You can thank Douglas Dayton for the formation of Target. The business originated in Minneapolis in 1902, as Dayton's. He founded the business and was a pioneer in retailing along with names such as S.S. Kresge, Sam Walton, F.W. Woolworth, W.T. Grant, Montgomery Ward and George Clinton Murphy. In 1962, the name Target came when Dayton told a business person in one of his stores that the customers "were going thru the aisles like a moving target". The new name stuck.
