The ad copy for the butter was some of the best I've heard. Kudos to their copywriter/marketing department. The tone is very tongue-in-cheek, informative and best of all, conversational. The pacing is superb, and the writer(s) deserve a royalty fee (at minimum 5%) for that work. Gosh, I love good copywriting. I always read ads when I come across them in magazines, and I always read the copy on the products I'm considering purchasing.

I will say that I adore the attitude of the second company. Most of these places try to convince you that their quality or name alone is worth more than any price, like they're the only TRUE version and anything else is fake, etc. The butter's just saying hey, this is new and weird and pricey. But it's good to try something new and weird occasionally and it's pricey because we made sure it's quality. You'll cook something great, because we did the hard part for you. They aren't claiming they're the only way to experience butter and life's better with loyalty to them, they're saying life's better if you splurge on something pretentious occasionally and they're trying to make sure they're worth that splurge. I can respect that.

I wanted to see what other flavors they had and if they shipped to the US. But I just want to tack on for anyone else reading: aside from the crab butter, they have loads of butter that is actually reasonably priced. Their normal, single rolls (which looks to be about 2-3 sticks of butter. Can't find exact size) are only £5. And they have 8 other flavors like smoked barbecue, truffle and parmesan, and bearnaise for just £5. The crab one is the only one that's £38 and they have their No. 78 Spanish ham and saffron butter that goes for £55 . I dare say they aren't even that pretentious, but do lean into the ridiculousness of the overall brand and offer some over the top items.

Since you asked to be corrected, Mike, here goes. When Germany united in 1871, Bavaria demanded the Reinheitsgebot be enforced in all of Germany but they faced FIERCE resistance from the rest of Germany. It wasnt actually implemented in the rest of Germany until the early 1900s and the name Reinheitsgebot (purity order) wasn't used until the 1920s. As for the wall story, you're probably thinking of the Brandenburg Beer War. When the wall came down, West Germany was now enforcing it's laws in the east (As West Germany annexed the east, the opposite of what Mike implied.) and there were breweries in the east who could no longer label ther beer as beer. This led to the Brandenburg Beer War where several breweries fought for the right to call their speciality beers beer. The laws have been relaxed over the years and you can apply for permits to call your product beer even if it doesn't follow the Reinheitsgebot, otherwise gluten-free beer could never be called beer. Ace episode, though.

Call me a dumb american, hell I am not even a fan of beer anyway, but "Purity Rules" kinda ruin things in my experience. Alton Brown said it best, once some place becomes the "Home" of a food and thus becoming this standard that has to be kept original, it ceases to be good because often they tend to focus too much on keeping what they have "true" that they loose the spirit of what they were making. Now there are exceptions to this, but idk, kinda cant help from being skeptical, I have had German beer before, and frankly, it just tastes less sweet, not better, not worse.
@schweinerwinkler1633
@schweinerwinkler1633 5 ай бұрын
@sterlingodeaghaidh5086 the reason the rules were placed was because people were putting low quality ingredients in their beer to produce it cheaper. It's not a law as such that you can't put anything else in beer.

Tesla beer definitely wins "most pretentious", because it's just a good beer (surprisingly) in a fancy package with a famous name slapped on. The rest were also all pretentious, but not in the same way: they were all extreme examples of elaborate presentations of high-end ingredients, but still useful in their own way. I can see using the olive oil pearls, and that shellfish butter, if price weren't such an obstacle. I couldn't care less about the beer. Enjoying the daily video treat, gents, keep up the good work!

I'm in the US, and I just checked a chain liquor store for a Helles Lager (aka same kind of beer as the "Gigabier") that was brewed in Germany (aka not an american rip off). Anyway, you can get a 6-pack for $13.99 (or $2.33/1.83 UK pounds per bottle). Now obviously, I'm not insane enough to taste the gigabier so I cannot attest to quality difference (though the liquor store beer does seem to be pretty highly rated from reviews and what not), but that aside- even at the price Ben paid -- we're talking the tesla beer was 14 times the price. At the mark up price, it is 409 times the price. There's no bigger sucker than a Tesla stan in 2023, it seems.

@@MatthewWaltonWalton Exactly, I feel like it only really works with things that actually have a bit more of a flavour pop too. I don't particularly enjoy a burst of olive oil in my mouth, no matter how high quality it is. In 2012 I had my "Projektprüfung" for my apprenticeship as a lab technician. I guess in english that would be project exam or maybe project review? The project my team had was brewing and analyzing beer. One of the team mates found a keg of Fürstenberg Pils, that went past its shelf-life in 1998. So of course we included it in our roster of samples. On opening the Pils smelled like Hefeweizen instead. We also risked a taste and again, the taste was more like Hefeweizen instead of Pils. Analyzing it with GC-MS the profile of it's component also was more like Hefeweizen. No idea if it's a universal truth, or we just had some good circumstances, but it seems that Pils becomes Hefeweizen if you just wait long enough. I think I still have all the records of our project somewhere on a USB drive. Might be time to have a look at that stuff again.

The German Purity Law of 1516, The Reinheitsgebot of Bavaria is generally considered to be the first food safety law instigated on European continent. With the unification of Germany under Bismark, it was insisted that this Purity Law be implemented throughout Germany. Unfortunately this led to the wholesale demise of other Germany regional of which Wiesbier, Altbier, and Koelsch were to survive, and the beers that made the Hanseatic League and grew its wealth, such as Hamburgbier which have been lost to time. Today, in the Craft Beer world, the Reinheistverbot is considered by many to be an unnecessary anachronism that artificially stifles creativity and expression and does nothing either, to preserve anything other than a regional Bavarian tradition.

Everything that is brewed according to the German Purity Law is beer. Everything else is at best a mixed beer drink. I think that the Purity Law is one of the most important laws for preserving and promoting the original art of brewing. Anyone who produces a different drink with more ingredients simply has to give it a different name.

I agree. Also, many beers, wines, and liquors are not meant to be aged at all. In fact, aging the wrong product can result in off flavors and deterioration. Most beer is generally meant to be enjoyed relatively soon after brewing so there is a good chance that this beer is not a good candidate for aging.

I love that fun and often lighthearted episodes like this can show how insightful you guys can be. Mike's thoughts on the valuation of a product for its scarcity or branding are spot on... It really does change the cost of a product depending on how you perceive its value. The Tesla beer is pretentious AF, yes... But damn, they know how to sell a concept, don't they?

I'm loving the video a day! It makes me very happy. I don't know who was doing the camera work today but I was getting seasick watching. Especially during the oil caviar part. lol Maybe a tripod next time. Still love your videos.

I really like European beer, the Czechs and Germans have some really good stuff. And the growth of the boutique brewing industry in the U.S.A. has shown beyond doubt that the brewmasters have definitely done a bit of traveling and tasting. Oh, and I thought the olive oil "pearls" were totally arse. And as for compound butter, splash out on some foo-foo high butterfat butter and make your own. The empty "Darth Vader's Brewery" bottles would make for a really beautiful addition to a knick-knack cabinet.

I bet you could make a wonderful bougie bruscetta by mixing olive oil pearls, balsamic viniagrette pearls, and some of that ketchup kaviar from a few years ago
