A documentary by Igor Dovidovich about the great Russian/Soviet pianist, Tatiana Petrovna Nikolayeva (May 4, 1924 - November 22, 1993).

A week ago I rediscovered her by chance while scanning KZfaq. I was looking for pianists (apart from Lang Lang) who played Tschaikowsky's first piano concerto and suddenly saw her name. I listened to her performance together with Gewandhaus Orchestra and Kurt Masur. I was so moved. I could hardly breathe. And a long forgotten memory of her came back to me: When I was a student of music at Cologne Conservatory between 1968 and 1972, she gave two concerts for our professors and us students. I remember that we were so thrilled and moved by her kind personality and her art of playing. And she was soooo generous and magnanimous. At the end of her second concert in Köln/Cologne she gave us 10 (!) encores as we simply would not stop applauding while standing. That was sooo touching. ❤❤❤

Those opening minutes, her rendition of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto 1, brought tears to my eyes. And yet, in all my life, I'd never heard of Tatiana Petrovna Nikolayeva! We're kept in such darkness in the West. 🥲

I would never have heard of her unless I had visited Moscow and Leningrad in 1980. I saw a record in a music store. The only word I could understand on the record cover was 'Bach'. It was this incredible pianist playing the Goldberg. I was in awe at her interpretation and listened to it many, many times.

Thanks for translating the document. We should all gather knowledge about pianists like Nikolayeva, because their unique playstyle may inspire us to discover new dimensions of music we would probably never discover ouselves without inspiration like this. I am just greatly sad that Nikolayeva's compositions (sheet music) are nowehere to be found, bought... if someone knows, I would be very pleased for any informations epsecially about her concert etudes.

If you are wishing to hear Tatiana's concerto performed by her under the baton of Kondrashin go to "Kondrashin and Nikolayeva" for the 1951 recording.
