Taryl takes on this Mad Max lookin' log splitter in this here video. This thing has a few major issues and some minor ones too. Sit back and enjoy the show as Taryl goes over this BEAST of a log splitter. He also addresses that split in his schnoz he received from this very log splitter. It's always a good idea to use caution and not do like Taryl and injure yourself while operating one of these dangerous machines.

Hi Taryl: Just a little note, I'm an electromechanical engineering tech with experience in automation repair, maintenance and installation/construction. But I know diddly about small engines, and we just had an ice storm wander across southern Ontario. A big pine tree fell over in my front yard and needed to be sawed up. Paying someone to do it is too costly for me, so I used the only tool I had, an ancient Pioneer chainsaw left to me by my father, that hadn't been started in a good 5 years. Thanks to your videos, I got it going, sharpened, and chopped up that tree. Living in rural Canada, we are pretty much dependent on small engines for snowblowers, chainsaws, generators, lawn tractors, weed whackers, and the list goes on. Thanks to your videos I am capable of doing a lot of repairs on the small engines I have. So, thank-you Taryl, for doing what you do, showing us noobs what tools to buy, what tricks to use, what parts to get and are available. All of that knowledge has proven to be valuable.

The two levers makes it auto split and auto return, so moving both levers forward alows you to walk away and get the next log ready while the cylinder cycle forward and auto retracts

"shake hands with danger" fits this log splitter (thanks old caterpillar safety videos) this thing actually looks like a piece of equipment that could have been in that video tbh, cool to see it run and operate, but man that thing looks like it would be quite dangerous to operate if you weren't paying 125% attention to what was going on at all times, glad you didn't get hurt too bad Taryl, knotted wood can be dangerous even with a chainsaw (kickback for those who don't know), stay safe out there guys

Lots of great tricks for fixing the rewind. Didn't know about the slipknot. There's my Sunday Brunch. P.S. I wonder if someone took the return spring out of the extend valve. It would be nice to have an accumulator on the retract valve too. I've seen better home built splitters. Sorry about the splitter injury, I have wondered about it. Could have been much worse than what happened. Dodged a bullet! Thanks Taryl

That splitter was a dangerous stupid design. I serviced one and the owner built it himself. A piece of supper engineering. After servicing the engine I watched the owner split a log lager than what Taryl was splitting and this splitter went through that log like a hot knife through butter. Best engineering I have ever seen. Sad part the owner died 2 weeks later killed by Covid.

I warned an employee of the power of a 5hp rototiller. He scoffed at me. He didn't believe. Until one day, while loading a machine into a pick up, it got away from him. Trying to pull back on it to stop the forward movement the machine pulled him up the ramps and only stopped dragging him when it reached the forward part of the bed. Red faced and puffing like he just went a 3 rounds with Joe Frasier I asked him, "Why didn't you just let go of the handle bars?" He had new respect for machinery. Glad you didn't get seriously injured.

A few things: 1) That initial stroke is really slow compared to what it would have been from the factory. 2) It is missing a stabilizer leg under the wedge, and an aluminum catch pan on the front. 3) You typically run with three people - one loading logs on the lift, one person loading the next round and running the controls, and one person to move the wood away from the catch pan. That machine has definitely seen some use over the years...

I’m still laid up from my bout with the killer tiller. I felt just a bump on my leg and had an eight inch long cut that cut a blood vein. Didn’t last long after I cut that vein before I passed out. You don’t realize how you have to be on your guard because these machines have a certain element of danger in their use. I haven’t got back out to my shop yet but I still will have to figure out that tiller. I may have to throw apiece of metal over the tines to put my foot on to start it. Then I will probably just sell it but I’m wondering if I shouldn’t take the engine off of it so that it can not be used. Good luck Taryl and stay safe!!!

I just had a crapsman brigs n scrap em with one of them craptastic plastic carpentraters on it, and it had a plastic needle valve. Bastidges. That log splitter amazes me. In Washington state, we put one round atop another and go around the perimeter with a maul till it breaks into about ten pieces. IT'S A LOT QUIETER. You just sharpen the maul and use a wedge. Faster work. But for younger Sasquatches.

Two inches higher, it would have had your eyes out! ⚠️ You also court danger as I do. Just a couple of weeks ago I was trying to find an air leak on our forklift truck. I was working on it with the engine running, and following the stream of bubbles in the fuel lines - I found a clip that was loose on one of the lines, so I pushed the clip along the line, looking for where it came from. I pushed the fingers of my left hand ( I'm left handed too) straight into the radiator fan. I managed to mangle all five fingers. Your right about one thing - These machines are dangerous, if not to say lethal.

We used to have an old log spitter that for real was dangerous.. you put the log (much smaller than this) on a very fast conveyor belt and than transported the log into 2 "cogwheels" where the log got pinched in between so it split and then it shot out the back. Well there was a cover over all of this except the conveyor belt and there was a rubber flap on the back that would slow down the logs so they didn't shoot out too far away. But didn't always stop them and sometimes it shot the log back at you 😅
