I joined Costco just for table wine. The Kirkland label rioja is a lot better than the chianti, fyi.

hi Matthew: i've enjoyed the kirkland sauvignon blanc from N.Z., the malbec from Argentina, the rioja from Spain, and especially the gigondas from France. all under $15. and worth drinking for the sheer pleasure of it. great video. keep up the good work.

Thanks for the video. We live not too far from Bogle, it has been interesting to see how they have massively grown over the years. We do periodically pick up a Bogle when we want something appealing to a wide variety of people or something simple for a dinner. I do like the Old Vine Zinfandel, but sometimes find other varietals and their red blend tend to have that sameness to them.

Interesting video and subject, other wine KZfaqrs also have made videos about entry-level price point wines at Costco. Unfortunately, KS CCR was a disappointment, it just didn't deliver what it promised; in spite of a highish Sucking score. 😅. Their Cotes du Rhone Villages is pretty solid, we had it once or twice and for the money it was enjoyable. Their Asolo Prosecco has a decent QPR, with a nice balance of fruit and acidity. Wines from Charles Smith in Washington, like the Kung Fu Girl Riesling and their Kvine Evergreen Vineyard Chardonnay were quite drinkable, both I and my wife and average drinkers enjoyed them. Kirkland's 1er Cru Chablis is worth mentioning, it doesn't have the complexity and depth of some other 1er Cru Chablis, but for 20 bucks or under it is pretty okay. That wine you tasted reminded me of the Line 39 PN we had back in 2016, again it didn't have bags of depth or complexity, but at the 12/13 dollars price range it was fruity & not overly oaky. I don't think we can ask much more from a wine at that price. Definitely at Costco when you choose wines in the 15--20 dollars range the quality increases compared to the 10--15 range. Nice to see Bogle's Zin being recommended! Super-nice family that still holds the company private. You might want to see how their new aluminum bottled wines taste. I haven't tried them yet myself. Could make for a good alternate green packaging episode. Maybe also try the boxed wines from Bedrock and Tablas Creek. Cheers!

Matt, I recently tried the Kirkland’s Columbia Valley Cabs in China.. it was closed at first but opened up with great fruit bouquets after 2nd day.. value for money!

My local Costco in California sells really good stuff. Last year in December, they were selling Antinori Tignanello. I snagged a bottle for $115. Recent purchases have been Echo by Chateau Lynch Bages for $35, Le Petit Smith-Haut Lafitte for $35 and a bottle of Chateau Gazin for $60.

My Costco has an asterisk sign on anything that is a close out, also the price will end in a 7 or a 9. If you find a good deal on a wine you really like at Costco it’s smart to stock up, especially if it has that asterisk or 7 at end of price.

Every wine geek says this. Pinot Noir should not be the wine that transitions people from Whites to reds. I completely disagree with that sentiment. I think something like gamay is better. I have yet to have a good Pinot. Enjoy the video overall though.

I think the sweet spot at Costco is the $15-$25 range. Though I really have a soft spot for their Marlborough SB and their Prosecco Rosé.

I really liked the Kunde Cab, it was around 16 bucks. I see it at Publix for closer to 30. Was really bummed when it left my Costco. I’m in N. FL.

I only buy Rioja Reserva at Costco. An always changing lineup, but for under $20 I'm never disappointed. They never have that mass-produced chemical note.

Yeah, the Portuguese wine you covered is great and that it’s just a red wine. I think you might get what I mean it’s not 92 maybe 89 but it’s a perfect 89. It’s just a red wine no chemical flavors no crazy sublties. Rather than pulling out some amazing red wine that has some special flavor profile for my friend like huh I don’t get it. This is the perfect wine to bring out just perfect red wine nothing complex but it’s full body and it’s not boring. Recently, the Rioja thank you recommended it was amazing. It was like 12 bucks have a great wine, but it has some complexities so slightly more challenging for non-wine friends. I buy the dry rosé Prosecco by the cases. It’s a great one.

Always Portuguese for quality & price point. My opinion: the $15 - $25 price point at Costco or Total Wine will keep you happy & satisfied.

I’m in Maryland so places such as Costco, Sam’s Club, Trader’s Joe or any other grocery stores are not allowed to sell alcohol. 😅 We have to go to our local Wine and Spirit stores.

I would say from Costco their Malbec from Mendoza is probably the best for the money

i'm almost always disappointed by costco wines. i go to costco multiple times per week, i buy wine even more often , i always look at the wines there , but I'm almost always disappointed, i have better options around me.

"Smells like/Tastes like red wine." 😖We've all been there. With whisky it's even more confounding. "Tastes like whisky." "Yeah, but it doesn't taste anything like the previous glass. How can they both taste the same?" Anyway, Matt, that was a fun video and a reminder of what regular folk buy. Their wine experience is completely different to ours. Although, I have to say that I have bought bottles like this on my wine journey. It's the kind of wine my mother buys. Can't say I was surprised about the Chianti or Bordeaux. It's kind of what supermarket Italian and French wine tastes like at that price point. Definitely going to get better bang for back with Portuguese or Spanish wine at $10. It's interesting how the British middle class still stick with French and Italian wine due to some vague idea of its quality. Trouble is they very rarely spend more than £10-15 a bottle so these examples are the kind of stuff they get. Far wiser to buy a Spanish or Portuguese wine especially if you want a cheap bottle in a pub or restaurant. The arrival of New World wines in the 90's really changed the scene. Big, uncomplicated, jammy fruit flavours and higher abv was just what a lot of folk were looking for. All 'snobby' talk about 'complexity' and incomprehensible wine labels were consigned to the dustbin. Australia really led the way, followed by Chile and Argentina. New Zealand whites got a look in too. South Africa got in also but a bit later. Wine from the U.S.A was a bit more restricted. Today it's all on but there's a demographic that like that kind of wine. A £10 Malbec from Argentina carries way less risk than Chianti or Bordeaux for the same price. Oddly enough, there are still so many countries with wine culture that are hardly known outside their country as you well know Matt. I have a dear Cypriot friend that reviews the excellent wines of her country on social media but you will struggle to find any of those wines outside the country. She also reviews some Greek wine and the same is true. I recently enjoyed a lovely and interesting bottle of Turkish wine (Eastern Anatolia producer) in a Turkish restaurant in Birmingham. The guys were nervous I wouldn't like it but it was terrific and great value (under £20 in a restaurant). Cheers Matt. I even watched the crummy adverts for you. Welsh
