Excellent subject. Early on in my Special Forces career, I learned a really horrible accuracy standard on a really horrible target... 1 in the kill zone and 1 anywhere in the body using the old-style cartoon CQB targets. And I was more than fast enough and at least accurate enough to pass any qualification using that standard and that target. Not long after Mogadishu we changed our accuracy standard to all shots within a 3x5 card arbitrarily placed on the target where the instructor thought "center-mass" would be based on how the target was presented. What I learned was I was also fast enough and accurate enough to meet this standard. I would never have learned that if I hadn't been forced into doing so because reality intruded into our old standard. Thanks for this, I hope people are paying attention.
@Gunfighter132 жыл бұрын
We used a variety of target shapes placed onto our standard targets. It was a big change from shooting only head shots and center mass only. It was a very big shock to new shooters coming into the units. We observed an marked increase in combat effectiveness after changing the training.

Hunting is a good comparison to this style of target aquisition. You can shoot two dimensional targets all day long, but as soon as that deer shifts its' position to quartering to or quartering away, hunters know they aren't shooting right behind the shoulder for the heart anymore; depending on the degree of angle they've now changed the hold dramatically to the front legs, or chest, or back ribs.
@alexduke54022 жыл бұрын
I think that's why I'm wondering why this is a thing or even a topic. I've been hunting my whole life so it seems self explanatory. Make a straight line to what you want to hit (that also means knowing where what you want to hit resides). It makes sense this from your point of view. people don't have the experience taking less than ideal shots on game to where you have to think and line up the heart and or lungs.
@christopherobrien44932 жыл бұрын
@@alexduke5402 There are a lot of hunters throughout the country, but I've noticed most gun owners are not hunters, especially not big game. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Hunting gives you a real world under pressure scenario where shot placement on three dimensional targets are required. You're nervous, heart is pumping, it's awesome. Also the ability for still hunters to sneak through the woods without being seen or heard by game that sounds its entire life detecting and running from predators is someone relatable practice for combat. Camouflage, move in cover, don't be heard, mask your scent, ect.

I am one of those stack them in the same hole guys. I firmly believe that putting the bullet where it needs to go is far more important than the combat accuracy approach. I change targets up all the time to keep students from getting into the "it was close enough" mentality. I often use 3" stickers that have a bullseye and 2 scoring rings, I have students shoot them at 7 yards, 5 shot strings against the timer. Great info as always Aaron!!

Good info, Aaron, I noticed this on range in myself today shooting the b21e with a transition to a nra b8. I ran this with a student and the target comparison was drastically different. Difference in understanding of basic fundamentals obviously but...if you want to try it, Run whatever COF u want. First x amount of rounds into b21, transition to B8 for last round of the run. So if you do 5's it would be 4 b21, 1 nra b8. I noticed running my state qual with time, I got lazy on b21 but fast, transition to b8 and as moving back slowed things as fast as accuracy allowed. The b8 was a very tight group in comparison.

I have shot most of those targets and several others over the years. I do use photo targets with no scoring zones and showing different body positions to practice various points of impact and bullet trajectories. They are still two dimensional, so, they are of limited benefit. I am looking forward to the new series. As always, thanks for your great content

I like the photo targets myself for the reasons you list, plus it’s a bit more realistic in you won’t have an obvious “shoot here” sign on your real bad guy. The downside to them is it makes objective scoring with a metric difficult. That’s where the B8 comes in, at least for me.

I was always taught not to punch someone's nose, but to punch the back of their head, from the front of their face. Much like shooting, you should always aim for the center of the thorax or cerebral cavity, no matter the angle. Like you said, that changes depending on the profile presented.

I actually adjusted my targets awhile back after seeing yours and do a similar 5x7 with a 3 inch black circle ⚫ then a copy paper size 8.5x11.5 for a (B zone) and staple onto cardboard targets, and now if I'm not at least in or around the 3" circle out to 15 yards I get frustrated..... and do the B8 thing slow fire once a week maybe for accuracy checks.

B8 is really big here. I’ll have to measure it but the B8 bullseye is probably decent in terms of smaller points of aim, especially if you only consider an inner portion of it to be an acceptable hit. I haven’t really shot at any of these targets in a long time but I recognized most of them. Most of what I’ve done has been the photo targets without scoring so you have to consider bullet trajectory after looking at your target to evaluate good anatomical hits or not

My agency went away from humanoid targets last year because the new theory is that they would rather us to be accurate than to tell us where to aim on a target that doesn't represent reality. If you don't know where the heart and lungs should be on human, accuracy won't help you. This video is all about paper targets. What about steel? I always see people use full IPSC-size steel to justify speed at the cost of accuracy. PS: I can lay an orange peel flat. Goode homolosine projection method for Earth works well. I'm a nerd.
