Tarks Gauntlet

6 жыл бұрын

Artwork used in the thumbnail is from the EVO version of the game and not present in the version I played. I decided on this simply because it's some of the only good, hi-res and clean full body images of the main characters out there, and could save me from having a thumbnail identical to everybody elses.
I played and loved both entries in the Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold steel, and have been told non-stop to give this series a go as well.
Before I get told any more and risk the game feeling like it's been over-hyped, it's time I finally start. Falcoms magnum opus series, The Legend of Heroes.

I feel like cold steel will at least. Honestly, right now I feel as though our only chance of getting CSIII and CS IV are if I and II are ported to PS4 first. Otherwise they'll probably be PC only if we get them at all.

@TarksGauntlet CS1&2 do have PS4 ports that come with all the DLC. They're called Kai versions. From a marketing perspective, it would be best if Xseed ported those to the PS4 first before CS3&4, kinda like what Square Enix is doing with the Kingdom Hearts remasters before KH3 releases. Here's the rub: the Kai versions released after CS3, and have save transfer bonuses. CS1 Kai has a feature where you get a bonus if you have a save from CS3. Releasing these games out of order in the West would require removing this feature. Meanwhile, CS3 does not have a save transfer system for CS2 saves. Implementing the save transfer features to work in chronological order would be costly for Xseed. It's far from an ideal situation.

One other thing that for obvious reasons you could not mention yet, is that all the Trials games form one cohesive narrative. Not directly but in an overarching sense. Things that happen in TitS FC affect things that happen in Cold Steel and such. The fact that embarking in this series gives you 9+ long ass games all connected in the same continent and without timeskips, makes it potentially the greatest RPG series in my opinion. Also, makes me a little sad that you played Cold Steel before Sky. Olivier is my favorite character in gaming. Period. And I think watching his character chronologically makes it better. In Cold steel I giggled like an idiot every time he showed up.
@TarksGauntlet
@TarksGauntlet 6 жыл бұрын
I might have a different perspective on Olivier but it'd be hard to call it better or worse because of the order I played in. He was my favorite character in Sky at the very least. And yeah, I'm trying to get these out of the way now as I heard CS3 massively gives up the plot of these games. I'm still catching a lot of references between the series and can still appreciate them for what they are, I'm just doing them in the opposite order now I guess.

Good and balanced review. Pretty nice. Some stuff to add. Estelle is widely considered to be (one of) the greatest protagonist of all times. You should play SC, Estelle grows as a character tremendously. About the combat system. Every move has its "time cost". In FC they all are similar, Move / item cost, let's say, 1 action time. Attack and crafts cost 1.5. Arts vary. So to get more turns, aside from using Action quartz, you need to use lower delay attacks. In SC there will be a lot of equipment and new arts for you to play with, you can buff and debuff SPD, and crafts have different time costs, which opens a lot of new possibilities. SC is difficult, yet if you know what you're doing (not an exploit, but a proper strategy) you can solo it (easiest with Estelle, cuz she has lowest delays on her crafts + can go physical, magic and full support all at once) and even on Hard difficulty and some boss fights are possible to solo on Nightmare. I have a vid of Estelle breaking the hardest boss in SC without using items (warning, a small spoiler) and beating him on harder difs with luck. The combat system in SC and above is great. Rather than a trilogy, I'd say its duology + extra. "The 3rd" is different. That's personal opinion. The biggest perk of the series for me are NPCs and their dialogues. They all have their stories, the stories are connected and keep unfolding during the game and even in the next games. To illustrate the point, if someone has an arrow in the knee (just for lulz :) ), you'll likely find someone who shot that arrow.

Cat's Stuff All the stuff about speed cost I summed up by saying "depending on the moves you choose you can rearrange turn order at any time," lol. There's a couple things I just didn't want to get too deep into explaining. Like how orbment crafting works. They're basic and general enough I didn't feel it was necessary. But thanks for the math on the speed calculations. I didn't actually know the exact numbers for some of those things.

I went through all the Trails in the Sky EVO games since I can understand Japanese. I will say, I don't think there is a JRPG series out their with quite as detailed of a world as this one. Not only are there a shit ton of characters (I think 16 playable over the entire 3 games, but vastly more non-playable), but they all get so much development and backstory. Like the story telling in this game is on par with Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. It's not as flashy or bizarre as Final Fantasy or the Tales of series, but it's waaay more detailed. I told my friend that playing through these games is like watching a puppet show act out an entire novel word for word. Unfortunately though, since there is so much to these games, and since the EVO versions are almost fully voiced (everything outside of random NPC banter), it would probably be way too much of an investment for any company to even want to try tackling a localization.

I just played through all 3 games and I was blown away. They blow the first 2 cold steel games out of water. And they are difficult! SC and PS3 version of 3rd on Nightmare Mode is easily the hardest JRPG games I have ever played. Battling in any of the Cold Steel games was so incredibly boring because even when I handicapped myself on Nightmare Mode it was still pathetically easy. Also great review, can't wait for you to play SC.
@TarksGauntlet
@TarksGauntlet 6 жыл бұрын
Cold steel kind of runs into the same sort of issue as Tales of Berseria. The battle systems are really good in both I find, but they give you so much to work with you can become OP rather easily, or at the very least you can always get yourself out of a tight spot without much effort.

