Hey love the video, instant subscribe for me. Can I ask, at 04:50 you mention recording at 48khz and how the Zoom can lead to audio drift on video sync. Is it to do with the frequency?
@PodcastMeister
@PodcastMeister 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks Luke! No, 48kHz is the “sample rate”, meaning how many times a piece of digital audio is recorded per second. (i.e. CDs are at 22 Hz frequency and have a sample rate of 44.1kHz.) I’m not much of a video expert, but 48kHz is considered better for video as it can be divided by the normally used video frame rates easily (24/25/30/50/60fps), and will result in a whole number, vs 44.1kHz will not (for all the fps‘) - for syncing and editing purposes these whole numbers are supposed to be ideal and easier to work with. Nonetheless, I did sync audio recorded with a Zoom P4 at 44.1kHz and had no issues whatsoever, albeit never longer than 15mins.

I've bought my Mixcast 4 last week and your video is a great boost to experiment even more. Btw, is it you playing the piano when talking about Line Inputs 😏? The USB Delay is great when used with Ecamm and Atem - although both of these also have it "built in", albeit a bit cumbersome to reach. Yes, I'm lazy but also very practical. I only need to calculate the right amount of delay needed (for the moment 240ms when using the Audio Hijack as my audio --> then into the Loopback's virtual microphone.. Sounds complicated? Yes it does, but now I can do everything from the Mixcast, use it as my audio source and I'm done. Subscribed.

What a great review! Wish they done one with more than 4 XLR inputs! For a podcast of up to 6 people, what would you suggest? Still the Zoom PodTrak P8?
@PodcastMeister
@PodcastMeister 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! For 6 participants (if they are all present) the Podtrak P8 is an OK option, but I would take a look at the Tascam Model 12. With that you could occasionally invite a remote guest on top of the 6 present with built-in mix-minus. It‘s less elegant though as you will need extra headphone amps so that everyone gets a headphone. Even better would be the Zoom Livetrak L8: it also has a built-in mix minus, same multitrack sd-card recording, etc. it has 4 headphone outs so you‘ll only need one headphone amp to split it to some more headphones. The Zoom L8 is cheaper and smaller too.
@kodspal
@kodspal 2 жыл бұрын
@@PodcastMeister Ah man, thanks for those details! Forgot to ask about getting extra headphones included on a mixer with less headphone ports and you included it haha. What do you think of the L12?
@PodcastMeister
@PodcastMeister 2 жыл бұрын
@@kodspal the L12 is fantastic (ie it has a one-knob compressor on the channel strips and even more monitor mixes than the L8), but you do not have built-in mix-minus. You can solve it with iRig adapters (see my earlier videos about it) but trust me, the convenience of having it built in is priceless. Also I have a video about setting up the mix-minus specifically on the L8. The only downside I could think of when it comes to the L8 is the lack of built-in USB mix minus. (although you can set it up, but then you will loose the built-in mix-minus option.) To be fair: no mixer other than the dedicated podcasting consoles have USB mix-minus built-in.

I just ordered this device so I'm eager to learn and put it to work. The one feature I have not seen on any review is the ability to PAN a channel input Left or Right. The Combo XLR are great but without a PAN you can't use it to mix a band. More specific to my use case is I want to put cameras with sound inside a fighting ring and use those camera mics for action sounds from the fighters. Being able to PAN will help pull audience in so sounds that are seen on the screen on the left are heard in the left speaker. Does the Tascam Mixcast 4 have the ability to PAN left or right any of the inputs?
@PodcastMeister
@PodcastMeister 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have not seen panning on the device either. You can pan inputs it in an attached DAW though as it does output the individual channels via USB into your DAW - just pay attention to that in you DAW the channels 1 and 2 will be the stereo mix left and right, the channel 3-4-5-6 will be the four mono combo jack inputs, 7-8 the USB in, 9-10 the TRRS or the line input, 11-12 the Bluetooth and 13-14 the soundpads. Dual ones are stereo. This could work even ie with an iPad with Garageband attached.

@PodcastMeister
@PodcastMeister 2 жыл бұрын
You certainly can connect two mixers to one computer, although certain DAW’s (like Garageband) will not be able to work with both at the same time. You can also connect a bluetooth adapter to the line input jack as it is a trrs-jack, you will just need to switch on the back to the 3.5mm input from the 6.3mm dual line input. I don’t really understand the use case, but it’s possible.

