from the African Eland, the largest antelope in the world. Similar to its namesake, the Eland evolved to adapt to the tough Southern African environment. Its design, adaption, and production happened just before South Africa became the subject of international embargoes in the 70’s, spurred on by its racial segregation policies. Against the backdrop of the Cold War in Southern Africa which saw a steep rise in liberation movements backed by the Socialist sphere of countries such as Cuba and eastern europe.

Funny story from my time in the mechanized infantry in 1987: The Eland 90 crews and the Ratel 90 crews used the same shooting range when training at Tempe military base in Bloemfontein. You could easily tell who was a new Eland gunner versus a new Ratel gunner by the Eland gunners often having a bruised and blackened right eye. It turned out that having such a large gun on such a small vehicle meant that the Eland would buck like a bronco when the gun was fired. If the gunner still had his eye against the telescopic sight when this happened he was invariably rewarded with a black eye. He would quickly learn to keep his face back from the gun-sight when hitting the fire button. In contrast the Ratel 90 was a much heavier vehicle and didn't jump nearly as much when the gun went off. Luckily for me I was a gunner on the Ratel 90. Blowing stuff up with 90mm high explosive shells almost made the shitty pay worth it. Almost.

I trained on the 90 in 2SSB and was operational in the Ratel 90. Not ware of anyone getting a black eye from the sight. There is a forehead cushion to brace against so that should not happen.

You could also tell the Eland crew apart because they usually only select short people due to the size of an Eland . As a 1.9m tall Tiffy I struggled just test driving them.

Tempe brings back memories. I was a gunner on the Eland 90 and Rooikat. And yes i had many black eyes. Once the driver forgot to put on the handbrake when i fired and the Noddy reversed right back out of the shooting range.

I was a gunner in an Eland 90 during Operation Savannah. It was very effective against the enemy and did more than what it was designed to do. The main problem that we had with them was getting stuck in the mud. It has a proud history

I take it that piece of metal in the front with holes is a traction device meant to be stuck under the wheels when stuck in mud? Kinda like what you see overlanders use on their trucks?

Nice to see the Eland get a bit of attention. However, one issue not mentioned that featured in its relegation to counter-insurgency duty in SWA, (rather than forward mobile ops in Angola) was the petrol engine. Almost all the other SADF vehicles had diesel engines which created a logistical problem. Having to supply a mixture of fuels was less than optimal, especially when having to haul supplies great distances in hostile terrain. Given that the Ratel was really all round better, by the early 1980s the ‘Noddy Car’ was really past it, at least as far as forward ops were concerned. In fact, the Ratel was also a better off-road traveller and there are some reports of Ratels needing to pull bogged down Elands out of sandy terrain. I’m not certain of this, but the Ratel 90 might have been developed specifically as a replacement for the Eland, being able to cope better with the 90mm gun recoil and carry more ammunition.

Fantastic little beast. it was an incredible companion in establishing Forward Fire Control Posts for heavy artillery. Tracking and destroying or suppression fire during counter insurgency missions within South African borders during the late 80's and early 90's, it was amazing. as you stated, retiring this very African adapted, mobile, lightweight boxer, with a big punch, was a massive mistake by the new SANDF. Fond memories, from a former 155mm Artillery FCO and FOP

This was cool, I grew up seeing them In South Africa thou it was the period of transition in the late 80's, early 90's. Did not know they were such an intricate part of the border war. Unfortunately there will not be a resurrection of this vehicle as our country faces much larger problems that no amount of defense spending will fix. Also, there is a lot of Rooikats that were made that is still in use.
@RedXlV
@RedXlV 2 жыл бұрын
Even if the SANDF has an operational need for something lighter and more air-transportable than the Rooikat and Ratel but retaining fire support capability, I doubt that bringing back something as old as the Eland would be the answer.
@MrBucketstar
@MrBucketstar 2 жыл бұрын
@@RedXlV against which enemy? An armored vehicle with anti-armor infantry can do that job at a much lower cost seeing that all the SANDF does these days is peacekeeping mission out of the country. There is no need to waste money on something that has no operational value. Instead of wasting money on something like that, it be best spent upgrading the out of date Navy to secure fishing around the coast.

I really enjoy the inclusion of War Thunder footage for videos where it's beneficial. However, please, make the footage more cinematic and carefully crafted. As a player of WT and a viewer here I can tell that not much effort was put in to making satisfying b-roll. Lots of jumpy camera movement, running into the rock in the first bit, etc. I'm willing to help if desired!

The orinal Panhard AML had a flat four air-cooled engine with an electromagnetic clutch. The air-cooled engine did not perform well in African conditions.The back of the vechile sloped downward. The square back end came with the conversion to the 2.5 l GM motor. The drainage plug under the driver seat was also removed and welded closed as these plugs blew upward during a mine blast.

With the newer and far superior Rooikot in service, why would the South Africans still use the Eland 90? With the long range G6, they do not need to enter a danger zone with light armored cars, They can just shell the area . Maybe they get themselves some MLRS ? A determined country like S. Africa and Israel, sanctions just make them stronger, but I qualify that statement with the S. Africa nowadays as long as the whites are equal and not second class citizens. Most of these excellent designs originate from an era where whites were in power. The track record in recent decades where the power went to blacks, the results were lousy.

We called them Noddy Cars here in SA. DON'T bring them back into service, they were not that good in soft sand. You really need to work on getting the names of vehicles and countries right. RATEL = RAH-TIL. BUFFEL = BIFFLE. ROOIKAT = ROY-CUT, or even ROY-CAT as an English-speaking South African is likely to say. MALAWI = MAH-LAH-WEE, and definitely not Mala-why... Please contact a local of whichever countries vehicles you are covering to get the pronounciations right to compare favourably with your quality videos.

@@Frenzyv2 I should hope so, the Rooikat is newer, bigger, better armed, has more tires, has aircon, and can go faster. The damned steering wheel doesn't come off in your hands when the single nut holding it on, gets rattled loose by vibrations... yeah, saw it happen at School of Armour in 1989. Luckily a metal sided warehouse was there to help stop the Noddy Cars attempt to murder the crew... (it was going so slowly, it wasn't lethal at all, unless there had been a cliff or a minefirld nearby.) The funniest part was the driver waving the small steering wheel through the front drivers hatch to show he wasn't in control.