I still love cold steel 1 and 2 far too much to agree with that but SC is currently the best game for me in the series. That being said i think CSIV will take that spot for me and CSIII was very close.
@tyler89557
@tyler89557 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, Cold Steel was pretty easy to just power creep in with all the crafts, damage bonuses, and status effects you could stack. Doesn't help that CS 1 and 2 were deliberately meant to be a bit of a midway entry into the franchise so their stories suffered a bit to accommodate for that. But few things will be able to top the experience of me opening a random chest on Milch Road, getting thrown into a boss fight, and getting my ass handed to me because the enemies all got their turns before my grand party of two on hard mode.

Very late to this video but I don't mind not being able to move then attack. It would have significantly made the game easier. I have to chose whether to move to line up a Penetrate move. My only issue with this game is that I'm having some trouble to be in it. I don't know if it's the way they do the world building, I don't know if it's the fact that Every, single, world, region has the same music beside the cities, I don't know if it's the way Leveling up in this game takes way too long. I played Cold Steel first and that game story telling and mood just makes me keep playing it even if it has a repetitive formula. But here, the only thing holding me is Estelle's sense of humor and some of the cast so far, Olivert is a gem, Professor Russel is just amazing to watch sometimes, but then some of the sidequests, the way you need to farm an enemy that won't die no matter what unless you abuse a specific art who can kill it because nothing can kill it, instead of just fighting the normal enemies because they take too long to kill and give way too little XP after some time. I think all of those problems are adressed on Cold Steel, hell as far as I could tell even on Crossbell arc these problems are fixed. I just hope the Second Chapter to be a better experience with the menus and mechanics, but I'm almost just doing the main story. Evne the missions on the Bracer Guild are not giving me some rewards besides money and after you learn how to farm a certai enemy, well... Money is not an issue. That being said, The story and world building is insane and I do think it's important for me to play it even with the flaws on the mechanics tho. I can see why people can love this game, but for today's standards, I really think it aged poorly.

Since I'm not playing on my PSP anymore (for now), I figured I'd check the prices for each game in the trilogy for the PC. Wound up scoring the whole trilogy for just under $60. I was going to buy DOOM Eternal, but I think this was a much better deal, providing me with far more content for my money. Cold Steel is quite similar but they tend to give you more in the way of objectives to follow up front. The pace isn't quite as slow, but if what you look for in JRPG's is going off on grand adventures to save the world this series probably won't be for you. The games kind of get to that point, but often not until half way through the second entries. They're major time investments, and while I love their approach to story telling I certainly can't say it's going to work for everybody.

(I'm civilians) You must have forgotten that chapter 1 is actually chapter 2 and "chapter 0" takes around 11 hours to complete. So I've already seen the supposed biggest city and went the way to get there, more than just that village. Thanks for responding, now I know that it isn't going to get good.

@@yellow6297 I actually did forget that, yeah. In the next chapter you arrive in Bose if I'm not mistaking it again and they called this the biggest city? Because the capital of Liberl is Gracel and you visit that place way later in the game. Also the game has quite the hardware limitations, so you can't expect huge Areas to explore (especially since every single NPC has something new to say after every bit of story progression...) The story gets going towards the end, but Trails in the Sky 1 in general is more of a build-up chapter I'd say.

Marloges I might've misheard a large city. Hardware limitations aren't an excuse given that, Daggerfall is way bigger than current open world games, many PS1 jrpgs make sure to only show you part of a city+a world map to make it seem larger, PCs in 2004 even without using any techniques would be able to pull it off. That's too bad, I have waited that long before for the story to pick with persona, but I'd rather not do that again.

I mean, this is a very nitpicky reason to drop a game, but if you're not feeling it then whatever. Plenty of great JRPGs out there.

I actually said it as a joke because of Cold Steel being localize first before Crossbell and yes it has fan translation though there are grammatical errors.

LMAO "TITS that's a bad acronym" I have this on my wishlist 19.99 on PSN for Vita no trophies which kinda sucks. But with how long it takes to play maybe that's not such a bad thing. Great review! Finally subbed

I understand the second game is twice the length of FC (Hence the break I'm taking) but part 3 I've heard is 25 hours with all side content accounted for. Seems short, but after such a long journey it may make sense.

25 hours for 3rd!? Damn I must be slow. I got just under sixty hours with the third game before reaching the end credits. That's still about 20 hours shorter than I'm used to with this series, but I definitely wouldn't call it short. Again though, I might just be slow. Personally I found SC to be the best in the trilogy by far. It does take awhile to really kick off, but once it does that payoff is glorious.

