6/30/2024 - 7/1/2024 Henry W. Coe State Park - Hunting Hollow - Redfern Pond
Made it out to Redfern Pond after work. Decided take a quick overnight trip before it gets extremely hot this week. It's going to reach 100 degF in the Bay Area. Stay safe out there!

Great video as always! I can totally understand choosing the heat over people haha. Sometimes you just gotta escape.

Haha yeah. That short amount of time does wonders. Just being out there and hearing nothing. The mornings are the best.

Great video! I love your statement “there’s always another hill”. So true. Really nice campsite and great astrophotography. With that thermacell thing, how much fuel does it use? I was looking at different options and was wondering about the ones that use a fuel canister. The Tenkara rod looks really fun and easy to pack down.

Thanks! The Pixel phone has a really cool Astrophotography mode. For each shot it needs around 4 minutes to complete and gives a short animation. Comes out way better than expected. I used the patio version of the Thermacell and it seems like it always used up the fuel a lot faster than the pads. I just read the cartridges contain 4 oz of butane and lasts around 12 hours but it's probably less. The backpacker version works the same essentially. Really came in handy at Emigrant Wilderness. There's new battery operated models from Nitecore that look interesting. One doesn't come with a battery and relies on your powerbank. I looked into the Flextail but it's expensive. I'm not sure how effective the battery operated ones are. If they produce enough heat, etc. Tenkara fishing is so much fun. I want to head to the Sierra with it 😀Thanks for watching!

Pretty nice ditty bag, going to copy a few items into my first aid kit. Also, recall seeing a headlamp post you made - have you looked into Vont headlamps powered by AAA batteries? Saw a YTer talking about the pros of it vs say Nu25 or other rechargeable headlamps. They did a comprehensive field test comparing different headlamps (including battery powered & rechargeable) - the Vont ones lasted the longest while still weighing less (even with the batteries in). Not looking to upgrade myself but thought that was interesting - better performance while still being as light

Thanks! I also carry some gear repair tape in there. I've mostly been looking at rechargeable headlamps. I've been reading a lot of praise for Zebralight headlamps on Reddit. They are similar in design to the Fenix HM50R but uses a larger 18650 battery. Skilhunt is mentioned a lot. I might end up getting one of the heaver 18650 Fenix headlamps for the longer battery life. The Emisar DW4 looks interesting if I were a flashlight nerd. You can choose which LED you want.

Good suff. How's that Thermacell? Bugs don't get too bad down here in SoCal because we don't have any water 😂 but every time I head north in the summer I have problems.

Thanks! I've used it a few times on trips and it works great. Especially during a really buggy time in Emigrant Wilderness. I've used the patio version in the past for car camping trips but got sick of spending so much on the replacement fuel. I've thought about picking up a battery version from Nitecore or Flextail. I saw a few new models from Nitecore that looks interesting.

Damn. I really want to try backpack camping. Henry W. Coe is so close too. But I have no idea what to expect and what proper protocols are (where it's ok to camp, etc). I'm going to check out that AllTrails link you have in the doobly-doo. Any tips for someone looking to try this out?

You should! For the main entrance it's designated spots where it's first come first serve. It's not too hard to find a spot during the week or shoulder seasons. If you show up after hours, there's a dry erase board where you can reserve a spot yourself. There's a pay station there to drop the fees. On the east side of the park from the the Hunting Hollow entrance you can pretty much camp anywhere but have to be a certain amount of distance from the trailhead. I forget the exact details. It might be brutal going out during the Summer, but I started off doing easy trips at the main entrance. Ridge View camp is only a few miles from the lot so you can bring whatever or head back to the car if anything happens. I just keep going all the time and figure it out. Every trip is like a shakedown trip and I learn something each time. You can check out my previous backpacking videos. I usually put the Alltrails recording and gear loadout for each trips in the description. Thanks for watching!

I just started going to Henry Coe earlier this year. Just started doing day hikes in order to get a feel for what the park is like that would be my recommendation. I’ve always started from the hunting Hollow parking lot. Soon as it cools down a little bit I’ll be doing some overnighters. Thanks rod for your videos. Great job.

@@dirtridergrandpa5873 That's awesome. Glad you're getting out there. Great advice. Come to think of it, I did some scouting around before doing my first short trip there. Did a day hike around the Springs Trail and Forest Trail Loop. Then an overnight trip at Ridge View. That was around Fall some years back.
