A Tarp and Bivy in a Northumberland Forest,
I set up in a ditch, great spot had a fire in the Bush Box, watched the sun go down,
Retired to the Bivy but I could not warm up.
I packed up as the evening ended and was soon back at the car, I had a coffee to warm up and set off around 12.30, perhaps some down trousers are due for the legs ? It could well be the meds causing problems,
All in all a disappointing end due to my extremities feeling too cold.

That was a great looking camp. One thing to try is use your waterproof or a puffy and zip it up around the bottom of the sleeping bag. Also fill you waterbottle with boiling water and make a hot water bottle for your footbox. You might have boiled your water on the bushbox too...having your supper and a hot drink at the same time.

Full marks for honesty Adrian and telling like it is. I'm the same age bracket as you and I was out Thursday night and my feet were a problem. I had been doing some firewood processing and I had started to sweat. My body was able to dry out but feet in boots stayed damp. As the night went on the cold seeped in and I had to spend half an hour getting my feet warm and dry. I had a pair of fresh "heat holder" socks and things were OK after that but you probably did the right thing. In my case even though it wasn't a really cold night it was me not noticing till my feet were like blocks of ice. I have a cheap stainless flask which I leave at home usually but I think I will bring next time to make a hot water bottle. I've heard the tip of putting a hot water bottle between your legs because the main arteries run down the inside of the thighs. I think I will be more aware this winter of making the feet the part by which I judge everything else 😂 Forewarned is forearmed as they say. You had a nice little pitch there anyway.

Time for the hot water bottle Adrian , I have down pants and use those little heat packs also . That mat isn’t the best tho , I used to have it but upgraded to the winter thermsrest mast Those meds won’t be helping tho !! A tent will trap the heat better I would reckon. Still you got out more than I can at the moment . Atb Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for watching, I was thinking about the mat, but have always used that rating, it was the lower legs and hands, so trousers and boots first call then the mat, don’t want to spend mega in case I can’t do the winter now, loved a frosty tarp as well !!!! See you on your next one Cheers Adrian

Nice setup, I am on blood thinners and find the same thing with my feet being cold and can be hard to get them warmed up, some nights it can be a real pain trying to get them warm. Hot water bottle a those heat trapping socks work well. There are socks that are heated via a battery that might be helpful, Sandy over on Wiltshire Man has just done a bit of a test on a few battery heated pieces of clothing for motorcycle riders that might be worth a look. Cheers from Australia

Not a question of being a failure. You did what you did very sensibly as you could have ended up in a hypothermic condition had you stayed. Blood thinning meds do effect the bodies temperature control system (I, Helen, know this from personal experience.) BUT, you did get a magnificent sunset and a walk through wonderful scenery. Take care, stay well and stay safe. Helen with Kat and Terri with Robyn.

USB chargeable hand warmers are probably worth a try. I would suggest always carrying 2 or 3 hot hands for emergencies as another you tuber (Outdoor Boys) uses them in Alaska to keep his young boys warm. Re-useable chemical reaction gel hand warmers might be a good choice also. Hot water bottle is only good if you are able to walk out in the (unlikely) event of a leakage into your sleeping bag. Hope you find the best way for you.

Adrian, I reckon you may have gotten cold because in that ditch the freezing air may have be funnelled in or became settled in the lowest area where you tried to rest. You might also need a warmer bag if youre becoming a cold sleeper. Blood thinning tablets might be the case but I'm not qualified to judge that. That's a comfortable looking campsite but there is no way on God's Green Earth I would be able to do that here in ( Florida ) America. In fact it is strongly recommended against it because of possible flooding if a rain comes along. Actually even the cold air will settle in a depression making it colder then it really is. Under some trees would be warmer and even drier. Blood thinners will make it seam colder then it really is. I know that for a fact since I have been on two different ones since 1993.