I'm a huge fan of this series and even I have to admit that Sky FC's pacing is pretty bad, even by Trails standards. Especially if you want to do all of the side quests. Chapter 2 is the worst, imo. The play and spending a week at the school feels like a genre shift to a slice-of-life anime. Plus, the pacing of the chapter handles the many issues in a linear manner, instead of the parallel progression seen in the Cold Steel games. As for the side quests breaking the pace, Chapter 3 is the worst offender. You basically have to do all of the side quests immediately, instead of progressing the plot. And these quests are obnoxious too. The shoes side quest. You have to walk all four different routes in the chapter. They don't interconnect. Without turbo mode, this could take up to half an hour, depending on how many random encounters you run into. Cold Steel's shoes quest is virtually the same but not nearly as uninteresting--you can complete that side quest as you advance the plot. Speaking of encounters, man FC is really easy. Even on Nightmare, which the game was not balanced for, random battles and a lot of bosses are pretty easy. Even on Nightmare, there is no reason to bother with random battles while you're doing sidequests. Which is weird because sidequests in RPGs usually give the player more time for battles so they stay on the level curve.

I did find a few bosses here and there offered a bit of a challenge, and some of the Treasure chests with monsters inside really stumped me for a bit, but for the most part it's easy so long as you're doing some of the sidequests and staying a decent level.

For all intents and purposes, this series should be up my alley, but it just kind of isn't for whatever reason. I've played one of the PSP "Legend of Heroes" games, "Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch", and thought it was just mediocre. I've watched LPs of some of the other entries and they just come off as being similarly disinteresting. Even with the new entries coming out, I just have no interest in them whatsoever. Heck, Falcom as a whole is kind of like this for me despite how much praise they get. The most out of them I've enjoyed was their "Ys" series, played "Ark of Napishtim" and "Memories of Celceta", and while I did enjoy what I played, it didn't really leave much of an impression to urge me to continue with it. Probably doesn't help that I've now developed a pretty hefty disdain for the community surrounding the series which just slaps negative connotations onto it and causes me to be even more dismissive.

The format of the story telling and pace really doesn't work everybody man. It is what it is haha. And I hear you on the community. Personally I get really annoyed when I want to talk to somebody about 1 falcom game and a rando intejects to derail the conversation into being about the Falcom game they want to talk about. Trails in the sky fanbase is really bad for that I find. Can't talk about cold steel without somebody saying "But what about Trails in the sky?"

I avoid the fanbase lol. Once tried talking about why I like the Gagharv trilogy more than TitS, and got laughed at and insulted. Yes, the Gagharv trilogy has issues with translation, but it's still serviceable. I can understand you're not being too into falcom games though. These are massive time sinks.

I liked the first 2 CS's a lot but after playing the sky trilogy I realized just how poorly done CS was compared to the masterpiece that is Sky. Oddly enough CS was the game where I couldn't put the controller down, the story kept me interested despite the lack of good character development... Sky was the opposite, good character development but the story didn't really interest me much so I had a lot of long breaks in between. In the end Sky paid off but CS3 got better and I have high hopes that CS4 will make playing the stale characters with all the fillers worthwhile. On the topic of not everyones cup of tea tho, theres just some bits people can like in an arc than the other, Sky had its sorta incest????? while CS had its totally not xenogears phase. If you don't like the idea of non blood related brother and sister relationship than maybe sky will be a bit suffering but likewise for CS if you don't like mechs or a typical shounen protag. If you hate dialogue heavy story then you ganna have a bad time. #Crossbellexists

Both series seem like they'd be absolutely easy to recommend but it is a little odd that where each fails the hardest the other succeeds the strongest. Rean is certainly no Estelle, but the combat in sky is certainly not on the CS level... That said CS has so many combat mechanics it might be a little easy to exploit. Both really strong game series in a franchise that continues to be fantastic.

In Sky's defense, it really isn't incest considering Estelle and Joshua met each other at an age where they can clearly remember life before the other showed up. Joshua also never saw Estelle as a sister as he already had one and Estelle could never fill that role for him. And just overall, their relationship was very well-developed and felt natural. Compared to CS though with Elise and Rean, that was incest for the sake of incest and it was just...there. Sure, nothing happened and it was one-sided on Elise's part, but considering Elise was like 3 when Rean was adopted into the family, she grew up seeing Rean as nothing but an older brother and yet she still had feelings for him. It's just ya know... Estelle and Joshua at least remembered life before the other showed up, but this was not the case with Elise.

summarizing the story is not what you call a "review".. you need to talk about the battle mechanics and the gameplay.. not the story..
@TarksGauntlet
@TarksGauntlet 3 жыл бұрын
This is not a story summary. Each aspect of the game (story, sidequests, characters, world, battle, visuals and sound) has its own defined section in my reviews. Story is an integral part of JRPGs, especially this series. Of course it needs to be talked about. Nobody wants to waste 60 hours on a story that goes nowhere. The combat section starts 3 1/2 minutes into this review.

My only criticism of this game is it's demographic is 6-14 year olds; the dialogue is very childish. It would have helped First Chapter so much if it had more than 1 event with dialogue choices.

Having played Trails in the Sky The Third, you couldn't be more wrong about that age demographic. Some of the shit you see in The Third gets downright fucked up.