all 13 nice functions, but one necessary functions stopped me from get it. That is the Auto mute monitor (when engage mic fader) function. We all have speakers/monitors in our setup. when we are not talking to the mic, we all enjoy use the speaker monitor to monitoring on the program. But how many time did you forget to turn off your speaker monitor before you engage the mic fader, and then get a crazy whistle. that will jam up your recording. I know you can post edit that, but how much trouble you have to go though. When you can just have this simple little function turned on like the old time radio station analogue mixing table. I thought Tascam should understand the importance of this functions from the radio work flow. But yet this function is missed. On the other side, Rode Caster pro has this function, which is critically needed by pod casters, and Rode listens. I have talked to the Tascam rap, they said they will look into it, but never got any feedback. I am not sure if my though has gone anywhere. but a month and a new firmware upgrade later, this function still hasn't been added. I am not sure about you, but I can't use this fancy thing with out this auto mute function. it will make my pod cast workflow so messy, because every time I open faders, I need to check the monitor volume. ( think about how many time do you turn on/off your fader during a show) You will what I mean! I guess If Tascam doesn't add this functions, Tascam is really pushing me to Rode caster pro. If you are getting the same concern, please support me, Let's help Tascam develop the best Pod cast mixer together!
@PodcastMeister
@PodcastMeister 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the reluctance may come from this: they have the feedback prevention function, which mutes the mic if it does not get a loud enough signal. That’s the theory anyway, I was about to test it in a conf call, but then also for your situation. It’s definitely not the same function as the auto-mute monitor and it won’t help you if your monitors are turned way up, but let’s see what it can do.

Yes. For this, you need to go to Hardware settings | Multitrack, switch on multitrack recording and select “FX Bypass”. This essentially means pre-fader recording, so the individual channels will be recorded irrespective of the fader position (or mute status) at unity level, only the main stereo track will be post-fader.

Hi, sure it can, as if you connect it via usb-c to your computer it shows up as an audio in-out source. Watch out for using a good usb quality cable (or the one that came with it), as it can be quite sensitive to that. You can even set the usb audio delay on the Mixcast 4 so that it is in sync with your video feed. (You can also do it in OBS, but using the Mixcast 4 it’s one less thing your computer has to take care of.)

Which one is a practical rodecaster or a mixcast4?
@PodcastMeister
@PodcastMeister 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you need. Both essentially do the same thing, have about the same size and cost. The Tascam adds a lot of extras (like for me the combo jack inputs and the extra line input make it the central audio interface of my home studio) but you may prefer the Røde design and/or sound (with the Aphex effects). The software is a question of taste too: Tascam‘s more versatile, Røde‘s more straight forward. If you need any of the 13 unique features, the Tascam Mixcast 4 is more practical.

Hi, if you press the solo buttons for each channel you want to hear, but not for your channel, it will not affect recording, but you will theoretically only hear the channels for which you‘ve pressed the solo button. Your headphone needs to be plugged into the Phone 1 port or the trrs-port in the front, it only works there.

Oh, another thing - Tascam.... those volume fader knobs... really? Too shiny, plasticky and wobbly. And .. grey.. With a desk lamp above it or in a darker environment, they're not so visible. Suggestion? Make them black with a white line in the middle, or white with a black line - as I actually took and moved from my Mackie analogue mixer to the Mixcast 4. Thank-you!

I own one and can say there’s nothing plasticy or wobbly to this device, infact, it’s really sturdy..

The mixer has frozen twice and makes a buzzing sound. The only way to fix the problem is to restart it by disconnecting the power cord.

The mix cast for will not work with podcast editor on Mac OS. They simply don’t work together.

Does is have universal ducking

If I understand the term „universal ducking“ right, it only has universal ducking: so if Mic 1 speaks, every other channels volume is lowered. Is that what you meant?

@@Podcastforthewin I have just tested it with Bluetooth and USB connected and playing, it has lowered the volume for both (but hasn’t muted them!) as soon as I have started speaking into Mic 1. (Ducking only works for Mic 1)

BUT! It did NOT lower the volume for the sound pads. The good news however is that for the other input channels ducking worked well even with Auto Mix on.

Drawback: you cannot talkback to remote calls (bluetooth, usb and trs). Built in mix minus aren't unique to this product
@PodcastMeister
@PodcastMeister 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, mix-minus is no unique feature - it is part of the 7 features that make it a dedicated podcast recorder. 😉 Talkback should really work for the remote connections, agreed (see at 20:29 )

@@PodcastMeister Ok so I’m still confused. You can talkback to zoom but not a phone call? Like a landline or cell? Forgive me if this sounds like a foolish question. I’m stuck between the Zoom and the Tascam for this very reason.

@@Hdthevoice Correct me if I‘m wrong, but to me it seems like a misunderstanding of what the „talkback“ function does. It does not mean that you can „talk back“ into a zoom- or a phone call, but it is more a producer function. If you press the Talkback button, you can speak to your guests while recording, but what you say while the Talkback button is pressed, will not be recorded. It is handy to i.e. prepare your guests for the next question or tell them not to touch the boom arm as it creates a noise in the recording. The unfortunate downside of this function is that you can only talk this way to the guests who are present with you and have a mic and a headphone connected to the mixcast 4 on channels 1-4. And while the talkback function does not transmit your voice to the remote guests in talkback mode, during the normal recording (i.e. when the talkback button is not pressed), you can of course talk to the remote guests who are connected via usb or bluetooth or a trrs-cable, they will hear you and you will hear them and it all will be recorded. Let me know if itˋs not clear.
