We were in Normandy for almost 12 months - the local church had a poor choir but the Latin liturgy meant we felt comfortably surrounded by what we had known all our lives. Not like that now.

@@susannegroll7845 nicht ganz, zuerst veröffentlicht im Kaiserquartet, dann in „Gott erhalte Franz, …“ - dieser Franz war Als Franz II. Dt. Kaiser und später als Franz I. Kaiser des Kaisertums Österreich 😉 „geklaut“ wurde die Melodie allerdings für das Tantum Ergo von Thomas von Aquins Text…

@@susannegroll7845 Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg hatten wir Österreicher verständlicherweise genug von der Monarchie und haben haben mit dem Kaiser leider auch die Hymne entsorgt. Die Melodie war also herrenloses Gut und die Weimarer Republik hat sie von der Straße aufgelesen und dafür die Melodie der englischen _God save the King"_ Hymne den Engländern zum alleinigen Gebrauch überlassen.....

Austria-Hungary. The melody is the anthem of the Austria-Hungary monarchy. That's way it is sung at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, Austria.

Germany adopted the melody, (composed by Hadyn) for use as its national anthem (Deutschland Lied) during the Weimar Republic in 1923. Prior to that it was the Austro-Hungarian imperial anthem, "Gott Erhalte Franz den Kaiser". Another fun fact: before Germany used this melody, the German anthem was "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" which was the imperial anthem of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918, and also the royal anthem of Prussia from 1795 to 1918. The melody for this anthem is the same melody used for "God Save the King" in the UK and "My Country, 'tis Of Thee" in the USA.
