A video breaking down the many motifs and repeated scenes in the 2010 anime Tatami Galaxy, while also talking about how it personally relates to my views on mental health and absurdist philosophies.
It's been a really long time since I last uploaded a video. To all the people who subscribed during the last eight months when I didn't upload anything...thanks a lot!! I will continue uploading more videos. The next big video I wanna work on I think will be about Spongebob...but I won't promise at all how long that might take.
But yeah. This was a really personal video to make, as Tatami Galaxy was one of my favorite and most personally affecting anime I watched back when I was in college...and the scope of this project ended up being a lot more daunting than I originally anticipated.
As a result, making this video was a super long-winded journey. But after coming up with the idea and starting the outline over eight months ago...I'm extremely satisfied to have finally finished this project, and am very much looking forward to working on different things.
To me, this video provides a testament to how...I can eventually finish something, after being stuck on it...many, many times. Because I have been stuck on how to progress with this video idea countless times over the past eighth months, and have also questioned many times why I was dedicating so many hundreds of hours to such...a small, niche and pretty dated topic haha.
And so to be perfectly honest a lot of times, the journey to make this video....felt really absurd! But despite the absurdity, the video is finally done! And I'm very happy that I finished it.
And to whoever's reading this...if you watched it...then that's even more incredible!!! Thank you!!!
I honestly have very low expectations of people watching this video, because Tatami Galaxy isn't exactly the most prevalent anime today. It was made in 2010 and probably didn't even have that many people watching it at the time, and there are probably even much fewer people still talking about it today.
So I don't think anybody was really asking for this video LOL.
But I really wanted to make this video, because I feel like the thoughts I formulated in this video were something I've just been really wanting to express and preserve in digital permanence on the Internet. And it's like...a raw reflection of the person I am, right now, in 2022, and what I'm thinking and how I view things and stuff...and idk. Much like my Akira video, this was primarily a personally rewarding video to make.
.
.
.
But if you ended up watching...thanks for watching!!! I hope you liked it! Thanks for watching me talk for a whole hour about a pretty old anime!
And also if you want to...please subscribe!!!! I will make videos....on a super sporadic basis. And the topics are usually pretty random: basically whatever I find personally rewarding, which can be highly variable...but maybe you'll find them rewarding too!
Okay, thanks for watching! And also for reading.
I'm gonna start working on another video that hopefully doesn't take eight months to make.

I visited the dormitory where this anime was set in, it was worse than what the anime portrayed, but at the same time it was very wonderful. If you ever get the chance to visit it before it's going to be demolished ( there is an ongoing law suit between the students and the university) you should visit it, it's pretty close from Kawaramachi Station ( one of the central station in Kyoto ) . In the website it's said if you talk to one of the students they will guide you through the dormitory, but when we went there none of the students lived there guided us, but you can stroll in the building freely they said. At the end we got to talk to one of the students who lived in the other newer dormitory and he kindly explained the building to us. It reeked of old meiji buildin (specially the toilet, it is a shared men and women bathroom, probably no one used it ) but also because of its age, it you can feel the history, the comradery between the students through history, definitely must check this place if you loved this anime, also if you'd like to ask more of my experience visiting there more you can ask me anything !

Hi, I have read 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and I would like to add a little extra to your part where you mention the book because there are a few more things in common here. Firstly, Captain Nemo isn't isolated, he has a crew, but he does isolate himself from the world. It's said and shown that he has a lot of hatred towards people and how he thinks the world works. The entire book is about the main characters who get picked up by the Nautilus, trying to convince Nemo to share his invention with the world, but he refuses because he deems the entire "world" to be worthless. The book in Tatami Galaxy for me shows what could Wasashi become if he used all his genuine talent and skill, but never left behind the bitter hatred and blame he has towards "the world" or in his case Ozu

As a person who's completely in live with tatami Galaxy I enjoyed your whole video In fact I came to KZfaq to avoid watching it for third time. The way you put the dame scenes next to each other was amazing I can't thank you enough. I was totally agree on your thoughts. In fact in some point I was pike yessss man that's what I'm talking about. Tatami Galaxy is more than an anime for me. I love its plot its art style its animation its ost its characters and etc. it's the only anime that got me feeling it's part of my life, my character. Ling story short thank you and thank all the cast for this wonderful anime

Fantastic video, reeeeally well done! I'm very surprised that it doesn't have more views, but I guess people just don't talk about this show anymore, it is kind of old to be fair. I just finished the show yesterday and man.. it truly is something special. I've never been able to relate to a character so much. I basically am in his exact situation, I'm in my second year of university right now and I feel just like he did. I've been dealing with depression for a few years now and it does not seem to get any better, but him actually getting together with Akashi genuinely gave me hope that I can break out of this vivious cycle eventually. Every episode was great, but I specifially loved the last episode, I'm not one to cry a lot, but I teared up when he did make the move on Akashi in the last episode and seeing how happy she was about it, like she has been waiting for this moment for a very long time. Maybe I'll be in this situation as well someday, it would be nice to finally be happy in life, I can only dream how that must feel. But yeah, everything about this show is so unique, the story, the characters, the artstyle and so on. It resonated with me like no other anime ever has, just because I could perfectly associate myself with Watashi. Him not having an actual name makes it way easier to be honest and I really like that, another great aspect of this show. Also, shoutout to Trash Taste, they mentioned The Tatami Galaxy a few times on the podcast and it basically is the whole reason how I even heard of it and why I started watching it. I'm soo thankful for that

