David Draiman has described himself as "sick as a dog" the night he performed this on Conan. 102° temperature and bronchitis to boot. David Draiman is a genuine baritone, with a massive vocal range, and was classically trained as a cantor in a synagogue when he was younger. I heard that they didn't even tell him they were going to use Auto-Tune, they just did it without his permission. He didn't find out until post, and he didn't even find out from them, he heard it in the track and confronted them with it. Man, was he ever pissed. From what I hear he hates Auto-Tune, 'cause he feels like it's cheating. You should go listen to the live concert version with Myles Kennedy.

It's unlikely he was unaware of the auto tune. These kinds of TV events are pretty meticulously coordinated ahead of time and all the specifics of the performance are designed. Most TV performances will not even allow for a completely live take. Too many things that can go wrong. As for how much he hates auto tune... well.. the studio recording of the song has auto tune clear as day on it, so...
@BenCarmichael0

If you listen close you can detect the corrections. But in two spots you can hear his voice crack because of the bronchitis. Amazing he was able to do this well as sick as he was. Listen to the official video and you'll hear his perfect multi-octive voice go from the basement to the roof without a fault. And without being tuned. Beautiful.

@@nikpodojil6315 I'm not going to accept a lie.. It's clear for all to hear. Of course it's tuned. And that's fine. Most music you listen to has an autotuned vocal - it makes sense. Rather than striving for the perfect performance, rhythm, feel, tone AND pitch, let the singer enjoy themselves, get a great vocal, and fix any pitchy-ness it in a fraction of the time.

It is such a pity when live performances are ruined by autotune... People do not understand that singing isn't flawless. Every video on youtube where singer is using extreme singing (belting, whistle, distortion...) and is perfect is heavily processed and either lipsynced or autotuned. There is just no way anybody can lay a perfect vocals on hard songs in 1 take. There is always gonna be some bad timing or flat/sharp note or vibrato flaw or something... Hiding these flaws puts unspeakable pressure on newcomers. I do not understand why these vocal coaches do not react only to unmiced performances of singers. Makes much more sense... @@JasonLee-ek3wz I think you are missing it a tiny bit. If I didn't know who Disturbed was, never heard anything by them, no idea of what actual genre of music they perform, I would be impressed by his vocal range and ability. Especially singing Sound Of Silence. In all honesty, when I was first told I had to go listen to their rendition of this song, knowing who Disturbed is, I was incredibly impressed and became an even bigger fan of Disturbed. I can see where the confusion came into play with Tara. I perform a lot of country music, but then I'll go into a few songs of Journey or Puddle Of Mud and I get extreme reactions.

Denver Watts that’s false. He was trained by his grandfather who was a great Cantor at his synagogue. David actually studied Jewish law and such before he was kicked out. But he does have an operatic quality to his voice so I can see where you may have thought he was opera trained. He definitely was sick during this performance and yes he still killed it cuz the show must go on right? He also has an issue where a repair done to his vocal chords has failed so no he essentially gets acid pouring into his vocal chords. He now changes how he eats and when and how he sleeps. But it has effected his range. He just works through it now to still achieve epicness

Cool to hear you talk about semi-phonatable and non-phonatable consonants. I stutter and help others who stutter as well, and we refer to non-phonatable consonants as "articulated only (t's, p's, esses, etc.) as they're formed using only lips, tongue, and teeth; and semi-phonatable consonants (n's, m's, r's, etc.) as "articulated and vocalized" (formed using vocal cords AND articulators). It's really important for us to know WHERE in our body we're making our sounds so that we can better determine what we need to focus on when having turbulence with one sound or another. When you were talking about his holding his "n" sound as opposed to his "e," I immediately said to myself, "That's because both n's and e's are vocalized!" :) Just cool to hear a pro vocal coach describing the same things that help us to speak articulately! :)

His name is David Draiman. I've known him personally for about 14yrs now. No, he doesn't use auto-tune. He and I have had many convos about music as I'm a drummer and singer in a metal band. He has a phenomenal voice. However, this particular show (against his initial protests) they did add a slight auto-tune to his voice. Apparently they do that with all the people who go on to make sure it's a totally clean and smooth performance. All his other shows and performances, it's all him. Dave has such a great range crazy voice control. Tara Simon is an absolutely amazing vocalist herself. I've seen many of her videos and such. All those freaking out and making rude and disrespectful comments need to grow up. She was pointing out what she heard and noticed. As is HER JOB! Read the name of the video genius's. The actual reason he's able to do the rasp and fry so well is because David tore his vocal cords when he was younger. A lot of their songs, especially Down With The Sickness, are VERY taxing on the throat and cords.

My interpretation of this song revised: This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the perspective of the awakened. Hello, darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware. In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a streetlamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence. And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share No one dared Disturb the sound of silence And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds (awakened Ones) telling those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle way, but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of being attacked by those that controlled the sound of silence. They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became aware of the Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time, it really pissed them off. "Fools," said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you." But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead remained in the sound of silence. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence." The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet. They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?

Ok, the people who are whining about her auto tune comment are completely over reacting. She's not knocking the guy at all. It just so happened that the producers of Conan actually did put it in for this performance. 97 to 98% is him. He doesn't use auto tune in his performances. The fact that she's able to recognize this and still give him all the credit shows, in one way, that she's a professional. From a critiqued point of view she have him an overwhelming praise.

He's a metal vocalist, if you haven't looked that already. That's why he's so good with the rasp/double tone in his voice. That's part of his schtick. He's honestly one of the most talented vocalists in the metal scene.

When he received permission from Paul Simon (btw it took a while to get it), Paul Simon admits that he prefers his version so much that I'm almost positive he gave them the rights to that iconic song. Btw...... hear Home Free on Sing Off. They did a version of June Cash's Ring of Fire that will blow your mind. Better yet check all of their stuff from that TV show. Just a real crying shame it didn't last longer cause a lot of awesome groups came out to be on that show including Penatonix.
