You may have noticed product placements within late night comedy shows (e.g., Colbert and Seth Meyers) in the last couple of years. This Target ad is kind of brilliant from that point of view--a satirical ad that also functions as an actual ad for Target and for the products featured in the skit.

@@bevbot1 the ‘straight man’ is a comedy term for the character who is written as normal. Humor often comes from a normal character reacting to or being juxtaposed with a strange silly outlandish character. So in this sketch, Mikey and Ego play ‘the straight man’, and the humor comes from every other family member being crazy or weird.

But that one was more depressing, since it captured the collective misery of people who saw Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 elections. This one is more apolitical and captures the chaos that is having Thanksgiving dinner with the family (even though everyone missed it so much during the whole pandemic lockdown thing). If anything, this reminds me of the Macy's kids clothes commercial where it shows the harsh reality of what advertising tries to paint as warm and fuzzy.

Dear Zombie you - their Ad agency ALLOWED SNL to use their Logo. They DID hire them. Same with Wilson etc.. I mean, honestly, when I was younger I enjoyed it less cos I wasn't that close with my cousins and we didn't have much in common but you have to entertain them cos they're the guests. I used to bring my wheaten terrier to Thanksgiving. But in my sister's case he used to be her kids dog. Best part is when she kicked their small dogs outside she completely forgot about the 55 lb dog laying at my feet. He was good because his only real rule was no begging if we're eating at the table. Living room is allowed to a point. But not the table. Grandma who would only say he's ok would fix him his own little plate afterwards. She'd also save him her last bite of toast in the mornings.

That's my mother in law. Famous for attending anyone's funeral. It's like six degrees of separation. If it's her cousin's, husband's, neighbor's girlfriend's aunt she'll attend and ask why you're too insensitive to not go with them to Timbuktu for the funeral.

They also got extras and child actors, too. And James Austin Johnson's grandfather character reminds me of the many old, white, male politicians that Darrell Hammond played.

That's why I said I was happy that they're still together two years after that sketch on the 2019 Christmas episode hosted by Eddie Murphy where Eddie's Christmas dinner speech is undercut by all the crap they went through, like yelling at each other, sleeping on an air mattress, burning dinner, and putting up with Grandpa's hacking and coughing (which hits different these days).

There's still some traces of it, but it's not as dry (i.e., the game show where contestants have to guess who's a Republican and who isn't, but it's difficult because Republicans and Democrats have more in common than people think).

I love that my family never, ever had a dysfunctional Thanksgiving or other holiday gathering. No booze. No politics. Just food and football and games of Rook and lots and lots of chatting and laughter. I had no idea how rare my experiences were until I grew up and saw other people's drama.