This is an incredible summary of the show. Very very well done. I've never had issues with depression or loneliness or anything of the sort, but I did see this show in freshman year of college. It was in the right place at the right time and was a perfect warning of what not to become. The way we transition from absurdist comedy, laughing at this poor loser, to astute introspection by the end was nothing short of MINDBLOWING for 19 year old me. This is unquestionably the best anime ever made.

possibly my favorite youtube video of all time I think you really nailed on the head exactly why this show is so impactful without answering anything explicitly for the viewer. i think that one of the most important parts of the show is realizing that ozu really only lived once so to say, yet he always made the most of his time and it happened to work out for him more or less. that doesn't mean that always having things go your way wont get you trapped in the tatami galaxy, nor will you be able to escape it just because you try your best, but that life is truly about perception. this video attempted and succeeded at covering so much and you didn't leave a single stone unturned I just loved it. it also kinda felt like the video was in the style of the anime itself with its fast narration and smart pauses, along with the subtitles being the exact same as the ones I had when I was watching the show being really helpful for the whole video's style. i know this comment is a lot of time after the video was made but just wow great job

Beautiful. I'm very passionate about this anime , it really helped me make my life better. Its crazy how much i relate to a fictional character and how much an anime has had an impact on my life. I always wanted to watch an in depth analysis of the anime to find if someone was as passionate about this anime as me , and this video is exactly what i've been looking for. I've watched this video over 3 times already and will probably rewatch it a couple more times again. Akashi , Higuchi , Jougasaki , Hanuki , Kaori , The neko ramen cart guy and especially Ozu , all characters in this anime are amazing , and i loved how you covered them all and basically every other aspect of the anime. I don't think any other person could come close to creating such an artistic piece, let alone review,, bravo. thank you!!! I feel like it's kinda hard for me to make videos purely with views in mind...but I try my best cuz I just wanna make the best content I can!! Thanks for watching!! Since you liked the video, if you also like SpongeBob, I just made a giant 2 hour long video about Squidward that I think is quite similar to this Tatami video!! So it would mean a lot if you checked that out as well!! Thanks again!!

that combination between h-zettrio and tatami galaxy, a lot of speed
@TheLocalMangaka

Haha someone recognized the opening song. I think hearing this song partially inspired me to make the video…because the song immediately made me think of something going very fast, which reminded me of tatami galaxy’s narration, and my initial idea over a year ago was to try and do just a speed summary of tatami galaxy to this song. And then it eventually involved into something different

I am a fan of Etsuko Yakushimaru and any series that has a song of hers always ends up to be a treat to watch. Tatami Galaxy is a special anime that manages to tell a complete and meaningful story in 11 episodes. Something that a huge majority of the anime that exists simply cannot hope to achieve. I will always treasure this series (this and the time machine blues sequel) in my heart. Perhaps I will read the novels as well in the future.

At the end of the show after the line said by watashi to akashi "I think that underwear will fit me perfectly" the show cuts to a pink haired homeless woman feeding two cats in the clock tower we see at the end of episodes 1-9 (presumably the real version of the fortuneteller). I've never been quite sure what the show was trying to say with that and wanted to hear your opinion if you have time. :3
@TheLocalMangaka
@TheLocalMangaka 11 ай бұрын
I think maybe it was to exemplify how Watashi could be an unreliable narrator, and a lot of his accounts were exaggerated or fictitious. A "real" version of the fortuneteller is the same as like how a "real" version of Ozu appears at the end (also with a different face). The fortuneteller also looks more comparatively normal without her huge nose (or like how Ozu no longer has youkai eyes)...and this could show how Watashi now sees the world more rationally than before.

Another great video! One thing I like about The Tatami Galaxy is that despite its eccentric style, at least to me, it seems like most of its main points are made very clear to the audience and easy to understand, but it also provides tons of different fun threads and details to follow. I definitely didn't notice many of the things mentioned here, and it was great seeing a lot of these things collected into one video.

I dont really like the animes artstyle and direction, although artistic it makes the sincere scenes from the novel feel much less important. It really ruins the serious elements too, as most of these serious scenes are spun comedically. Some of the things that happen in the anime are also so unrealistic like the airship or the fortune teller appearing everywhere, I think it should have stuck to the realistic setting. It makes it feel more relatable and the themes more impactful
@TheLocalMangaka
@TheLocalMangaka Жыл бұрын
Hm I do think it’d be interesting to see how the anime would fare if it took itself more seriously. I haven’t read the original novel, but is it like that? I do think the silliness of the anime gives it a unique charm that makes it stand out from your typical anime. But I get that it might not be for everyone.
