@16:56 I love how in No Death Mode the dev changes the room name "prize for the reckless" to "i can't believe you got this far" and just gives the player the trinket instead of making them solve the puzzle.

@@zapdragon5942 80s games could have lots of screens, too. The classic Head Over Heels game had around 250 screens, and they were in 3D-like isometric perspective! (so each screen needed multiple levels of blocks to create a room).

This game makes me so emotional, perhaps nostalgia when i played this over a decade ago as a teen, and it having one of the best soundtracks ive ever heard. Also im just really into retro gaming and i just really love the commodore-like visuals

16:54 Ah, so now I see that in "no death mode" this screen is different. It doesn't have the spikes at the top so you don't have to actually die to pick up that trinket, and the name of the screen is, fittingly, "I Can't Believe You Got This Far" :), instead of "Prize for the Reckless".

what's interesting about watching a TAS of this game is that it still uses the exact same strategies as a regular speedrun. i.e. this game really is purely based on skill. (most of the pixel-perfect flips here are doable by a real person)

This wasn't _the_ TAS, this was just _a_ TAS. As in, I think this guy just said "I like this game and I like using TAS tools so I'm going to make a TAS of it just for fun." Either that, or no actual optimal TAS existed yet by this point. There certainly is one now, although I don't know if anyone did this mode just because it's less interesting (no death exploits).

I just realised that Positive Force was composed in such a way that, on a perfect run, it exactly accompanies your actions in the Tower level. Or maybe it was the other way around. Wow. (I just watched Game Score Fanfare's video on a similar scene in Ori and the Blind Forest.)

Look up how TASes work. I'm sure it still took a fair amount of time, but probably not much practice, depending on how exactly it was made.

+Vordex7727 Actually you're all wrong, in VVVVVV you have a small time window in which you can change your orientation AFTER you fall off, so even if you aren't standing on anything, you have a few grace frames to allow you to revert

One last batch. 13:00-ish - It might be faster overall to get these trinkets earlier, perhaps on your way to The Tower. 15:45 - A well-aimed flip from the bottom of the rightmost platform of Swoop can bring you directly into Spikes Do! and skip a couple screens. 17:41 - Head right and double back twice quickly to touch the inverter a second time. 17:51 - Flip off the top left peg in Television Newsveel while holding left and you'll go straight into the first gap in Vertigo and save some time.

***** Have you noticed in the title of this video that it says TAS? That stands for Tool Assisted Speedrun, which already states that this run has used various things such as slowdowns and savestates to improve the run as much as possible. I assume you're new to this.

He did not finish the game on no-death mode completely legit. If he had, he would not have used TAS. He would have loaded the game, started no-death mode, and done it.

if you played the game before you'd understand. you can flip off a platform several frames after you leave it, and the spikes hitboxes are very misleading.

In the normal game, it requires dying at a checkpoint in that room, so it was removed so you can actually get the trinket without losing No Death mode

No, he gets teleported back on board. Just not in this mode for some reason.

It's different on No Death mode. If you see he just kind of jumps up and grabs it because the platform is already displaced.

no offense to yukabacera, but why do people still watch this and find it impressive? i understand it's a big video with above average traffic, and most of the audience don't speedrun this game, but for a TAS the execution is terrible. it's more of a tool assisted walkthrough. even for 2011 standards, where particular strats and routes were still undiscovered, this run hits walls and waits around for things despite being run on hourglass with access to savestates. again no disrespect meant to the creator, nor the viewers but there are far more impressive speedruns of this game available if you search for them

Okay, to the tons of other commenters questioning this guy's tangibility, TAS means tool assisted speed run. In other words the software in the description allowed him to go through the game with relative ease. That does not mean that this was effortless, but rather just like a switch from hard to easy. Still leaves a challenge, but to answer your question simply, no he isn't doing this vanilla. He had some help on doing this.

Ok I know now this is a TAS but according to PSNProfiles, at least 5 people have played through this game without dying ONCE! What kind of sick shit is this man. I can't begin to imagine how much frustration and agony was involved in those playthroughs...
